Tailored iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications: Hydroxyethyl starch coating enhances endothelial biocompatibility.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) offer promise for drug delivery and imaging, but their vascular safety requires thorough evaluation. Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) is a clinically used, biocompatible polysaccharide with potential as a nanoparticle coating to improve vascular safety. We synthesized novel hydroxyethyl starch-coated IONPs (IONPs@HES) and assessed their properties and effects on human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) under basal and inflammatory conditions. IONPs@HES showed magnetite cores, near-neutral charge, and reduced magnetic saturation, supporting biocompatibility. They

Lipid Coating of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles Leads to Efficient Antigen Delivery to Lymph Nodes for Cancer Vaccination.

The enrichment of antigens in lymph nodes and the ensuing antigen presentation constitute crucial steps in determining the efficacy of tumor vaccines. However, antigen delivery is restricted by enzyme degradation, immune system clearance, and the difficulty of crossing biological barriers. In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) were prepared for antigen loading and were further coated with a phospholipid bilayer membrane (named silicasomes) to improve the delivery efficiency to lymph nodes. Our results showed that silicasomes exhibited superior lymph node enrichment compared to

Slippery when wet: The effect of a novel zwitterionic coating on silicone ureteral stents.

Silicone ureteral stents provide anti-encrustation properties and patient comfort but are more difficult to insert and remove due to increased surface friction. Applying zwitterionic coatings to silicone stents may reduce friction and facilitate stent placement and removal. This study compared the frictional forces of zwitterionic-coated silicone stents with commercial stents using benchtop models. The static and kinetic frictional forces of five ureteral stents were measured: bare silicone stent without coating (BS), single outer-coated zwitterionic silicone stent (Z1), double-coated (inner a

Rapidly Expandable Zeolite-Poly(vinyl Alcohol) Sponge for Fast Bleeding Control in Severe Femoral Artery Hemorrhage.

Rapid and effective bleeding control is essential for saving lives from severe hemorrhage. Currently, expandable hemostatic materials are in urgent demand for narrow and deep wounds because they can be quickly packed into a wound cavity and expand internally to generate pressure that promotes hemostasis. In this work, a zeolite-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite sponge was first prepared by decorating zeolite powders onto a commercial medical PVA sponge, and it was further fabricated into small tablets in a compressed state. The small tablets can be easily loaded inside a syringe-like applica

Cellulose Formate-Based Surgical Sutures With Tunable Absorbability and Enhanced Biocompatibility.

Cellulose, as an abundant, renewable, and biocompatible material, is an ideal candidate for suture preparation. Yet, traditional cellulose sutures are non-absorbable because humans lack cellulase. Herein, cellulose-based threads were fabricated using cellulose formate (CF) and collagen (optimal weight ratio 1:1) with surface modification by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). By incorporating collagen, the strength and toughness of the CF threads were enhanced to match commercial collagen sutures. Moreover, during physiological degradation, a small amount of released formic acid led to the conversion o

Bioinspired arrangement of nanohydroxyapatite in chitin matrix for high-strength bone plates.

Biological materials composed of inorganic nanofillers and biopolymeric matrix (e.g., bone and crab shells) generally display excellent mechanical performance. However, conventional chitin/nanohydroxyapatite composites exhibit limited mechanical properties, primarily due to the random distribution and aggregation of nanohydroxyapatites within the chitin matrix. Herein, we develop uniaxially and biaxially oriented chitin/nanohydroxyapatite hydrogels through a facile stretching strategy. The influences of pre-stretching/transversely strains and nanohydroxyapatite morphology (spherical, rod-shape

Impact of Transportation on the Suitability of Cryopreserved Corneal Lenticule for Implantation.

Corneal lenticules can be deposited and retrieved for vision-restoring surgeries. Extended transportation logistical delays from the lenticule bank to the clinic could be a concern. To investigate this, corneal lenticules were cryopreserved at a Ministry of Health of Singapore-licensed lenticule bank for 1 year and were then transported at 4 °C. The transparency was measured daily until significant degradation was notable, compared to fresh lenticules from donor corneas (n = 3). The molecular and ultrastructural integrity of lenticules after 1 day in transport (n = 3) and on the day of transpa

Cytotoxic and Mechanical Properties of Resins 3D Printed with Low-Cost Hardware for C2C12 Biohybrid Actuators.

For biohybrid actuators, the properties of synthetic materials interfacing with living cells are crucial due to cellular chemical and mechanical sensitivities. 3D-printable resins exhibit a wide range of properties, but mechanical properties are frequently reported before sterilization. Additionally, biocompatibility must be assessed for specific use cases, including in the context of the cell type and printing procedures. Therefore, this data descriptor details a new dataset of cytotoxicity and material properties of six commercially-available resins (three rigid and three elastomeric) printe

Development of CS/PLA Composites with Enhanced Ductility via PBS Elastomer Reinforcement.

Polylactic acid (PLA) exhibits remarkable biocompatibility and biodegradability, rendering it a highly promising material for applications in packaging and disposable products. However, its inherent brittleness, low melt strength, and slow crystallization rate significantly restrict its practical uses. Our previous studies have shown that incorporating the ADR chain extender can yield chitosan-polylactic acid-ADR (CS/PLA-ADR) composites with outstanding antibacterial properties, enhanced biodegradability, and the capability to effectively block water vapor and oxygen. However, the low elongati

Effects of phenolic hydroxyl group structures of Alaska pollock gelatin-based adhesives on soft tissue adhesion and biocompatibility.

Marine mussels adhere to various types of substrates in aqueous/wet environments, and their adhesion is controlled by the catechol structure of the phenolic hydroxyl groups. Tissue adhesives with a catechol structure have been designed based on this biomimetic adhesion mechanism. However, the effects of the chemical structure of the phenolic hydroxyl groups on tissue adhesion and biocompatibility have not yet been systematically investigated. In this study, various phenolic hydroxyl group-modified Alaska pollock gelatins (nHy-ApGltns (n = 0, 1, 2, 3)) were synthesized and their function as tis

A call for standardization: Evaluating different methodologies to induce in vitro foreign body giant cell formation for biomaterials research and design.

Foreign body giant cells (FBGCs) are crucial in the foreign body reaction at the biomaterial-tissue interface, forming through the fusion of cells from the monocyte/macrophage lineage and performing functions such as material degradation and fibrous encapsulation. Yet, their presence and role in biomaterials research is only slowly unveiled. This review analyzed existing FBGC literature identified through a search string and sources from FBGC articles to evaluate the most commonly used methods and highlight the challenges in establishing a standardized protocol. Our findings revealed a fragmen
