A patient in his 60s presented to the local emergency department with symptoms of acute decompensating heart failure. Following initial investigations under cardiology he was transferred to haematology, where a provisional diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis was established. We report on the eye-safe laser performance of Tm3+-doped calcium fluoride crystals, modified with optically inactive "buffer" cations (Y3+, Lu3+, Gd3+, and La3+), under in-band diode-pumping at 1.68 µm. A fiber-optic sensor used to detect volatile organic compounds is described. The sensor consists of a single-mode D-fiber with a 2.5 microm polydimethylsiloxane layer. The layer is applied to the fiber flat after removal of a section of the fiber's cladding to increase evanescent interaction of the light with the layer. The spin angular momentum (SAM) of an elliptically or circularly polarized light beam can be transferred to matter to drive a spinning motion. OBJECTIVE: We report a case of localized amyloidosis of the urinary bladder in an 80-year-old female whose main presenting symptom was massive hematuria.
