A case-control study of multiple sclerosis.

We conducted a study of 145 persons with multiple sclerosis who had been identified in a 1970 survey and 145 friend controls, to investigate whether the development of MS was associated with exposure to uncommon viruses or an older age at infection with 1 or more common viruses. The most striking finding was a strong positive association for history of infectious mononucleosis (IM), suggesting older age at exposure to Epstein-Barr virus, the most common etiologic agent of IM. We also found significant positive associations for number of different domiciles before adulthood and for visits outsi

Sex, side, and severity in spontaneous malformations of fetal A/JKt mice, and their associations with each other and with fetal weight.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) and open eyelid (OL) occur spontaneously in rather high frequencies in A/JKt mice, but vary greatly in their degree, laterality, and sex distribution. CLP occurs significantly more often in females, and OL even more often in males, than in the opposite sex. The female preponderence for CLP was largely if not entirely due to the increased rate of occurrence of left and incomplete forms of the defect, and to the excess in females heavier than the female median weight; whereas the male preponderance for OL could not be explained by any clear or major disparities of thes

Idiopathic and congenital scoliosis in twins.

This report contains a case presentation of monozygotic twins who had concordant right thoracic scoliosis of differing severities. One twin also had an associated congenital left lumbar scoliosis and urologic abnormalities. This report would suggest that the genetic basis of scoliosis may occur at multiple gene loci.

Racial variations in the incidence of congenital malformations.

Racial variation in the incidence of several common congenital malformations has been studied in Atlanta, Georgia. The white-to-black incidence ratios were substantially different from unity for single defects, while approximate equality of rates was noted for multiple defects. Amongst the specific malformations for which familial data were available, affected first- and second-degree relatives were found only in the families of probands with single defects. It is postulated that these findings may indicate a more prominent function of the environment in the genesis of multiple malformations t

A population-based study of maternal and infant factors influencing influenza vaccination among young children born in Colorado from 2008 to 2016.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza causes significant morbidity among young children, and vaccination remains the best strategy to prevent disease. Understanding factors influencing early influenza vaccination uptake are important to identify strategies to increase vaccination rates. OBJECTIVE: To assess maternal and neonatal factors associated with influenza vaccination among first-born children within the first two years of life. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study linking Colorado Birth Registry data and state immunization data of all live births between 2008 and 2016

Perinatal and early life risk factors for childhood brain tumors: Is instrument-assisted delivery associated with higher risk?

BACKGROUND: The childhood peak of brain tumors suggests that early-life exposures might have a role in their etiology. Hence, we examined in … g in a farm (OR: 4.98, 2.40-10.32) increased the odds of childhood brain tumors. Conversely, higher birth order was associated with lower risk (OR for 2nd vs. 1st child: 0.60, 95%CI: 0.40-0.89 and OR for 3rd vs. 1st: 0.34, 95%CI: 0.18-0.63). Prenatal care in the United States, 1980-94.

OBJECTIVES: This report examines trends in timing of prenatal care in the United States from 1980 to 1994. Demographic characteristics examined include age, race, Hispanic origin, marital status, place of birth of mother, educational attainment of mother, and live-birth order. Social characteristics discussed include barriers to care and pregnancy wantedness. METHODS: The source of data for trends and demographic analysis is the certificate of live birth filed for each child born in the United States. Data for social characteristics are from the 1988 National Maternal and Infant Health Survey…

Trends and risk factors associated with stillbirths: A case study of the Navrongo War Memorial Hospital in Northern Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and Child health remains at the core of global health priorities transcending the Millennium Development Goals into the current era of Sustainable Development Goals. Most low and middle-income countries including Ghana are yet to achieve the required levels of reduction in child and maternal mortality. This paper analysed the trends and the associated risk factors of stillbirths in a district hospital located in an impoverished and remote region of Ghana. METHODS: Retrospective hospital maternal records on all deliveries conducted in the Navrongo War Memorial hospital fro

Twin birth changes DNA methylation of subsequent siblings.

We asked if twin birth influences the DNA methylation of subsequent siblings. We measured whole blood methylation using the HumanMethylation450 array for siblings from two twin and family studies in Australia and Korea. We compared the means and correlations in methylation between pairs of siblings born before a twin birth (BT siblings), born on either side of a twin birth (B/AT pairs) and born after a twin birth (AT siblings). For the genome-wide average DNA methylation, the correlation for AT pairs (rAT) was larger than the correlation for BT pairs (rBT) in both studies, and from the meta-an

Family circumstances and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in West Germany.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship between family characteristics and survival from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), which we studied for the first time in German children. METHODS: ALL cases were diagnosed between 1992 and 1994 and information on family characteristics was collected during a previously conducted nationwide case-control study. Children were followed for 10 years after diagnosis, as few disease-related events occur afterwards. Cox proportional hazards models estimating hazard ratios (HR) were calculated using overall as well as event-free survival

A meta-analysis of common risk factors associated with the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip in newborns.

BACKGROUND: Although there is no clear consensus about the process of screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), there are six common risk factors associated with DDH in patients less than 6 months of age (breech presentation, sex, family history, first-born, side of hip, and mode of delivery). METHODS: A meta-analysis of published studies was conducted to identify the relative risk ratio of the six commonly known risk factors. A total of 31 primary studies consisting of 20,196 DDH patients met the following inclusion criteria: (1) contained empirical data on at least one common

Change in paternity and recurrence of hyperemesis gravidarum.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether change in paternity changes recurrence risk of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). STUDY DESIGN: Survey data on recurrence of HG was compared between cases who had a paternity change between pregnancies and cases who did not. RESULTS: The percentage of HG pregnancies in women with the same partner for all pregnancies was not significantly different from the percentage of HG pregnancies in women who changed partners for at least one pregnancy (78% vs 71%, p > 0.05). Participants who did and did not change partners between their first and second pregnancies, were asked

Compliance of children and youngsters in the use of mouthguards.

The purpose of the study was to examine the compliance of children wearing their mouthguards, and to evaluate socio-environmental factors that impact upon the usage of the device. Eighty children attending the student clinic of the Hadassah School of Dental Medicine received mouthguards free of charge. One year later, 69 participants and their parents answered a survey aimed at gaining information regarding compliance and comfort when wearing the mouthguard correlated with gender, ages of parents and child, number of siblings, position of child in the family, socio-economic status, education o

Epidemiological survey of 6 years' federal health service experience of pyloric stenosis: case report of presentation in a 26-month male.

Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (CHPS) is primarily a surgical process of the neonate and infant. Diagnosis and treatment of CHPS in a 26-month-old male prompted an inquiry of the military health service database for age of onset, sex, and birth position data. Data were analyzed on 604 cases found in a 71-month time period. The incidence for first-born males was .43 percent, for other than first-born males .34 percent, and for females .091 percent, the peak age being 3 weeks and 1 month old. Children diagnosed at age 6 months and older, as well as adults, were identified. Utilization
