Rabies surveillance and prevention in Guinea: Epidemiological data and postexposure prophylaxis challenges.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Canine rabies is an endemic form of zoonosis and represents a major public health threat in Guinea, similar to other African countries. However, few investigations on the epidemiology of rabies in animals and humans have been conducted, and evidence-based data required to inform health policies remain inadequate. This study was conducted to update our knowledge of human dog-mediated rabies epidemiology and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) accessibility-related factors in Guinea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted from January 2018 to December 2020, c

Human sand fly challenge elicits saliva-specific innate and type 1-polarized immunity that promotes Leishmania killing.

In Leishmania-endemic areas, humans are constantly exposed to sand fly bites. To explore the immune consequences of this chronic vector exposure, we performed a human challenge study with the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were collected from fifteen healthy volunteers who underwent multiple controlled exposures to sand fly bites. We identified two Lu. longipalpis salivary proteins, LJM19 and LJL143, which elicit type 1 cytokine responses in cells from exposed individuals and which correlate with enhanced killing of Leishmania parasites in co-cultured macrop

Bites by the noble false widow spider Steatoda nobilis can induce Latrodectus-like symptoms and vector-borne bacterial infections with implications for public health: a case series.

CONTEXT: In recent years, the Noble false widow spider Steatoda nobilis (Thorell, 1875) has expanded its range globally and may represent a potential threat to native ecosystems and public health. Increasing numbers in synanthropic habitats have led to more human encounters and envenomations. Steatoda nobilis bites were previously classed as medically significant with similarities to bites from true black widows of the genus Latrodectus but deemed milder in onset, with symptoms generally ranging from mild to moderate. CASE DETAILS: In this manuscript we present 16 new cases of S. nobilis enve

Delayed Medical Care Following an Alligator Bite: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Alligator bites in humans present a significant concern for public safety in the southern United States, especially in states like Florida with substantial alligator populations. Although these reptiles play a vital role in the local ecology, encounters with humans can lead to severe injuries and even fatalities. A case report is presented of a 58-year-old male who suffered an alligator bite while attempting to take a selfie with the reptile during a hunting trip in rural Florida. The patient's injuries included multiple lacerations on the dorsum of his right hand. Despite the incident, the pa

A case report of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei Bailey, Thomas & Silva-Jr, 2005.

We present a case of human intoxication due to a snakebite by the opisthoglyphous dipsadid Thamnodynastes lanei. A 26-year-old man was bitten on the right hand and was not medicated. Bleeding lasted a few seconds, while paresthesia, chills, and headache persisted for up to 10 hours. The pain disappeared after a week, and the edema, itching, and prickling persisted for another 3 days. Although this patient's symptoms were typical of bites by South American opisthoglyphous snakes, they persisted longer than those of bites by some congeneric species. Our report adds a species to the list of medic

A Bite to Remember: A Case Report of Necrotizing Soft-Tissue Infection of the Forearm Caused by Prevotella intermedia.

INTRODUCTION: Human bite wounds account for a small proportion of bite injuries but carry a high risk of infection due to polymicrobial inoculation. While most infections present as cellulitis or abscess, necrotizing soft-tissue infections (NSTIs) are rare and potentially fatal. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 72-year-old female who developed an NSTI of the forearm after an occlusal human bite. Despite empiric antibiotics, the infection progressed rapidly, and intraoperative cultures grew Prevotella intermedia, an uncommon anaerobe in NSTIs. She required urgent fasciotomy and debridemen

Arthropod Envenomation in North America.

Arthropods (phylum Arthopoda) account for a higher percentage of morbidity and mortality to humans than do mammalian bites, snake bites, or marine envenomation. They are ubiquitous in domestic dwellings, caves, and campsites and in wilderness settings such as deserts, forests, and lakes. Although arthropods are most intrusive during warmer months, many are active throughout the winter, particularly indoors. Arthropods are also nocturnal and often bite unsuspecting victims while they are sleeping. Encounters with humans are generally defensive, accidental, or reactive. An individual stung by an

"Fight-bite": not just a hand problem.

Human bite wounds around the knee are rarely seen, yet may require the same urgent attention as a fight bite to the hand. Two cases of polymicrobial septic arthritis of the knee secondary to a human bite wound are described. In both the cases, the diagnosis of the septic arthritis was delayed because the intra-articular wound was unrecognized. The injuries were initially deemed superficial and managed with local wound care. In each case, the knee was flexed at the time of injury and the quadriceps tendon was penetrated by a tooth which inoculated the knee joint. Septic arthritis of the knee pr

Vector dynamics and Onchocerca infectivity status of Simulium damnosum complex at Arinta and Erin-Ijesha waterfalls, Southwest Nigeria.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Arinta and Erin-Ijesha are popular waterfalls in Southwest Nigeria where preliminary assessments identified blackfly activity, yet data on vector dynamics and Onchocerca infectivity remain unavailable. This study investigated these parameters to assess the risk of onchocerciasis transmission at both sites. METHODS: Adult blackflies were collected for three consecutive days in a month by two dark complexioned adult male human landing catchers from September 2023 to August 2024. For each hour of sampling, 20% of the catches were randomly selected and dissected in real-tim

Persistently high estimates of late night, indoor exposure to malaria vectors despite high coverage of insecticide treated nets.

BACKGROUND: It has been speculated that widespread and sustained use of insecticide treated bed nets (ITNs) for over 10 years in Asembo, western Kenya, may have selected for changes in the location (indoor versus outdoor) and time (from late night to earlier in the evening) of biting of the predominant species of human malaria vectors (Anopheles funestus, Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto, and Anopheles arabiensis). METHODS: Mosquitoes were collected by human landing catches over a six week period in June and July, 2011, indoors and outdoors from 17 h to 07 h, in 75 villages in Asembo, western

Rabies situation in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Rabies, a fatal but preventable zoonosis, is a major public health problem in developing countries. In Cambodia the disease burden is largely underestimated because patients with encephalitis following dog bites are rarely hospitalized and die at home. Since 1998 Institut Pasteur in Cambodia (IPC), Phnom Penh has been the only source of free post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and post-mortem diagnosis. METHODS: The 1998-2007 data compiled by IPC was analyzed to describe all treated patients for PEP, results of human testing and confirmed rabies cases, and results of animal testing. F

Spiders and spider bites.

The only spiders of real medical importance to humans in the United States are the Loxosceles and Latrodectus species, primarily the brown recluse and the black window, respectively. These spiders bite humans only when trapped or crushed against the skin. Severe brown recluse spider bites produce dermonecrosis within 72-96 hours, which should be treated with rest, ice compresses, antibiotics, dapsone, and surgery delayed for several weeks. Using systemic corticosteroids may be helpful in treating the much rarer systemic loxoscelism, which has minimal skin changes but produces massive hemolysis

To bite or not to bite! A questionnaire-based survey assessing why some people are bitten more than others by midges.

BACKGROUND: The Scottish biting midge, Culicoides impunctatus, responsible for more than 90% of biting attacks on human beings in Scotland, is known to demonstrate a preference for certain human hosts over others. METHODS: In this study we used a questionnaire-based survey to assess the association between people's perception of how badly they get bitten by midges and their demographic, lifestyle and health related characteristics. RESULTS: Most people (85.8%) reported being bitten sometimes, often or always with only 14.2% reporting never being bitten by midges when in Scotland. There was n

Medical aspects of spider bites.

Spiders have been incriminated as causes of human suffering for centuries, but few species worldwide cause medically significant envenomation. Widow spiders (Latrodectus spp.) occur worldwide and cause latrodectism, which is characterized by pain (local and generalized) associated with nonspecific systemic effects, diaphoresis, and less commonly other autonomic and neurological effects. Recluse spiders (Loxosceles spp.) are distributed mostly through the tropical and subtropical Western Hemisphere and can cause severe skin lesions and rarely systemic effects; most bites are unremarkable. Cases of cat-associated human plague in the Western US, 1977-1998.

Exposure to cats infected with Yersinia pestis is a recently recognized risk for human plague in the US. Twenty-three cases of cat-associated human plague (5 of which were fatal) occurred in 8 western states from 1977 through 1998, which represent 7.7% of the total 297 cases reported in that period. Bites, scratches, or other contact with infectious materials while handling infected cats resulted in 17 cases of bubonic plague, 1 case of primary septicemic plague, and 5 cases of primary pneumonic plague. The 5 fatal cases were associated with misdiagnosis or delays in seeking treatment, which r

Scrotal dog bite: unusual case and review of pediatric literature.

Animal bites to human external genitalia are rare. Only a few cases of scrotal dog bite in children have been reported. We present an additional specific case of a scrotal dog bite in a child because the lesion and its repair have not been previously reported in published pediatric studies. A traumatic resection of the right testicular vas deferens was repaired by microsurgical vasoepididymal anastomosis. A review of the published data was also performed to analyze the management of scrotal dog bite lesions.

An epidemiological study of the occurrence of habu snake bite on the Amami Islands, Japan.

This study was carried out in order to estimate the risk of habu snake bite on the Amami Islands in relation to meteorological and human behavioural factors. A time-series analysis of the seasonal variation of habu snake bite was also carried out in order to clarify the possible mechanism of the epidemiological features of habu bite. It was found that the risk of habu bite has been decreasing over a long period of time on both the islands of Amamioshima and Tokunoshima. In general, the risk is higher on Tokunoshima for males and on Amamioshima it is higher for females. There was a significant

Public health impact of nuisance biting blackfly (Simulium damnosum s.l.) along the Asejire dam in Southwest, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Black flies remain a global public health concern, particularly through their biting behaviour which is a crucial risk factor in disease transmission. The present study seeks to investigate the public health implications of the biting behaviour of Simulium damnosum s.l along the Asejire dam, bordering Oyo and Osun State, Nigeria. METHODS: Simulium damnosum s.l were collected using the standard human landing collection (HLC) between 0700 and 1800 across four study areas within first-line communities around the Asejire dam between December, 2024 and November, 2025. Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus biting patterns in Dielmo, an area of low level exposure to malaria vectors.

BACKGROUND: In Dielmo, Senegal, the widespread use of long-lasting insecticidal nets has decreased both the incidence of malaria and the density of the Anopheles population. However, persistent low-level malaria transmission may hamper efforts to eliminate the disease. Therefore, continuous monitoring of the vector population is needed in order to improve knowledge of Anopheles biting behaviour and to readjust control interventions. METHODS: In 2015, Anopheles were collected every month for a whole year and each specimen was identified using morphological and molecular techniques. The biting
