Alterations in Endogenous Stem Cell Populations in the Acute Phase of Blast-Induced Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Blast-induced spinal cord injury (bSCI) is prevalent among military populations and frequently leads to irreversible spinal cord tissue damage that manifests as sensorimotor and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Clinical recovery from bSCI has been proven to be multifactorial, as it is heavily dependent on the function of numerous cell populations in the tissue environment, as well as extensive ongoing inflammatory processes. This varied recovery process is thought to be due to irreversible spinal cord damage after 72 hours post-injury. Stem cell therapy for spinal cord injurie

Shock wave damage from the ventral side in primary blast injury: An experimental study in pigs.

AIM/PURPOSE: This study aimed to apply a shock wave from the ventral side of a pig and examine its effect to use the results for new body armor production for humans. METHODS: Seven male hybrid pigs were used. Each pig was placed under general anesthesia on the experimental table in a blast tube in the left lateral position to expose the front chest area, and shock waves generated by compressed air at 3.0 MPa were applied. We examined changes in vital signs and arterial blood gas in the hyper-acute phase and computed tomography (CT) images, and autopsies were performed for organ damage after

Penetrating liver injury caused by a metal fragment from a blast accident in a factory: a case report.

Penetrating abdominal injuries are rare in countries that do not allow legal possession of firearms by the public. We report a case of a 27-year-old male patient with a penetrating liver injury caused by metal fragments released in a blast accident. On the day of the accident, there was a metal explosion, and multiple fragments of the metal lodged in the patient's abdomen. The metal fragments were widely distributed over the abdomen and limited to the subcutaneous layer. A computed tomography scan showed that one metal fragment had penetrated near the right upper quadrant. First, we tried expl

Effects of orientation and distance of goats on blast lung injury characteristics on a plateau above 4500-meter.

PURPOSE: High explosives are used to produce blast waves to study their biological effects. The lungs are considered as the critical target organ in blast-effect studies. The degree of lung hemorrhaging is related to both the explosive power and the increased lung weight. We studied the characteristics of the biological effects from an air explosion of a thermobaric bomb in a high-altitude environment and the lethality and lung injury severity of goats in different orientations and distances. METHODS: Goats were placed at 2.5, 3, 4, and 5 m from the explosion center and exposed them to an air

Development of a rodent high-energy blast injury model for investigating conditions associated with traumatic amputations.

AIMS: In recent conflicts, most injuries to the limbs are due to blasts resulting in a large number of lower limb amputations. These lead to heterotopic ossification (HO), phantom limb pain (PLP), and functional deficit. The mechanism of blast loading produces a combined fracture and amputation. Therefore, to study these conditions, in vivo models that replicate this combined effect are required. The aim of this study is to develop a preclinical model of blast-induced lower limb amputation. METHODS: Cadaveric Sprague-Dawley rats' left hindlimbs were exposed to blast waves of 7 to 13 bar burst

Effects of Mild Blast Traumatic Brain Injury on Cerebral Vascular, Histopathological, and Behavioral Outcomes in Rats.

To determine the effects of mild blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI), several groups of rats were subjected to blast injury or sham injury in a compressed air-driven shock tube. The effects of bTBI on relative cerebral perfusion (laser Doppler flowmetry [LDF]), and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) cerebral vascular resistance were measured for 2 h post-bTBI. Dilator responses to reduced intravascular pressure were measured in isolated middle cerebral arterial (MCA) segments, ex vivo, 30 and 60 min post-bTBI. Neuronal injury was assessed (Fluoro-Jade C [FJC]) 24 and 48 h post-bTBI. Ne

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Modulation as a Target for Ameliorating Effects of Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury.

Blast traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has been shown to contribute to progressive neurodegenerative disease. Recent evidence suggests that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a mechanistic link between acute neurotrauma and progressive tauopathy. We propose that ER stress contributes to extensive behavioral changes associated with a chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)-like phenotype. Targeting ER stress is a promising option for the treatment of neurotrauma-related neurodegeneration, which warrants investigation. Utilizing our validated and clinically relevant Sprague-Dawley blast model, we

Voluntary Alcohol Intake following Blast Exposure in a Rat Model of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Alcoholism is a frequent comorbidity following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), even in patients without a previous history of alcohol dependence. Despite this correlational relationship, the extent to which the neurological effects of mTBI contribute to the development of alcoholism is unknown. In this study, we used a rodent blast exposure model to investigate the relationship between mTBI and voluntary alcohol drinking in alcohol naïve rats. We have previously demonstrated in Sprague Dawley rats that blast exposure leads to microstructural abnormalities in the medial prefrontal cortex (m

Changes in intrinsic functional brain networks following blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Blast-induced mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) commonly go undetected by computed tomography and conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study was used to investigate functional brain network abnormalities in a group of blast-induced mTBI subjects using independent component analysis (ICA) of resting state functional MRI (fMRI) data. METHODS: Twenty-eight resting state networks of 13 veterans who sustained blast-induced mTBI were compared with healthy controls across three fMRI domains: blood oxygenation level-dependent spatial maps, time course spectra and function

A novel model of burn-blast combined injury and its phasic changes of blood coagulation in rats.

Burn-blast combined injury has a complex pathological process that may cause adverse complications and difficulties in treatment. This study aims to establish a standard animal model of severe burn-blast combined injury in rats and also to investigate early phasic changes of blood coagulation. By using 54 Wistar rats, distance from explosion source (Hexogen) and size of burned body surface area were determined to induce severe burn-blast combined injury. Thereafter, 256 rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 64): blast injury group, burn injury group, burn-blast combined injury group

No neurochemical evidence of brain injury after blast overpressure by repeated explosions or firing heavy weapons.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric and neurological symptoms are common among soldiers exposed to blast without suffering a direct head injury. It is not known whether such symptoms are direct consequences of blast overpressure. OBJECTIVE: To examine if repeated detonating explosions or firing if of heavy weapons is associated with neurochemical evidence of brain damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three controlled experimental studies. In the first, army officers were exposed to repeated firing of a FH77B howitzer or a bazooka. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was taken post-exposure to measure biomarkers for bra

Analysis of fractures treated in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, in 1972, with special reference to gunshot wounds and bomb blast injuries.

The total number of patients admitted to the Fracture unit in the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1972 is recorded and classified according to cause. Fractures resulting from gunshot wounds and bomb injuries are examined more closely together with associated injuries and complications. These groups are compared briefly with the open fractures resulting from road traffic accidents. Treatment of fractures in gunshot wounds and bomb injuries is discussed. Reference is made to the mechanisms of injury by gunshot and explosions.

Sex-dependent blood-brain barrier alterations following repeated mild blast traumatic brain injury at varying inter-injury intervals.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a worldwide epidemic and a major cause of disability, morbidity, and mortality. TBI is a major risk factor for the development of late-life dementia, especially Alzheimer's Disease, and other neurological conditions, such as epilepsy. The most prevalent form of TBI is mild TBI (mTBI), which is characterized by cognitive and psychological deficits as well as metabolic and vascular mechanisms of neuropathobiology. mTBI can be induced by either impact or blast insults and multiple mTBIs can result in worsened outcomes. There is a need to understand path

Cutaneous burn injury represents a major risk factor for the development of traumatic ectopic bone formation following blast-related extremity injury.

Blast-related traumatic heterotopic ossification (tHO) impacts clinical outcomes in combat-injured patients, leading to delayed wound healing, inflammatory complications, and reduced quality of life. Blast injured patients often have significant burns. This study investigated whether a partial thickness thermal burn injury exacerbates blast-related tHO in a clinically relevant polytrauma animal model. Adult male Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to an established model involving a whole-body blast overpressure exposure (BOP), complex extremity trauma followed by hind limb amputation (CET) fol
