Body image, illness perception, and psychological distress in women coping with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Objective: While symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and psychological distress (PD) are directly linked, indirect effects are also apparent. The present study aims to develop an explanatory model for the effect of PCOS on women' PD and identify possible protective and risk factors. It examines the development of PD in women with PCOS and further investigates the association between body image, both positive (body appreciation) and negative (body dissatisfaction) dimensions, and PD as well as the potential mediating effect of illness perception on this association. Methods: This study…

Testing the associations between internalized cisgenderism, self-objectification, body shame, and mental health correlates in the framework of the pantheoretical model of dehumanization: A study in Chinese transgender adults.

As an integrated framework informed by the Minority Stress Model and Objectification Theory, the Pantheoretical Model of Dehumanization was proposed to better understand mental health outcomes in transgender individuals. With a sample of 200 Chinese transgender adults, the present study tested the associations and potential mechanisms between internalized cisgenderism, self-objectification, body shame, and mental health correlates in the framework of the Pantheoretical Model of Dehumanization. Correlation and regression analyses were used. Results showed that internalized cisgenderism was posi

Managing the difficult penile prosthesis patient.

INTRODUCTION: Inflatable penile prostheses (IPPs) are associated with excellent long-term outcomes and patient/partner satisfaction. A small percentage of patients remain dissatisfied, despite acceptable surgical results. AIMS: This study aims to evaluate factors associated with patient satisfaction and dissatisfaction, define patient characteristics, which may identify elevated risk of postoperative dissatisfaction, and describe management strategies to optimize functional and psychological patient outcomes. METHODS: A review of urologic and non-urologic cosmetic surgery literature was perf

Alterations in Body Uneasiness, Eating Attitudes, and Psychopathology Before and After Cross-Sex Hormonal Treatment in Patients with Female-to-Male Gender Dysphoria.

Body dissatisfaction plays an important role in the development of psychiatric problems such as eating disorders as well as gender dysphoria (GD). Cross-sex hormonal treatment (CHT) alleviates the dissatisfaction by making various changes in the body. We examined the alteration of body uneasiness, eating attitudes and behaviors, and psychological symptoms longitudinally in Turkish participants with female-to-male gender dysphoria (FtM GD) after CHT. Thirty-seven participants with FtM GD and 40 female controls were asked to complete the Body Uneasiness Test to explore different areas of body-re…

Interactive and Mediational Etiologic Models of Eating Disorder Onset: Evidence from Prospective Studies.

It is vital to elucidate how risk factors work together to predict eating disorder onset because it should improve the yield of prevention efforts. Risk factors that have predicted eating disorder onset in multiple studies include low body mass index (BMI) for anorexia nervosa; thin-ideal internalization, perceived pressure to be thin, body dissatisfaction, dieting, and negative affect for bulimia nervosa; and body dissatisfaction and dieting for purging disorder. No such risk factors have been identified for binge eating disorder. Classification tree analyses have identified several amplifyin…

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people face elevated risks for eating and body image disturbances relative to their cisgender counterpa … directly related to eating disturbances and indirectly related through internalized body ideals and body dissatisfaction. Findings underscore heterogeneity across TGD subgroups in China and partially support tripartite processes, while indicating model refinements are needed for TGD adults. Tailored prevention and intervention efforts should consider distinct risk pat …

Development of the two-factor modified Kids Eating Disorder Survey (M-KEDS): a validation study with hispanic adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating behaviors and body dissatisfaction are highly prevalent among adolescents and linked to negative health outcomes. While Hispanic adolescents appear to be at high risk of disordered eating and body dissatisfaction, validated tools for assessment of these health concerns among this population are lacking. METHODS: This study used Confirmatory Factor Analysis to establish factorial validity for the Kids Eating Disorder Survey (KEDS) among a community sample of Hispanic adolescents. Internal consistency was measured by the Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20). RESULT…

Distinguishing delusional beliefs from overvalued ideas in Anorexia Nervosa: An exploratory pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Characterised by the belief that more weight needs to be lost-despite emaciation, failing organs, medical instability and prospect of death-Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a condition in which irrational, and highly-skewed, beliefs can be of delusional intensity. However, the nexus between delusion and rational awareness and how this is related to body image acceptance and perception has yet to be examined in AN. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between body dissatisfaction and beliefs of delusional intensity in an adult AN inpatient sample. METHODS: Twenty-one adul…

Perception of the non-dominant hand as larger after non-judgmental focus on its details.

We investigated whether brief non-judgmental focus on the details of one's non-dominant hand might lead to changes in perception of its size, and if such a change would be related to central coherence, body dissatisfaction, or how much participants liked their hand. After two pilot experiments (N = 28 and N = 30 respectively: Appendix 1), a within-subject experiment (N = 82) was conducted. Subjects were mainly university students. They were asked to rate the size of their non-dominant hand and how much they liked it, and the size of an external object (a X-box controller) on a visual-analog sc…

A yoga-based therapy program designed to improve body image among an outpatient eating disordered population: program description and results from a mixed-methods pilot study.

Poor body image is a critical barrier to eating disorder recovery. This pilot project was designed as a feasibility study to examine a novel group-based, therapeutic yoga and body image program (YBI) for addressing negative body image in those clinically diagnosed with an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia nervosa, and other specified feeding or eating disorder) receiving outpatient level treatment at an eating disorder treatment center located in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Self-administered questionnaires were completed by 67 participants at the beginning and end of the 8-week series, t

Associations Between Negative Body Image and Sexual Health Practices in Emerging Adults from Malaysia.

Past findings on the association between negative body image and sexual health behaviors have been mixed and mostly derived from Western samples. The aim of the current study was to examine associations between indices of negative body image and sexual health practices that reduce the risk of disease transmission in emerging adults, and whether these associations are moderated by gender. Using an online survey, a convenience sample of 584 Malaysian adults aged 18-30 years (230 men, 354 women) completed measures of satisfaction with overall appearance, body size dissatisfaction, weight satisfac

Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Patients Seeking Abdominoplasty, Rhinoplasty, and Rhytidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder may negatively affect self-perception of body shape and lead patients to seek cosmetic surgery. This study estimates the level of body dissatisfaction and prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder symptoms in candidates for three plastic surgical procedures. METHODS: Three hundred patients of both sexes divided into three groups (abdominoplasty, n = 90; rhinoplasty, n =151; and rhytidectomy, n =59) were classified as having (n =51, n =79, and n =25, respectively) or not having (n =39, n =72, and n =34, respectively) body dysmorphic disorder symptoms, based on…

Risk factors that predict future onset of each DSM-5 eating disorder: Predictive specificity in high-risk adolescent females.

Because no single report has examined risk factors that predict future onset each type of eating disorder and core symptom dimensions that crosscut disorders, we addressed these aims to advance knowledge regarding risk factor specificity. Data from 3 prevention trials that targeted young women with body dissatisfaction (N = 1,272; Mage = 18.5, SD = 4.2) and collected annual diagnostic interview data over 3-year follow-up were combined to identify predictors of subthreshold/threshold anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and purging disorder (PD). Writing Hand Preference and Eating Disorder Symptoms in Adolescence: Findings From a UK Birth Cohort Study.

Background: Hand-preference has implications for understanding brain organisation. Research has examined neurological and psychological conditions by hand-preference, but the association between hand-preference and eating disorders (ED) has only been explored in small adult samples. Purpose: This study (n = 10,950) explored the association between writing-hand preference and ED symptoms in adolescence, using a nationally representative cohort of children born in the UK in 2000-2002. Methods: At age 14 years, the cohort children self-reported hand-preference for writing and ED symptoms (exercis
