Association between excess body weight and urine protein concentration in healthy dogs.

BACKGROUND: Markedly overweight people can develop progressive proteinuria and kidney failure secondary to obesity-related glomerulopathy (O … assified as being overweight/obese, and dogs with a BCS of 4 or 5 were classified as being of ideal body weight. The urine protein:creatinine ratio (UPC) and urine albumin:creatinine ratio (UAC) were then determined, and compared between 20 overweight/obese dogs and 22 ideal body weight control dogs. RESULTS: Median UPC (0.04 [range, 0.01-0.14; interquartile …

Associations between body weight and personality disorders in a nationally representative sample.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether, in the general population, individuals in numerous abnormal body weight categories had higher odds of having personality disorders (PDs) than normal-weight individuals. Although personality functioning is hypothesized to be associated with body weight, there is a dearth of empirical evaluation of this topic. METHODS: The association of body weight (five categories: underweight [body mass index [BMI] <18.5]; normal [18.5 <or= BMI <25]; overweight [25 <or= BMI <30]; obese [30 <or= BMI <40]; and extremely obese [BMI >or=40]) with personality disorders was investi…

Adverse events of herbal food supplements for body weight reduction: systematic review.

Herbal weight-loss supplements are marketed with claims of effectiveness. Our earlier systematic review identified data from double-blind, randomized controlled trials for a number of herbal supplements. The aim of this systematic review was to assess all clinical evidence of adverse events of herbal food supplements for body weight reduction for which effectiveness data from rigorous clinical trials exist. We assessed Ephedra sinica, Garcinia cambogia, Paullinia cupana, guar gum, Plantago psyllium, Ilex paraguariensis and Pausinystalia yohimbe. Literature searches were conducted on Medline, E…

Postoperative pancreatic exocrine function influences body weight maintenance after pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Most patients who undergo pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (PPPD) are able to gain their weight postoperatively. However, sometimes patients experience a lack of weight gain even at long term after PPPD. The aim of this study was to examine factors influencing a body weight change after PPPD. METHODS: In 34 Japanese patients with PPPD, 28 clinical parameters were assessed as possible factors affecting body weight maintenance at long term (1 year) after the operation by univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Univariate analysis showed that long operation time (P = …

Melanocortin-4 receptor: a novel signalling pathway involved in body weight regulation.

For many years, genetically obese mouse strains have provided models for human obesity. The Avy/-agouti mouse, one of the oldest obese mouse models, is characterized by maturity-onset obesity and diabetes as a result of ectopic expression of the secreted protein hormone, agouti protein. Agouti protein is normally expressed in hair follicles to regulate pigmentation through antagonism of the melanocortin-1 receptor, but in-vitro studies have demonstrated that the hormone also has potent antagonist activity for the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4-R). Subsequent development of the MC4-R knockout mou

Body weight-bearing while rising and sitting down in patients with stroke.

Distribution of body weight on the two legs while rising and sitting down was examined in 42 subacute stroke patients and 16 healthy adults during both spontaneous movement and following instruction directed at even weight distribution. Vertical floor reaction forces were measured by two force plates. There was a difference between patients and controls in the tested motor tasks--the patients favoured their nonparetic leg. However, body weight distribution was less asymmetric when patients tried to rise and sit down evenly compared to spontaneous rising/sitting down (p less than 0.001). Patien…

[Nutritional condition of epidermolysis bullosa patients assessed from body height and weight].

Exact body height and weight data of patient with epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) and recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) were collected through a nation-wide epidemiologic investigation concerning epidermolysis bullosa (EB) patients. This data was then compared with the averaged body height and weight of age and sex matched normal controls. The nutritional condition of the EB patients was evaluated statistically. The data showed that height of female EBS patients was less than the controls (p less than 0.01), and furthermore, that height and weight of male and female RDEB pa

[Anorexia-nervosa--psychopathologic findings in relation to body weight and neuroendocrinologic changes].

The present study was conducted to investigate the relationship of psychopathological, behavioral and neuroendocrinological variables to weight profiles in patients with anorexia nervosa. The subjects were 67 patients with anorexia nervosa (61 females, 6 males). Eighteen (27%) were found to have a diffuse organic brain syndrome. Symptoms of hysterical and depressive neurosis predominated among the female subjects and those of obsessive-compulsive neurosis among the male subjects. Obsessive-compulsive and depressive traits were seen more frequently in the subjects with organic brain syndrome (1

Alpha-fetoprotein concentrations in maternal serum: relation to race and body weight.

We confirmed the relation between maternal weight and serum alpha-fetoprotein concentration and have shown a further relation--to ethnic origin. Of these two, maternal weight is the more closely related. Oriental, white, and Hispanic women showed no significant differences in serum AFP concentrations when corrections for maternal weight were applied. Black women showed consistently higher values, by an average of 10% at each week of gestation. These corrections only affected values falling just above or below the 95th centile cutoff. We conclude that corrections for maternal weight and race sh

Body weight in autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the relationship of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to overweight/obesity and underweight is mixed. Moreover, it is unclear how this relationship changes with age. METHODS: We carried out a systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis on the association between ASD and obesity, overweight and underweight across the life span. The study was based on a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42024524084). Web of Science and PubMed were searched until the 8th of April 2025. We assessed the quality of the included studies with the Newcastle-Ottawa scales (NOS). RESULTS: A total

Weight Stigma, Body Trust, and Suicide Ideation Among Adolescents: A Longitudinal Study.

Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death, with rates rising during adolescence. In the United States, suicide deaths rose among 15-24-year-olds and more than doubled among 10-14-year-olds from 2008 to 2018, with one in six reporting suicidal ideation (SI) annually. Weight stigma (WS), both experienced and internalized, is a significant suicide risk factor. WS fosters shame, self-doubt, and reduced body trust, or feeling unsafe in one's body-all of which are linked to SI. This study tested whether body trust mediated the relation between WS and SI among Iranian adolescents. Participants (N

Intracerebroventricular and intranasal application of alarin reduces body weight in male rats.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity represents a major public health burden, necessitating novel therapeutic targets. Alarin, one of the most recently discovered members of the galanin neuropeptide family, may be a potential candidate for anti-obesity therapy. Alarin has been shown to reduce food intake and increase energy expenditure when administered centrally, but its long-term effects on body weight remain unclear. Here, we examined the impact of a 7-day intracerebroventricular alarin infusion on energy homeostasis. Because intranasal delivery is a clinically feasible route for delivery of centrally acting…

Impact of Body Weight on Sedation-Related Outcomes in Complex Electrophysiological Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with a greater burden of cardiometabolic comorbidities that may potentially increase the risk of sedation-related complications. However, the impact of BMI on sedation safety during complex electrophysiological procedures (CEPs) remains uncertain. METHODS: In this study conducted at Ulm University Heart Center, patients undergoing CEPs were stratified into three BMI groups: normal weight, overweight, and obesity. Primary and secondary endpoints were analyzed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. The primary com

The contribution of hypothalamic neuropeptide Y to age-dependent body weight changes.

Middle-aged obesity and age-related anorexia leading to sarcopenia present a major public health burden. Similar age-associated patterns are observed across mammalian species, suggesting the involvement of conserved regulatory mechanisms. Age-dependent biphasic shifts in the balance between anabolic and catabolic signals of the adipose tissue-hypothalamus axis may contribute to both trends. Among hypothalamic mediators, neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a key anabolic (orexigenic and hypometabolic) peptide. This review summarizes current evidence on age-dependent changes in the effects of NPY on energy
