INTRODUCTION: The treatment of segmental tibial bone defects remains a surgical challenge. While Bone Transport (BT) and Induced Membrane Technique (IMT) are effective strategies for regenerating bone, there are few comparative studies between them. This investigation undertakes a comparative analysis of BT and IMT for large segmental tibial defects stabilised through plate fixation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with segmental tibial defects exceeding 5 cm were prospectively enrolled from 2008 to 2021 in a single institution, with a minimum follow-up duration of two years. All patients und

PurposeClinically, metastatic pathological fractures of the humeral shaft remain a challenging issue. Plate osteosynthesis and intramedullary nailing are common fixation methods; however, the optimal strategy remains debated, especially in patients with limited life expectancy where surgical goals include rapid pain relief, functional recovery, and fewer reoperations.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 27 patients with metastatic humeral shaft fractures treated surgically during 2009-2019. Patients were grouped by plate osteosynthesis (n = 17) and antegrade intramedullary nailing (n = 10), and

To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports in the literature of an open comminuted scaphoid fracture dislocation. We present such a rare case. The case report illustrates the case of a 58-year-old right-handed press operator who injured his left wrist when his hand got caught in a press machine. He received initial treatment at another hospital and was subsequently referred to our hospital. Eight days after the injury, surgery was performed under the brachial plexus block. Successful bone fusion was achieved through volar locking plate fixation, primary free bone grafting from the radi

BACKGROUND: Bone transport in distraction osteogenesis is an effective, well-known procedure. However, bone compression is an aspect of this technique for which there is no objective information. The lack of direct bone compression measurements may result in a lack of uniformity in the bone transport process, which can result in its ineffective application and may be contributing to its underutilization. This study describes the results of applying objectively measured compressions to achieve a distraction regeneration zone and docking site consolidation during bone transport in distraction os

Hutchison-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare genetic disease caused by a mutation in LMNA, the gene encoding A-type lamins, leading to premature aging with severely reduced life span. HGPS is characterized by growth deficiency, subcutaneous fat and muscle issues, wrinkled skin, alopecia, and atherosclerosis. Patients also develop a bone phenotype with reduced bone mineral density, osteolysis and striking demineralization of long bones. To further clarify the tissue modifications in HGPS, we characterized bone mineralization in the LmnaG609G/G609G progeria mouse model. Femurs from 8-wee

BACKGROUND: Rodent models are commonly employed to validate preclinical disease models through the evaluation of postoperative behavior and allodynia. Our study investigates the dynamic interplay between pain and functional recovery in the context of traumatic osteotomy and surgical repair. Specifically, we established a rat model of tibial osteotomy, followed by internal fixation using a 5-hole Y-plate with 4 screws, to explore the hypothesis that histological bone healing is closely associated with functional recovery.
OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to assess the correlation between b

BACKGROUND: Correction of the crooked nose, especially the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, has the potential to cause skull base injury. At present, the safe and effective method for perpendicular plate resection has not been clearly defined through biomechanics.
METHOD: CT scan data of 48 patients with crooked nose and deviated nasal septum were divided into C-type, angular deformity-type, and S-type based on the morphology of the 3D model. Different types of finite element models of the nasal bony septum and skull base were established. The osteotomy depth, angle, and force mode of

The interphase region at the base of the growth plate includes blood vessels, cells and mineralized tissues. In this region, cartilage is mineralized and replaced with bone. Blood vessel extremities permeate this space providing nutrients, oxygen and signaling factors. All these different components form a complex intertwined 3D structure. Here we use cryo-FIB SEM to elaborate this 3D structure without removing the water. As it is challenging to image mineralized and unmineralized tissues in a hydrated state, we provide technical details of the parameters used. We obtained two FIB SEM image st

BACKGROUND: Locking plate fixation in osteoporotic ankle fractures may fail due to cut-out or metalwork failure. Fibula pro-tibia fixation was a technique prior to the advent of locking plates that was used to enhance stability in ankle fractures by achieving tri or tetra-cortical fixation. With locking plates, the strength of this fixation construct can be further enhanced. There is lack of evidence currently on the merits of tibia-pro-fibula augmented locking plate fixation of unstable ankle fractures.
AIM: To assess if there is increased strength to failure, in an ankle fracture saw bone m

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Because of the complex anatomical structure of the maxillofacial skeleton, bending plates is necessary during surgery. The fast developing three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has provided a new method for making personalized craniomaxillofacial bone plates. However, the properties of these bone plates remain unknown. This study evaluates the mechanical, fatigue, and morphological properties of these bone plates, which may provide data supporting future clinical applications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 3DP bone plate was fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) a…
