Complete mandibular agenesis. Report of a case.

A child had complete mandibular agenesis, with associated anomalies of microstomia, left choanal stenosis, and a cleft soft palate. This child had evidence of disruption in development at about the four-week stage by the persistence of several developmental remnants, specifically, the buccopharyngeal membrane, tongue remnants, and the laryngotracheal groove. The etiology of this condition is unclear at this time.

Clinical aspects of the branchio-oto-renal syndrome.

The branchio-oto-renal syndrome, first defined in 1976, is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by anomalies of the external, middle, and inner ear in association with preauricular sinuses, branchial cleft anomalies, and varying degrees of renal dysplasia, including aplasia. Less frequently expressed phenotypic abnormalities include lacrimal duct aplasia and the stigmata of renal dysgenesis known as Potter facies. Although the precise incidence of the disorder is unknown, it may be more common than is generally appreciated and appears to be distinct from other autosomal dominant otobra

RanBP1, a velocardiofacial/DiGeorge syndrome candidate gene, is expressed at sites of mesenchymal/epithelial induction.

RanBP1, a velocardiofacial syndrome/DiGeorge syndrome candidate gene, is expressed in the frontonasal processes, branchial arches, aortic arches, and limb buds. At these sites, RanBP1 apparently coincides with neural crest-derived mesenchymal cells. In addition, RanBP1 is expressed in the forebrain as well as in hindbrain regions previously associated with crest-derived mesenchymal cells.

A recognizable phenotype related to 19p13.12 microdeletion.

Submicroscopic deletions in chromosome 19 have been rarely reported. We reported a male patient presenting with neurodevelopmental delay and facial dysmorphisms with a de novo 19p13.11p13.12 deletion of approximately 1.4 Mb. To date, there are seven cases with deletions overlapping the 19p13.11-p13.12 region described in the literature. A region of 800 kb for branchial arch defects in the proximal region of 19p13.12, and another minimal critical region of 305 kb for hypertrichosis, synophrys, and protruding front teeth have been proposed previously. We suggest that the shortest region of overl

Image cytometry DNA-analysis of fine needle aspiration cytology to aid cytomorphology in the distinction of branchial cleft cyst from cystic metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Frequently, the distinction between branchial cleft cyst and cystic metastases from squamous cell carcinoma is difficult by cytomorphology. In a prospective study, we investigated the need for, and the value of, image cytometry DNA-analysis as a complement to cytologic evaluation of cystic lesions in the neck. STUDY DESIGN: Image cytometry DNA-analysis was performed on the fine needle aspiration cytology smears from 50 patients, referred to our department, with a solitary cystic lesion in the lateral region of the neck. METHODS: Smears from aspirates were Giemsa stained and cytolo

Treacher Collins syndrome: current evaluation, treatment, and future directions.

OBJECTIVE: Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is an inherited disorder in which there are general bilateral symmetric anomalies of the structures within the first and second branchial arches. In general, there is complete penetrance and variable expressivity of the trait. The craniofacial rehabilitation of a child with TCS is tailored to the extent of the deformities involved: the orbitozygomatic region, the maxillomandibular region, the nose, facial soft tissues, and external and middle ear structures. CONCLUSION: This article reviews the range of clinical features and specific dysmorphology ob

Imaging of nasopharyngeal cysts and bursae.

Cysts and bursae of the nasopharynx are uncommon and seldom symptomatic when compared with malignant tumors of this region. However, it is noteworthy that in the presence of symptoms, a good knowledge of their radiological appearance is useful to establish the correct diagnosis. Cysts of Rathke's pouch, pharyngeal bursa of Luschka, Tornwaldt's cysts, retentional cysts of the seromucinous glands, oncocytic cysts, intra-adenoid cysts, branchial cysts, prevertebral or retropharyngeal abscess and pseudocysts of the nasopharynx will be discussed in this paper.

Osteochondroma of the tongue.

A case is described of osteochondroma of the tongue and the literature on osteomata, chondromata and osteochondromata of the tongue is reviewed. The tendency for these tumours to arise in the region of the foramen caecum has been noted in previous reports as has the female preponderance. It has been suggested that they arise from remnants of branchial arch cartilage. The variation in the duration and age at presentation of the lesion has not been explained and an alternative theory is suggested.

[Incidentally discovered ectopic tissue in the central neck region (level VI) of the neck - A case series, retrospective analysis and literature review].

The thymus derives from the third branchial pouch, which migrates to the mediastinum through the central region of the neck. During the migration, particles split off and develop separately. The prevalence of ectopic thymus is 20-40%. The purpose of this retrospective case series study was to investigate the prevalence of embryological tissue remnants in the central region, in patients treated for thyroid lesions. Between January 1 2018 and September 1 2020, 84 patients who underwent central neck dissection were selected. Clinicopathological data as age, gender, histopathological result and TN

Kidins220/ARMS is dynamically expressed during Xenopus laevis development.

Kidins220 (Kinase D interacting substrate of 220 kDa)/ARMS (Ankyrin Repeat-rich Membrane Spanning) is a conserved scaffold protein that acts as a downstream substrate for protein kinase D and mediates multiple receptor signalling pathways. Despite the dissecting of the function of this protein in mammals, using both in vitro and in vivo studies, a detailed characterization of its gene expression during early phases of embryogenesis has not been described yet. Here, we have used Xenopus laevis as a vertebrate model system to analyze the gene expression and the protein localization of Kidins220/

The Mandibular Angle Hydatid Cyst Mimicking Branchial Cleft Cyst: A Case Report.

We report an unusual case of primary hydatid cyst of the mandibular angle without glands involvement, in the left supraclavicular region of the neck with no involvement of any other regions of the body. In July 2012, a 25-yr old woman, from Golestan Province, Northeast Iran was admitted to our ENT Clinic, with one-year history of a progressively increasing swelling, pain and gradually growing mass located in the left side of neck region. The patient was diagnosed by Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FANC) and histopathology examination. Hydatid cyst should be considered in differential diagnosi

Pilomatrixoma of the head and neck: Typical presentation of a rare lesion.

Pilomatrixomas are benign tumours of primitive hair follicles, usually presenting as painless lumps in the head and neck region in children. As they are uncommon, they are often misdiagnosed clinically. We discuss a case of a five-year-old boy presenting with a five-month history of a pre-auricular lump. The initial clinical differential diagnosis was of a dermoid or a branchial cleft cyst. However, on ultrasonography the lesion was typical of a pilomatrixoma. The imaging literature is reviewed to illustrate the sonographic appearances of pilomatrixomas.

[Branchial cleft cyst carcinoma: a case report and literature review].

The patient complained of a 20 days history of isolated mass in the right cervical region. The lesion was successfully eradicated by surgical removal. Histopathology established branchial cleft cyst carcinoma (BCCC) as the diagnosis. More attentions should be paid to the diagnosis of BCCC. Primary leisions were essential for the suspected cases. Importantly, only after excluding the metastatic squamous carcinoma in lymph nodes and other primary diseases, the diagnosis of BCCC would be established. Therapeutic strategies include complete local excision, radical neck dissection, and post-operati

Bilateral, non-syndromic second branchial cleft fistula in an 8-year-old child: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Second branchial cleft anomalies are the most common congenital cervical malformations, accounting for approximately 90% of branchial cleft lesions. They usually present unilaterally, while bilateral involvement is exceedingly rare and most often associated with genetic syndromes such as branchio-oto-renal (BOR) syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 8-year-old Moroccan boy with no relevant past medical history who presented with bilateral, low-lying paramedian cervical fistulas that had been recurrently infected since early childhood. Clinical examination revealed

Morphological novelty and modest developmental truncation in Barboides, Africa's smallest vertebrates (Teleostei: Cyprinidae).

Miniaturization, the evolution of extremely small adult body size, is widespread amongst animals and commonly associated with novel ecological, physiological, and morphological attributes. The phenotypes of miniaturized taxa are noteworthy because they combine reductions and structural simplifications with novel traits not developed in their larger relatives. Previous research on miniature cyprinid fishes (focused predominantly on South and South East Asian taxa of a single subfamily) has identified two distinct classes of miniature taxa: proportioned dwarves and developmentally truncated mini
