Knowledge and Perception of Breast Density, Screening Mammography, and Supplemental Screening: in Search of "Informed".

BACKGROUND: As of 2019, 37 US states have breast density notification laws. No qualitative study to date has examined women's perspectives about breast density in general or by states with and without notification laws. OBJECTIVE: Explore women's knowledge and perceptions of breast density and experiences of breast cancer screening across three states with and without notification laws. DESIGN: Qualitative research design using four focus groups conducted in 2017. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-seven women who had a recent normal mammogram and dense breasts in registry data obtained through the Breast

Predictors of mammographic density among women with a strong family history of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Mammographic density is one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer. In the general population, mammographic density can be modified by various exposures; whether this is true for women a strong family history is not known. Thus, we evaluated the association between reproductive, hormonal, and lifestyle risk factors and mammographic density among women with a strong family history of breast cancer but no BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation. METHODS: We included 97 premenopausal and 59 postmenopausal women (age range: 27-68 years). Risk factor data was extracted from the research quest

Changes in Bone Mineral Density in Women With Breast Cancer: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer treatment-induced bone loss is an important long-term effect among breast cancer survivors. Little is known, however, about the pattern of bone loss and the factors associated with it. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine annual bone health changes and factors associated with bone loss for 3 years after diagnosis among women with breast cancer. METHODS: Ninety-nine newly diagnosed women with breast cancer (mean age, 51.1 years) were enrolled in a prospective longitudinal study. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at base

The combined effect of mammographic texture and density on breast cancer risk: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Texture patterns have been shown to improve breast cancer risk segregation in addition to area-based mammographic density. The additional value of texture pattern scores on top of volumetric mammographic density measures in a large screening cohort has never been studied. METHODS: Volumetric mammographic density and texture pattern scores were assessed automatically for the first available digital mammography (DM) screening examination of 51,400 women (50-75 years of age) participating in the Dutch biennial breast cancer screening program between 2003 and 2011. The texture assessm

Correlation of mammographic density and serum calcium levels in patients with primary breast cancer.

Percentage mammographic breast density (PMD) is one of the most important risk factors for breast cancer (BC). Calcium, vitamin D, bisphosphonates, and denosumab have been considered and partly confirmed as factors potentially influencing the risk of BC. This retrospective observational study investigated the association between serum calcium level and PMD. A total of 982 BC patients identified in the research database at the University Breast Center for Franconia with unilateral BC, calcium and albumin values, and mammogram at the time of first diagnosis were included. PMD was assessed, using

Breast density in screening mammography in Indian population - Is it different from western population?

Mammography is the only method presently considered appropriate for mass screening of breast cancer. However, higher breast density was strongly associated with lower mammographic sensitivity. Breast density is also identified as independent and strongest risk factors for breast cancer. Studies have shown women with high breast density have four to six times increased risk of breast cancer as compare to women with fatty breast. It varies between different age group it generally decreases with increasing age in postmenopausal women and it can be different in different ethnic groups and people f

Mammographic densities and risk of breast cancer among subjects with a family history of this disease.

BACKGROUND: A family history of breast cancer is known to increase risk of the disease, but other genetic and environmental factors that modify this risk are likely to exist. One of these factors is mammographic density, and we have sought evidence that it is associated with increased risk of breast cancer among women with a family history of breast cancer. METHODS: We used data from a nested case-control study based on the Canadian National Breast Screening Study (NBSS). From 354 case patients with incident breast cancer detected at least 12 months after entry into the NBSS and 354 matched c

Genetic analysis of mammographic breast density in adult women: evidence of a gene effect.

BACKGROUND: The appearance of the female breast viewed by mammography varies considerably from one individual to another because of underlying differences in the relative proportions of fat, connective tissue, and glandular epithelium that combine to create a characteristic pattern of breast density. An association between mammographic patterns and family history of breast cancer has previously been reported. However, this association has not been found in all studies, and few data are available on possible genetic components contributing to mammographic breast density. PURPOSE: Our purpose w

Subgroups varying in risk and density highlight the potential for stratified breast cancer screening.

Most breast cancer screening programs rely only on demographic data without considering individual risk factors of the population, which might limit their effectiveness by over- and underscreening specific subgroups. Therefore, the aim of this study is to highlight health and economic disparities in outcomes from such a uniform screening strategy. With the microsimulation model MISCAN, we simulated outcomes of the Dutch screening program considering 16 subgroups varying by their 5-year breast cancer risk and breast density. All outcomes showed significant disparities across risk-density subgro

Effect of excessive gestational weight on daughters' breast density at the end of puberty onset.

The effect of excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) is related to adverse health outcomes in the offspring; however, its effect on the daughters' breast density is unclear. We aimed to assess the association between EGWG and daughters' breast composition (% of fibroglandular volume (%FGV) and absolute fibroglandular volume (AFGV)) at Tanner stage 4 (Tanner B4)). We included 341 girls and their mothers from an ongoing cohort of low-income Chilean girls born from 2002-2003. Maternal gestational weight gain was self-reported in 2007, and breast density by digital mammography was measured in 20

Mammographic density and risk of breast cancer by tumor characteristics: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: In a previous paper, we had assumed that the risk of screen-detected breast cancer mostly reflects inherent risk, and the risk of whether a breast cancer is interval versus screen-detected mostly reflects risk of masking. We found that inherent risk was predicted by body mass index (BMI) and dense area (DA) or percent dense area (PDA), but not by non-dense area (NDA). Masking, however, was best predicted by PDA but not BMI. In this study, we aimed to investigate if these associations vary by tumor characteristics and mode of detection. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study ne

The Association between Alcohol Consumption and Breast Density: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Percent breast density (PBD) is a strong risk factor for breast cancer that is influenced by several other risk factors for the disease. Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer with an uncertain association with PBD. We have carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association of alcohol consumption with PBD. METHODS: We searched nine databases to identify all relevant studies on the association between alcohol intake and breast density. Two independent investigators evaluated and selected 20 studies that were included in o

Background risk of breast cancer and the association between physical activity and mammographic density.

INTRODUCTION: High physical activity has been shown to decrease the risk of breast cancer, potentially by a mechanism that also reduces mammographic density. We tested the hypothesis that the risk of developing breast cancer in the next 10 years according to the Tyrer-Cuzick prediction model influences the association between physical activity and mammographic density. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of 38,913 Swedish women aged 40-74 years. Physical activity was assessed using the validated web-questionnaire Active-Q and mammographic density was measured by the

Validation of results from knowledge discovery: mass density as a predictor of breast cancer.

The purpose of our study is to identify and quantify the association between high breast mass density and breast malignancy using inductive logic programming (ILP) and conditional probabilities, and validate this association in an independent dataset. We ran our ILP algorithm on 62,219 mammographic abnormalities. We set the Aleph ILP system to generate 10,000 rules per malignant finding with a recall >5% and precision >25%. Aleph reported the best rule for each malignant finding. A total of 80 unique rules were learned. A radiologist reviewed all rules and identified potentially interesting ru

Detection of breast masses in mammograms by density slicing and texture flow-field analysis.

We propose a method for the detection of masses in mammographic images that employs Gaussian smoothing and sub-sampling operations as preprocessing steps. The mass portions are segmented by establishing intensity links from the central portions of masses into the surrounding areas. We introduce methods for analyzing oriented flow-like textural information in mammograms. Features based on flow orientation in adaptive ribbons of pixels across the margins of masses are proposed to classify the regions detected as true mass regions or false-positives (FPs). The methods yielded a mass versus normal

Metallic punctate densities in the breast after Chinese herbal treatment: mammographic findings.

PURPOSE: To describe the mammographic features of metallic punctate densities seen in women who were treated with the herb go-yak for breast abscess and to explain the cause of these findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mammograms showing metallic punctate densities that appeared to be microcalcifications in 34 women were analyzed retrospectively with attention to the location, shape, distribution, and depth of the lesions. In all patients, go-yak was applied into the open wound after abscess drainage 6-42 years before mammography. In six patients, histopathologic specimens were obtained after ne

Effects of oral clodronate on bone mineral density in patients with relapsing breast cancer.

The high prevalence of bone metastases in breast cancer and the risk that spinal and femoral osteoporosis may add further morbidity provide a rationale for bisphosphonate therapy in patients with skeletal metastases from mammary carcinoma. We investigated the effects of oral clodronate given during 9 months, with a 24-month follow-up, on bone mineral density (BMD), on biochemical markers of bone remodeling, and on osseous complications in 67 women with documented relapsing breast cancer, aged 58.7 +/- 1.5 years (x +/- SEM). Patients with active cancer disease were randomly allocated to two gro

Design and measurement of 3D-printed variable-morphology and variable-density breast phantoms for mammography and breast CT dose assessment.

Accurate dose quantification across radiation-based breast imaging techniques is important for patient safety, but currently available phantoms do not easily allow the assessment of the impact of breast size and density across modalities. Here we design, produce, and validate three dimensional (3D)-printed, variable-morphology, fillable phantoms for the purpose of radiation dose measurements and comparison studies. Three representative breast shapes (small, medium, large) were exported from real Breast Computed Tomography (BCT) data. Corresponding compressed shapes were generated following the

Radiation exposure and screening yield by digital breast tomosynthesis compared to mammography: results of the TOSYMA Trial breast density related.

OBJECTIVES: The randomized TOmosynthesis plus SYnthesized MAmmography (TOSYMA) screening trial has shown that digital breast tomosynthesis plus synthesized mammography (DBT + SM) is superior to digital mammography (DM) in invasive breast cancer detection varying with breast density. On the other hand, the overall average glandular dose (AGD) of DBT is higher than that of DM. Comparing the DBT + SM and DM trial arm, we analyzed here the mean AGD and their determinants per breast density category and related them to the respective invasive cancer detection rates (iCDR). METHODS: TOSYMA screened
