Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast: mammographic findings and extent of disease at diagnosis in 184 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast is a distinct malignant neoplasm consisting of small cells that tend to infiltrate in thin strands that are often only one cell in width. The objectives of this study were to determine if these tumors are more frequently overlooked on mammograms than are other types of invasive carcinoma and to evaluate the specific mammographic and pathologic findings of this disease at the time of diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1983 through 1991, invasive, purely lobular carcinoma of the breast was diagnosed in 184 women who had screen-film mammogr

Neoplastic associations of rheumatic diseases and rheumatic manifestations of cancer.

Associations between rheumatic diseases and malignant neoplasms are still inferential and based largely on epidemiologic data. Rheumatoid arthritis predisposes weakly to the occurrence of lymphoreticular neoplasms. This is more clearly true of Sjögren's disease, whether or not it is associated with RA. A subset of DM/PM which becomes manifest in close temporal proximity to a neoplasm may be a paraneoplastic reaction, but DM/PM, in general, does not predispose to neoplasia. Scleroderma in its early phase is associated with the development of breast cancer in women, and after a decade or longer,

High-grade, poorly differentiated breast carcinoma mimicking primary breast lymphoma: a case report of a diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: High-grade breast carcinomas can occasionally exhibit morphological and immunophenotypic features resembling hematolymphoid neoplasms, leading to diagnostic confusion. Accurate diagnosis is essential to guide appropriate therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 35-year-old female presenting with a rapidly enlarging right breast mass. Core biopsy revealed sheets of atypical lymphoid-like cells. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed positivity for cytokeratin, progesterone receptor, CD10, CD117, and BCL2, while CD20, CD3, estrogen receptor, and HER2 were negative, with Ki-67 > 95%. Despi

Metastatic breast cancer presenting as detrusor overactivity.

Breast carcinoma metastatic to the bladder is rare and accounts for approximately 3% of all secondary bladder neoplasms. We examine a case of breast cancer metastatic to the bladder with normal findings at cystoscopy. A 53-year-old woman with a history of breast carcinoma presented with a 6-month history of severe urgency and urgency incontinence. Treatment with multiple antimuscarinic therapies was unsuccessful. Vaginal examination demonstrated a non-mobile uterus with a suggestion of parametrial thickening. Urodynamic studies confirmed detrusor overactivity. CT showed a thickened bladder wal

[Conservative surgical treatment of early carcinoma of the breast].

The natural history of breast cancer related with cellular cytodinamics, hematogenous and lymphatic spreading and host defence is presented. It is underlined that surgical methods did not improve survival rates specially for radical procedures. Conservative managements (tumorectomy, wedge resection, subcutaneous mastectomy) for stages T1 No M0 are evaluated. Diagnostic methods for stage I neoplasms are reported especially for infraclinic stages. Surgical techniques are reviewed in detail for the treatment of primitive neoplasms and lymphonodes. After a full examination of controlled clinical s

Claudin 18 is not a biomarker for breast mucinous tumor.

BACKGROUND: Breast mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (BMCA) is an exceptionally rare malignancy that may resemble mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas, ovary, lung and colorectum. Claudin 18 (CLDN18), particularly its gastric-associated isoform CLDN18.2, is an emerging therapeutic target; however, CLDN18 immunoreactivity has not been systematically evaluated in BMCA. We investigated whether CLDN18 could distinguish BMCA from breast mucinous carcinoma (BMC) and selected extramammary mucinous mimics. METHODS: Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis for CLDN18, CK7 and CK20 was performed on 42 mucinous neopl

Myiasis secondary to Sermatobia hominis (human botfly) presenting as a long-standing breast mass.

A case of a 54-year-old woman who presented with a breast mass is reported. Histologically, a chronic granulomatous inflammatory response was observed. The response was associated with an organism diagnosed as a fly larva, Dermatobia hominis (human botfly). The incidence of myiasis, infestation by fly larvae, presenting as a long-standing breast mass and mimicking a neoplasm is extremely rare, especially in the United States.

Radiation induced esophageal adenocarcinoma in a woman previously treated for breast cancer and renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Secondary radiation-induced cancers are rare but well-documented as long-term side effects of radiation in large populations of breast cancer survivors. Multiple neoplasms are rare. We report a case of esophageal adenocarcinoma in a patient treated previously for breast cancer and clear cell carcinoma of the kidney. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56 year-old non smoking woman, with no alcohol intake and no familial history of cancer; followed in the National Institute of Oncology of Rabat Morocco since 1999 for breast carcinoma, presented on consultation on January 2011 with dysphagia. Metastasis within a pituitary adenoma presenting with bilateral abducens palsies: case report and review of the literature.

A 56-year-old woman with metastatic breast carcinoma presented on her terminal hospital admission with diplopia secondary to bilateral abducens nerve palsies. Postmortem examination revealed a sellar mass composed of an unsuspected pituitary adenoma infiltrated by metastatic carcinoma. Review of the literature revealed only seven patients with this rare neoplasm-to-neoplasm metastasis, none of whom were reported to have had abducens palsies.

Cutaneous adnexal carcinoma with apocrine differentiation.

Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinomas are uncommon malignant neoplasms that can be difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish histologically from metastatic breast carcinomas. We present the case of a 71-year-old man with a 5-year history of extensive ulcerated plaques on the posterior neck and posterior scalp. Biopsy revealed a poorly differentiated infiltrating adenocarcinoma consistent with either primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma or occult metastatic breast carcinoma. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated positive staining for cytokeratin (CK) 7, estrogen receptor, and progesteron

Periductal stromal tumor of the breast; Can we expect the diagnosis? A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Periductal stromal tumors are rare breast neoplasms characterized by a unique combination of epithelial and mesenchymal tissue. Due to their infrequent occurrence, these tumors are often misdiagnosed as other breast lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old female presented with a right breast swelling. She has a sister treated for breast cancer. Imaging revealed a central lesion of mixed density measuring 38 × 20 mm. The provisional diagnosis was a hamartoma BIRADS 3. The patient underwent wide local excision. Microscopic examination demonstrated biphasic fibroep…

Evolving Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Cancer-Related Encounters.

PURPOSE: This is an update to a previously published report characterizing the impact that efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic have had on the normal course of cancer-related encounters. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 22 US health care organizations (members of the TriNetX global network) having relevant, up-to-date encounter data. Although the original study compared encounter data pre-COVID-19 (January-April 2019) with the corresponding months in 2020, this update considers data through April 2021. As before, cohorts were generated for all neoplasm patients (malignant, benign, in sit

Secretory immunoglobulin A in sweat gland tumors.

The presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and secretory component (SC) was investigated in normal human skin and in cutaneous neoplasms including a variety of sweat gland tumors. Immunohistochemistry in normal sweat glands revealed the occurrence of secretory IgA (sIgA) as indicated by reactivity for IgA and SC in serial sections. The majority of 28 cases of sweat gland tumors could be demonstrated to retain their ability to produce IgA and SC. In normal as well as in neoplastic sweat glands heaviest staining for sIgA could be found in the lumina and at the surface of lining epithelia. This is co

Right breast schwannoma in a male: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Schwannoma are benign neoplasms of peripheral nerve sheath. They usually occur in the head, neck and the extremities. Breast is a rare location of Schwannoma. CASE PRESENTATION: Our case describes the occurrence of Schwannoma in the right breast, in a 60-year-old male, who has had a breast lump since the last 6 years. After ultrasonography (showed 3.4 × 2.3 × 2.0 cm heteroechoic mass in the upper outer quadrant of the right breast), and mammography (showed 2.5 × 3.2 cm sized high density mass in upper outer quadrant of right breast), an excisional biopsy was performed, and on hi

Primary Lymphomas of the Breast: A Review.

Lymphomas of the breast are rare neoplasms that arise from breast lymphoid tissue and are characterised by neoplastic B or T cells. Breast lymphomas arising from B cells include, but are not limited to, diffuse large B cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, extra-nodal marginal zone lymphoma and Burkitt lymphoma. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is of a T cell origin and both anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive and ALK-negative presentations have been noted in the breast. In addition, there is a more recently identified presentation of ALK-negative ALCL that arises around textured brea

Myeloid sarcoma with megakaryoblastic differentiation presenting as a breast mass.

Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor that consists of myeloblasts or immature myeloid cells. The neoplasm can occur in any part of the body, including the bone, periosteum, lymph nodes, skin, and soft tissue and they may occur de novo or in association with acute myeloid leukemia, myeloproliferative neoplasms and myelodysplastic syndromes. Most cases display a myelomonocytic or pure monoblastic morphology. Tumors with megakaryoblastic differentiation are extremely uncommon and may occur in association with transformation of a myeloproliferative disorder. Myeloid sarcoma presenting as a b

Triple-negative breast carcinomas of low malignant potential: review on diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses.

Triple-negative breast carcinomas constitute a wide spectrum of lesions, mostly being highly aggressive. Nevertheless, some special histologic subtypes can have low malignant potential. The purpose of the present paper is to review diagnostic criteria and prognostic parameters of breast neoplasms of special histotypes. Specifically, adenoid cystic carcinoma, adenomyoepithelioma, acinic cell carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, tall cell carcinoma with reverse polarity, and secretory carcinoma will be discussed. For each tumour, definition and morphological and molecular features, together with…

Case report: Unique ultrasound feature of thyroid metastases in occult breast cancer.

Occult breast cancer is an uncommon type of breast cancer. Metastases of occult breast cancer to other tissues are rather rare. We present a rare case of thyroid metastases in a 46-year-old woman who underwent occult breast cancer. The first ultrasound (US) examination of the thyroid showed that the left lobe was enlarged but had normal thyroid function. At first, this case was misdiagnosed as thyroiditis based on the thyroid US features. However, the cytological and histological results showed that nests of the neoplastic cells were found. Further immunohistochemistry results confirmed that t

Metastasis to the Pancreas From Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of Breast Cancer: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: The usual locations of metastatic breast neoplasms include the bones, the liver, the lung, and the brain. Breast cancer rarely metastasizes to the pancreas. However, pancreatic metastasis and primary pancreatic cancer are difficult to differentiate because of their similar clinical features and radiological characteristics. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 49-year-old woman initially diagnosed with left breast ductal carcinoma in June 2008. The patient was admitted to the hospital with jaundice after 12 years.
