Primary cardiac tumours are rare in the paediatric age group. Bronchogenic cysts, although relatively rare, represent the most common cystic lesion of the mediastinum. Intracardiac bronchogenic cysts however, are extremely rare. The authors are unaware of any case previously reported in a Nigerian child and hence report the case of a 2-year-old boy for its rarity and interest. The boy was referred for evaluation of a cardiac murmur. Clinical, radiological and electrographic findings were suggestive of mild pulmonary stenosis or an atrial septal defect (ASD). 2-dimensional echocardiography howe…

A 79-year-old female who had been observed for an intrapericardial cyst for 3 years was admitted due to severe dyspnea and back pain. During 3 years observation, there were no symptoms and no growth of the cyst. Computed tomography scans showed rapid expansion of the cyst compared with an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) taken 9-days before when she visited our hospital for the 1st time. Urgent complete extirpation of the tumor was successfully done and a histological diagnosis found it was an intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst. This is a 1st report of intrapericardial bronchogenic cyst of whi…

We present a 35-year-old man with a preoperative diagnosis of a right lower lobe cystic mass. Misled by a radiological suggestion of an intraparenchymal lesion, he had a thoracotomy and right lower lobectomy. An intraoperative finding of a pedunculated cyst arising from the parietal pleural with subsequent histopathology confirmation of a benign bronchogenic cyst, however, would have made a less invasive surgical excision more appropriate.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital lesions that are a remnant from abnormal budding of the embryonic foregut. These cysts are usually single; most cases are either asymptomatic or present with respiratory symptoms. A 43-year-old woman presented with intermittent type II atrioventricular block during cholecystectomy. The cardiac evaluation including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic homogeneous mass within the interatrial septum. The patient underwent surgical resection of the mass and closure of the septal defect. Histopathology …

Congenital midline cervical cleft (CMCC) is an uncommon malformation. We report a case of a baby girl aged 3 days with a CMCC associated with a cyst reported as a bronchogenic cyst (BC). The pathology is not specific. The association of BC and CMCC is extremely rare and only five cases have been found in the literature. We report our case and review the relevant literature.

Primary bronchogenic cysts of cardiac origin or extension are rare. We report here on a 5-year-old girl with a bronchogenic cyst with a diameter of 5.0 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm extending to the right atrial wall. Tumor enucleation and resection of the cyst together with the invaded right atrial wall was performed through a right posterolateral thoracotomy and an opening in the lateral pericardium. Resection of intrapericardial bronchogenic cysts is possible, although extensive invasion of cardiac structures may necessitate the use of cardiopulmonary bypass through a sternotomy.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital malformations of ventral foregut development. They are usually located in the mediastinum and intrapulmonary regions. Localization in the cervical area is unusual and the majority of cases reported have been found in the pediatric population: the literature reports few cases in adults. We describe a 57-year-old male who presented an asymptomatic right lateral neck mass. Diagnostic studies included chest X-ray, pharyngo-esophagus double-contrast X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and bronchoscopy. The mass was excised through a transverse right cervical skin…

A large cystic mass was found in the subdiaphragmatic region of a 46-year-old woman who had complained of continuous pain in the left flank … iated pseudostratified or tall columnar epithelium without dysplastic changes. Thus, a diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst, which is usually discovered in the posterior part of the mediastinum, was made. A rare case of bronchogenic cyst and a literature review is presented.

We report the case of a 17-year old girl presenting a 3-month history of progressive dysphonia, and ultimately acute respiratory failure. CT scan and bronchoscopy showed severe extrinsic compression of the carina and of the left main stem bronchus. Emergency thoracotomy was performed permitting complete resection of an intra mural oesophageal bronchogenic cyst. The post operative course was uneventful except a persistent dysphonia. Dysphonia is an exceptional early symptom of bronchogenic cyst located in the oesophageal wall.

Objective: This study was designed to summarize the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of pharyngeal bronchogenic cysts in children to help in making the correct diagnosis and developing an appropriate treatment plan. Methods: The clinical data of 13 children with bronchogenic cysts in the pharynx, who were treated in otolaryngology head and neck surgery department between September 2013 and July 2019, were analyzed retrospectively. The clinical characteristics were evaluated, and the related factors for diagnosis and treatment were analyzed. Clinical characteristics and imaging…

A 34-year-old man presented with sudden back pain and dyspnea. Chest X-ray showed left-sided massive pleural effusion. Chest computed tomogr … ated epithelial cells, mucinous glands, and cartilage compatible with the diagnostic criteria for a bronchogenic cyst. Malignant transformation was not observed. Common clinical presentations of bronchogenic cysts include pain, dyspnea, and cough. Although rare, the risk of hemorrhage from bronchogenic cysts and subsequent development of hemothorax should not be un …

Intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts are rare in adults and most are outside the trachea and bronchi. There are reports of clear link with the trachea, but the cyst itself occurs outside the trachea. Thus, bronchoscopy will not reveal the cause, which often leads to a diagnosis by surgical resection. We herein report an extremely rare case of an intrapulmonary bronchogenic cyst that was located entirely within the left main bronchial lumen. Bronchoscopy revealed a shiny and smooth surface mass with abundant blood vessels in the lumen that blocked the left main bronchus. The patient was successful…

We report histological appearance of a bronchogenic cyst that was incidentally found in a 78-year-old man who died from drowning related to a traumatic accident. The cyst was found in the posterior edge of the interventricular septum and was monolocular with a 5-mm diameter. The cystic wall was not associated with cartilage or the smooth muscle layer, and was lined by ciliated respiratory epithelium. Immunohistochemistry showed that many of these epithelial cells were positive for cytokeratin 7 and thyroid transcription factor-1. A few of the cells were positive for CA19-9, chromogranin A, syn…

Bronchogenic cysts (BC) are congenital abnormalities that occur most commonly within the mediastinum, and rarely occur within the diaphragm. We present the 21st case of an intradiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst in the English literature, and review all previous published cases. Analysis includes presenting clinical symptoms, relevant radiologic studies, surgical approaches to resection, and management of the diaphragm, among other relevant data. These lesions should remain on the differential diagnosis in cases of unusual masses in the region of the diaphragm.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital cystic lesions of foregut origin, usually intrapulmonary or mediastinal, while esophageal cysts generally originate within the esophagus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of a completely intramural bronchogenic cyst of the cervical esophagus in a neonate.

A twenty-eight year old male with a cervical mass, complaining of hoarseness and weight loss, was referred to our clinic. A 3 x 4 cm cystic lesion localizing in the region of the suprajugular notch was seen with the aid of computerized chest tomography. A cervical ultrasound confirmed that it was a cystic lesion. It was discovered that the right vocal cord was paralytic after an ear-nose-throat examination. A percutaneous needle biopsy did not provide a diagnosis. The cyst was completely excised via suprajugular incision. Histopathologic examination showed that it was a bronchogenic cyst. The …
