Group B streptococcal meningitis in an adult: A possible complication of olecranon bursitis.

BACKGROUND: We report a man with septic olecranon bursitis who had an early development of meningitis. CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old man presented to the emergency room with malaise, headache, mental confusion, a fever unsuccessfully treated with oral NSAIDs and ice, and with a 10-day history of pain and swelling in his right elbow. Clinical and laboratory evaluation excluded other causes and microbiological evaluation documented a S. agalactiae infection. Antibiotic treatment induced a rapid improvement, without the development of side effects. CONCLUSION: This is the first report on olecrano

Retrocalcaneal bursitis but not Achilles tendinopathy is characterized by increased pressure in the retrocalcaneal bursa.

BACKGROUND: We questioned whether different forms of Achilles tendon overuse injuries can be differentiated by retrocalcaneal bursa pressure measurement. METHODS: Retrocalcaneal bursa pressure was determined by using invasive pressure measurement in patients suffering from retrocalcaneal bursitis (n=13) or Achilles tendinopathy (n=15), respectively. Standardized measurements were taken with the subject lying prone. Initially, the foot and ankle was in a spontaneous, unsupported position. Then passive dorsiflexion was induced by an increasing pressure which was applied in five defined steps ag

Massive subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis with rice bodies secondary to an orthopedic implant.

Both early and late complications following open reduction and internal fixation of proximal humerus fractures have been reported extensively in the literature. Although orthopedic implants are known to cause irritation and inflammation, to our knowledge, this is the first case report to describe a patient with rice bodies secondary to an orthopedic implant. Although the etiology of rice bodies is unclear, histological studies reveal that they are composed of an inner amorphous core surrounded by collagen and fibrin. The differential diagnosis in this case included synovial chondromatosis, inf

[Bursitis with severe tendon and muscle necrosis on the lateral stifle area in cattle].

In 21 animals, chronic swelling on the lateral aspect of the stifle also known as «perigonitis», «stable-syndrome» or «bursitis bicipitalis femoris» were evaluated. Ultrasonography showed increased fluid in the distal subtendinous bursa of the biceps femoris muscle and structural changes in the tendons, muscles, subcutis and fasciae. Soft tissue swelling and an irregular contour of the lateral tibial condyle were typical signs on radiographs. Macroscopic changes were found at the insertion of the biceps femoris muscle, the distal subtendinous bursa of the biceps femoris muscle, the lateral col

Inguinal pain with limping: Iliopectineal bursitis as first sign of polymyalgia rheumatica.

An 83-year-old man presented with pain in his right groin, limping, and the ultrasound findings of an iliopectineal bursitis as the first sign of polymyalgia rheumatica. The systemic disease of polymyalgia rheumatica may begin with local signs caused by peripheral musculoskeletal inflammation. Ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is appropriate in order to decide on early oral prednisolone.

Z-lengthening of the iliotibial band to treat recalcitrant cases of trochanteric bursitis.

Greater trochanteric bursitis is a relatively common presentation at hip clinics. It presents with pain around the greater trochanter. Diagnosis is usually made on clinical grounds when other hip and spinal pathologies are ruled out and there is tenderness present over the trochanteric region. Rheumatoid arthritis (1), athletic injury (2), total hip arthroplasty (3) and idiopathic disease (4) are some of the known causes of trochanteric bursitis. Treatment is mainly non-operative and expectant; however various operative interventions have been described in the literature. We present a series o

MRI appearance of retrocalcaneal bursitis and rheumatoid nodule in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology characterized by symmetric, erosive synovitis and sometimes multisystem involvement. Rheumatoid nodules have been reported in as many as 20-30% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis; however, they are not commonly seen in the feet. We present magnetic resonance (MR) findings of a rarely seen case of rheumatoid bursitis in the retrocalcaneal bursa associated with a subcutaneous rheumatoid nodule inferior to the calcaneus which histologically confirmed the rheumatoid arthritis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case

[Subcutaneous trochanteric bursitis: an unrecognized cause of peritrochanteric pain revealed by imaging].

We present four cases of subcutanea trochanterica bursitis (one involving both sides). The bursitis was acute and inflammatory in two cases, chronic and microtraumatic in one, asymptomatic in one and septic in the last case. The acutely inflamed bursa may contain a blood effusion increasing the pain. CT and MRI provide distinctive images for the diagnosis of these particular types of periarticular diseases.

[Infectious bursitis: study of 40 cases in the pre-patellar and olecranon regions].

BACKGROUND: Septic bursitis usually affects subcutaneous localized bursae such the prepatellar and elbow bursae. This condition is infrequently reported in the spanish medical literature. The aim of this report was to study patients suffering from septic bursitis with regard to predisposing conditions, the causative agents, therapy and clinical outcome. METHOD: A retrospective study was undertaken in patients with infectious bursitis attended in the Service of Rheumatology of the POVISA Medical Centre (Vigo) and Juan Canalejo Hospital (La Coruña), Spain, from january 1989 to january 1995. Septic ischial bursitis in systemic lupus erythematosus presenting as a perirectal mass.

We describe a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus with dissection of a large ischial bursal cyst which presented as a perirectal mass. Dissecting bursal and articular synovial cysts are known to cause multiple complications including a number of "pseudosyndromes" such as pseudothrombophlebitis. The cyst in this case was initially thought to represent a perirectal abscess and we propose the term "pseudoperirectal abscess" to describe this condition. This cyst was found to be infected and required an extended course of antibiotics and bursectomy.

Anserina bursitis. A treatable cause of knee pain in patients with degenerative arthritis.

The anserina bursa is located on the medial surface of the tibia deep to the tendons of the sartorius, gracilis, and semimembranosus muscles and superficial to the insertion of the tibial collateral ligament. Knee pain, a palpable swelling of the bursa, and tenderness over the medial anterior aspect of the tibia just below the knee are the hallmarks of anserina bursitis. In a three-year period, 24 patients with anserina bursitis were seen in a rheumatology clinic. All but one were women, 18 were obese, and only four were under 50 years old. Knee x-ray studies showed degenerative arthritis in 2

Rheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Shoulder Rice Body Bursitis: Arthroscopic Management and Mechanistic Implications.

BACKGROUND Rice body bursitis is a rare synovial lesion with an incompletely understood pathogenesis. It typically manifests as painless joint swelling and may involve bursae around joints throughout the body. Due to the lack of specific symptoms, this condition is frequently misdiagnosed or overlooked, resulting in delayed treatment. This report describes a case of rice body bursitis of the shoulder joint secondary to rheumatoid arthritis. CASE REPORT A 55-year-old woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis presented with 1 month of right shoulder swelling, pain, and restricted motion. Phys

Risk Factors for Trochanteric Bursitis Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Radiographic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Trochanteric bursitis (TB) is a prevalent complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA), with increased offset hypothesized as a potential risk factor. This study investigated potential TB predictors in THA patients, including radiographic measurements of offset and leg length, comorbidities, and patient characteristics. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, all THA patients from a single academic tertiary care center between 2005 and 2021 were reviewed. Exclusion criteria included less than one-year follow-up, osteonecrosis, or fracture. Manual radiographic measureme
