Capture ELISAs with biotinylated monospecific antibodies were developed to detect both C-reactive protein (CRP) and haptoglobin (Hp) in serum of adult periodontitis (AP) patients and normal subjects. Each acute-phase reactant was significantly increased in serum from AP patients with CRP at 9.12 +/- 1.61 mg/l versus 2.17 +/- 0.41 mg/l (P < 0.001) and Hp at 3.68 +/- 0.37 g/l versus 1.12 +/- 0.78 g/l (P < 0.001). Assessment of clinical characteristics of the patients' periodontal disease indicated that CRP and Hp levels were significantly increased in patients with the most frequent disease acti…

In the absence of specific antibody, opsonization of Streptococcus pneumoniae may be mediated by the alternative complement pathway (AP) or by C-reactive protein (CRP) via C1 binding. To determine the role of these mechanisms in pneumococcal (PNC) disease, we studied 19 patients with differing severities of PNC infection. C4 and CRP levels and zymosan-induced consumption of 50% hemolytic complement (CH50) were measured in specimens obtained acutely and then weekly. In patients with complicated illness, the modified mean CH50 in acute sera was 178 +/- 57 U/ml, significantly lower than the mean …

Serum beta 2-microglobulin concentrations were assayed in a number of virus diseases. Infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus, and influenza A were associated with pronounced increases in serum beta 2-microglobulin concentration. Smaller increases, with values generally less than 4 mg/l, were noted in other viral infections. Apart from in acute influenza A, the C reactive protein and beta 2-microglobulin responses were not associated.

The value of C reactive protein measurement in the differential diagnosis of meningitis was assessed in a population where tuberculous meningitis is prevalent. C reactive protein was measured serially with a sensitive radioimmunoassay in sera from 31 children with bacterial meningitis, 15 with tuberculous meningitis (6 with miliary tuberculosis), and 28 with viral meningitis. Concentrations of C reactive protein in patients with tuberculous meningitis lay between those of patients with bacterial and viral meningitis--a finding which detracts from the virtually absolute discrimination C reactiv

Peripheral blood lymphocytes binding CRP and streptococcal membrane antigens were studied in 19 patients with ARF with the use of a number of paired analyses for cell surface markers. A small fraction (6.9%) of T cells showed binding to streptococcal membrane. A large degree of overlap (38% to 46%) occurred in membrane-binding T cells and those with identifiable CRP. One third of T gamma cells showed CRP bindings, and approximately one quarter to T gamma cells in both ARF patients and normal controls showed membrane la antigen. A considerable concordance (50% to 75%) was noted between T cells

Synovial biopsies from 8 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 2 patients with degenerative osteoarthritis, and 4 patients with nonarthritic disease were studied for localization of C-reactive protein (CRP) using immunofluorescence microscopy. The nuclei of many synoviocytes and histiocytes in rheumatoid synovial membrane were found to bind CRP. Cultures of rheumatoid synovium in 14C-labeled amino acids produced radioactive IgG, IgM, IgA, and C3; but not CRP, indicating the synovial-bound CRP was not of local origin. A few CRP-binding nuclei were present in one osteoarthritis synovium, but none …

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and obesity are often present concomitantly. Their potential contribution to inflammation remains an ongoing debate. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether variables of sleep-disordered breathing are associated with levels of myeloid-related protein-8/14 (MRP-8/14) or C-reactive protein (CRP), and to characterize how adiposity interacts with these associations in individuals evaluated for possible OSA.
METHODS: Consecutive individuals referred to Lovisenberg Diakonale Hospital's sleep laboratory between 1st October 2009 and 1st March…

We examined serum amyloid protein A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as inflammatory markers of viral and bacterial infections. Both acute-phase reactants increased in the acute stage and thereafter decreased in the convalescent stage. In viral infections, the mean serum concentrations of SAA during the acute stage were 141 mg/L in infections with adenovirus, 77 mg/L with measles virus, 63 mg/L with influenza virus, 55 mg/L with parainfluenza virus, 31 mg/L with respiratory syncytial virus, and 31 mg/L in aseptic meningitis. The mean serum concentration of CRP was 19 mg/L for adenovirus infe…

INTRODUCTION: Numerous clinical studies related the plasma level of C-reactive protein (CRP) to the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) independent of the kind of disease. The molecular regulation of the process is unknown.
METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of 10 previous studies and experimentally probed for a direct action of CRP on red blood cells (RBCs) by different methods including determination of a microscopic aggregation index, Ca(2+) imaging and analysis of sedimentation experiments.
RESULTS: The meta-analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation (Pearson coefficie…

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an important molecule in the defence against bacterial infections. To discover if variation in the CRP gene is associated with clinical outcome of bacteraemia, we investigated 147 microbiologically verified bacteraemia patients (mean age 59 y, range 19-93 y) and determined whether CRP -717A>G, +1059G>C or +1444C>T single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were associated with clinical outcome of bacteraemia and/or CRP concentration caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, beta-haemolytic streptococci or Escherichia coli. The patients were genotyped fo…

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a nonspecific but sensitive marker of inflammation. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-1, and tumor necrosis factor alpha induce the synthesis of CRP in hepatocytes. Increased CRP level is considered to be an important risk factor for atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease, and ischemic stroke. It is positively correlated with weight loss, anorexia-cachexia syndrome, extent of disease, and recurrence in advanced cancer. Its role as a predictor of survival has been shown in multiple myeloma, melanoma, lymphoma, ovarian, renal, pancreatic, and gastr…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare serum amyloid A (SAA) protein levels with high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels as markers of systemic inflammation in patients with chronic periodontitis. The association of serum titers of antibodies to periodontal microbiota and SAA/hs-CRP levels in periodontitis patients was also studied.
METHODS: A total of 110 individuals were included in this study. Patients were assessed for levels of hs-CRP and SAA. Nonfasting blood samples were collected from participants at the time of clinical examination. The diagnosis of adipose tissu…

BACKGROUND: The microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) is a heterodimeric lipid transfer protein that consists of a large unique 97-kDA subunit and protein disulfide isomerase. MTP is involved in the assembly of apoB-containing lipoprotein and enables the secretion of VLDLs by the liver and chylomicrons by the intestine. The MTP gene is highly polymorphic. The less common T variant has been associated with the reduction of plasma LDL-cholesterol levels and with an increased risk in coronary heart disease. We hypothesized that MTP polymorphism could be associated to LDL-cholesterol leve

Iron availability is a prerequisite for an efficient hematopoietic response to erythropoietin. Dynamic evaluation of iron status is difficult in hemodialysis patients and can be further complicated by the presence of an inflammatory state. Several cytokines, in particular interleukin 6 (IL-6), stimulate the production of hepcidin in the liver. This hormone is the main regulator of the extracellular iron concentration through its effect on the iron channel ferroportin, present in several cell types. IL-6 is also the major stimulus for the production of C-reactive protein (CRP), a nonspecific bu…
