Dystrophic calcinosis cutis is diagnosed when calcium is deposited into previously damaged tissue by connective tissue disease, panniculitis, pseudoxanthoma elasticum or trauma. We report a case of dystrophic calcinosis cutis arising from the lesion of an epidermal cyst on the verrucous epidermal nevus. A 20-year-old woman presented with a polypoid pinkish tumor on a brownish, verrucous plaque. Histopathological findings of the pinkish tumor showed calcium deposits as amorphous, basophilic material lining the true epidermis in the upper dermis, which were compatible with dystrophic calcinosis …

Calcinosis cutis, one of the rare manifestations of systemic calcinosis, is characterized by the deposition of calcium and phosphate salts in the skin. Metastatic calcinosis, usually a late complication of chronic renal failure, arises from increased calcium or phosphate levels in the serum or both. Both sexes and all ages may be affected; however, cutaneous involvement is uncommon, particularly in children. We present the youngest patient, to our knowledge, with end-stage renal disease and cutaneous metastatic calcification resulting from secondary hyperparathyroidism. A 2-month-old infant pr…

BACKGROUND: Calcinosis cutis is a disorder caused by abnormal deposits of calcium phosphate in the skin and is observed in diverse disorders. Myo-inositol hexaphosphate (InsP(6)) is a diet-dependent molecule found in all mammalian fluids and tissues, which exhibits an extraordinary capacity as a crystallization inhibitor of calcium salts.
OBJECTIVES: To establish the effects of topically administered InsP(6) cream on artificially provoked dystrophic calcifications in soft tissues.
METHODS: Fourteen male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into two groups: control and treated groups. Rats were…

A case of Raynaud's phenomenon, was complicated with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) during the clinical course, and subsequently with gangrene of the fingertips caused by CRST syndrome (calcinosis cutis, Raynaud's phenomenon, sclerodactyly and telangiectasia). The presence of anticentromere antibodies is rare in AIH; to date, there has been only one report of a combination of AIH and CRST syndrome. This combination of the two diseases has been identified only in Japan.

Pancreatitis developed in a 12-year-old girl with a one-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus. The pancreatitis was first manifested by panniculitis of the lower extremities. Calcinosis cutis subsequently developed, both in areas of panniculitis and in areas free of panniculitis. The patient's medications at the time of onset of pancreatitis included prednisone, hydrochlorothiazide, and azathioprine, all of which have been reported to be causes of pancreatitis. We wish to alert physicians that pancreatitis associated with cutaneous panniculitis and calcinosis cutis may develop in childr…

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy presenting with eruptive syringomas and macroscopic lesions of calcinosis cutis resembling subepidermal calcified nodules. Literature review revealed eruptive syringomas can be associated with calcinosis cutis with several different presentations. In this report, we review the five different presentations and associations of eruptive syringomas and calcinosis cutis, which to our knowledge has not been categorized before.

We report an 11-year-old girl who presented with white papules on the dorsal and palmar region of the hands bilaterally. The parents reporte … e of calcium deposits without tissue damage, thus confirming the diagnosis of milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis. At 6-month follow up, the lesions had completely disappeared. Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis is a benign cutaneous disorder consisting of calcium deposits in an apparently undamaged dermis and is typically associated with Down syndrome. Up …

Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC) is characterized by smooth, firm, whitish papules resembling milia. Histologically, it appears as a well-defined, round, basophilic nodule within the upper dermis. Although the etiology and treatment remain unclear, it may resolve spontaneously. Some cases have been associated with Down syndrome, and the mean age of MICC patients was 9.9 years old. Herein, we report a rare case of MICC that was not associated with Down syndrome. Noticeably, the patient, a toddler, was born as a premature baby and had an ischemic injury on the right foot at birth. H…

Calcinosis cutis is a common clinical feature of dermatomyositis and scleroderma but rarely reported in association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Calcinosis cutis in SLE occurs without calcium and phosphorus metabolic abnormalities and may be localized or generalized. The pathophysiology remains unclear and no effective therapy is currently available. We report a 30-year-old woman with a 13-year history of SLE who developed multiple calcinosis cutis around both knees and we review the relevant published work.

Calcinosis cutis is a common ailment of the skin, caused by the accumulation of calcium salts in the subcutaneous regions, though there are rare case reports from rural Maharashtra region. This condition is usually asymptomatic and might manifest as a single growth or several different-sized growths. Its clinical presentation is observed as nodules or plaques without causing injury to underlying tissues. The condition is reported to be a secondary presentation to trauma, malignancies, and connective tissue diseases and has multifactorial underlying etiologies. Recommendation for treatments inc…

Calcinosis of soft tissue is a rare but known complication of dermatomyositis (DM), mostly associated with juvenile DM and rare in adult DM. Bone scan with Tc-99m Methylene diphosphonate is useful in disease mapping and has high sensitivity to know the extent of calcinosis. However, there is scanty literature available on the utility of bone scan in treatment response evaluation in DM. Rituximab has been found useful in adult DM with calcinosis unresponsive to conventional treatment. We describe an interesting case showing partial response to rituximab on bone scan with single-photon emission

A 2-year-old, spayed female standard schnauzer dog was presented with a history of urinary incontinence and painful whitish lesions localized to the vulvar region. An ectopic ureter was diagnosed by cystoscopy. Histopathology of the biopsy specimens from the vulvar lesions was compatible with calcinosis cutis. Seven weeks following the cystoscopic laser ablation of the ectopic ureter and resolution of the urinary incontinence, the calcinosis cutis lesions completely resolved without any specific treatment. To the authors' knowledge, vulvar calcinosis cutis secondary to urinary incontinence has…

The purpose of this case study is to describe the surgical treatment of idiopathic ulcerative cutaneous calcinosis or calcinosis cutis of the lower extremity. A 77-year-old Latin American female who reported no significant past medical history presented to our hospital's emergency department from her home complaining of worsening right lower extremity erythema, edema, increased temperature, and pain. It was noted that the patient presented with multiple cutaneous calcified nodules to bilateral lower extremities, which she stated has been present for approximately 40 years. At the time of evalu…
