Elementary-body virus isolated from clinical trachoma in California.

From an adult white resident of California with clinically typical early trachoma a virus was isolated by growth in embryonated eggs. Morphologically and serologically the virus belongs in the psittacosis-lymphogranuloma group. When it is instilled into monkey eyes it produces acute follicular conjunctivitis with typical inclusion bodies.

Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease; incidence in California.

The statistics quoted in this and other published reports appear to substantiate the impression that rheumatic fever in California, although still an important public health problem which varies widely from one locality to another, is of lower incidence and perhaps of more benign character than in most other parts of the United States. It also appears that in California aortic insufficiency may be of higher relative incidence and occurs more frequently as a clinically diagnosable sequel of rheumatic fever than does classical mitral stenosis. Congenital defects of the heart constitute a large p

Seasonal prevalence and intensity of hookworms (Uncinaria spp.) in California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups born in 2002 on San Miguel Island, California.

Intestines of California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups (n= 204), born in 2002 on San Miguel Island, California, were examined for hookworms (Uncinaria spp.) as part of a seasonal mortality study from June through December 2002 and January 2003. The investigation was planned to coincide with most of the previously established hookworm infection period of the pups. Prevalence of hookworms in dead pups was 100% for each month of the study. The geometric mean intensity of infections per month was: 94.03 (n=30) for June, 629.09 (n=50) for July, 319.90 (n=31) for August, 159.90 (n=30) for O

Fire risk to structures in California's Wildland-Urban Interface.

The destructive impacts of wildfires on people, property and the environment have dramatically increased, especially in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) in California. In these areas structures are threatened by both approaching flames and lofted embers which spread fire into and within communities. While independent factors influencing structure fire protection are well known, their combined effects remain largely unquantified, limiting the accuracy of risk assessments and mitigation strategies. Here, we examine five major historical WUI fires-2017 Tubbs, 2017 Thomas, 2018 Camp, 2019 Kincad

Prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium in a Southern California patient population.

Mycoplasma genitalium as a cause of genitourinary sexually transmitted disease symptoms often goes underdiagnosed in many patient populations. We investigated a patient population in Southern California at high risk for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhea (NG) infections to determine whether they also may be at high risk for Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) sexually transmitted infections that may be going untreated. We found that there was a relatively high prevalence of CT (13.9 %) and NG (9.0 %) in our population, but there was also a relatively high prevalence of undiagnosed MG in

Trends in HIE and Use of Hypothermia in California: Opportunities for Improvement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH), a proven treatment of moderate-severe HIE, was first used clinically after 2006. We describe trends in HIE diagnosis and use of TH over a 10-year period in California. METHODS: We identified 62 888 infants, ≥36 weeks gestation, who were cared for in California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative-participating NICUs between 2010 and 2019, and linked them to birth certificate data. We evaluated trends in HIE diagnosis and use of TH. RESULTS: Ov

Household Transmission of Mpox to Children and Adolescents, California, 2022.

BACKGROUND: In California, the 2022 mpox outbreak cumulated 5572 cases, 20% of US cases, as of November 28, 2022; 0.3% of cases were among children <16 years old. The secondary attack rate (SAR) for children sharing households with infected adults is unknown. METHODS: A line list of pediatric mpox household contacts aged <16 years reported through August 31, 2022 was created. It included demographic and clinical information on the contacts. Pediatric contact lists were crossmatched with the state vaccination database to identify those who received postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) with the JYNNE

California's Public Safety Realignment Act and prisoner mortality.

In 2011, a historic Supreme Court decision mandated that the state of California substantially reduce its prison population to alleviate overcrowding, which was deemed so severe as to preclude the provision of adequate healthcare. To comply, California passed the Public Safety Realignment Act (Assembly Bill [AB] 109), representing the largest ever court-ordered reduction of a prison population in U.S. history. AB109 was successful in reducing the state prison population; however, although the policy was precipitated by inadequate healthcare in state prisons, no studies have examined its effect

Neighborhood disinvestment and severe maternal morbidity in the state of California.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health, including neighborhood context, may be a key driver of severe maternal morbidity and its related racial and ethnic inequities; however, investigations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the associations between neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics and severe maternal morbidity, as well as whether the associations between neighborhood socioeconomic characteristics and severe maternal morbidity were modified by race and ethnicity. STUDY DESIGN: This study leveraged a California statewide data resource on all hospital births a

Disseminated Histoplasmosis in Central California Seen in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic fungus found in certain parts of North, Central, and South America. Transmission is primarily through airborne inoculation from inhaled fungal microconidia. Histoplasmosis is typically a self-limited mycosis; however, in patients with immunodeficiency, disseminated disease can occur and may lead to high disease burden. This report studies a case of disseminated histoplasmosis in a patient newly diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus. His presentation on admission was consistent with infectious pulmonary granulomatous disease, and further imaging and l

California Serogroup Viruses in a Changing Canadian Arctic: A Review.

The Arctic is warming at four times the global rate, changing the diversity, activity and distribution of vectors and associated pathogens. While the Arctic is not often considered a hotbed of vector-borne diseases, Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) and Snowshoe Hare virus (SSHV) are mosquito-borne zoonotic viruses of the California serogroup endemic to the Canadian North. The viruses are maintained by transovarial transmission in vectors and circulate among vertebrate hosts, both of which are not well characterized in Arctic regions. While most human infections are subclinical or mild, serious cas

Retrospective study of pneumonia in non-racing horses in California.

Pneumonia is a significant disease of horses. Although pneumonia has traditionally been studied in racehorses, little information is available for non-racing horses. Non-racing horses that died with pulmonary lesions (n = 156) were available from cases submitted for autopsy from January 2015 to June 2020. Bronchopneumonia (35%), interstitial pneumonia (29%), embolic pneumonia (21%), granulomatous pneumonia (13%), and pleuritis (2%) were observed in the examined horses. Seventy-four horses died or were euthanized because of pulmonary diseases, and 82 horses died or were euthanized because of no

Bedaquiline for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and QTc prolongation in California.

BACKGROUND: Bedaquiline (BDQ) is recommended for the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB), however, it has the potential to prolong QTc interval. We assessed the frequency and severity of QTc prolongation in patients receiving BDQ in California. METHODS: Based on chart review for patients receiving BDQ as part of MDR TB therapy from January 2013-May 2019, we analyzed QTc values at six pre-specified time points during BDQ therapy (baseline, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks), as well as peak QTc, time to peak QTc, and the clinical characteristics of patients who had QTc elevation >50

Hyperlocalized Measures of Air Pollution and Preeclampsia in Oakland, California.

Exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), black carbon (BC), and ultrafine particles (UFPs) during pregnancy may increase the risk of preeclampsia, but previous studies have not assessed hyperlocalized differences in pollutant levels, which may cause exposure misclassification. We used data from Google Street View cars with mobile air monitors that repeatedly sampled NO2, BC, and UFPs every 30 m in Downtown and West Oakland neighborhoods during 2015-2017. Data were linked to electronic health records of pregnant women in the 2014-2016 Sutter Health population, who resided within 120 m of monitoring
