Research Trends in Acupuncture for Cancer Pain: A Bibliometric Analysis.

Approximately 44% of cancer patients experience pain, with over 50% affected in advanced stages. Opioid therapy, though standard, carries significant side effects. Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese therapy, has shown potential in relieving cancer pain with minimal adverse reactions. This study used bibliometric methods to identify research hotspots and frontiers in acupuncture for cancer pain. Publications (2010-2025) were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, PubMed, and Scopus. CiteSpace 6.4.R1 and VOSviewer 1.6.20 were used for bibliometric and thematic analysis, examining cou…

Functional Radiosurgery in the Management of Cancer Pain: A Comprehensive Review.

Functional radiosurgery is a minimally invasive and highly precise approach to managing refractory cancer pain, offering targeted interventions for both nociceptive and neuropathic pain mechanisms. By focusing on key neuroanatomical targets, such as the thalamus, cingulate cortex, pituitary gland, celiac plexus, and dorsal root ganglia, functional radiosurgery provides effective relief for complex pain syndromes that are often unresponsive to conventional therapies. Advances in imaging and treatment delivery have enhanced the safety and efficacy of these techniques, allowing clinicians to tail…

[Scrotal pain as the presenting symptom of metastatic sigmoid cancer].

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies globally, and typical sites of metastasis include the liver and lungs; however, metastasis to the testes is exceedingly rare. We report a case where a 54-year-old male presented with acute scrotal pain and swelling. Scrotal ultrasound revealed a solid mass, and further investigations identified metastatic adenocarcinoma originating from the sigmoid colon. This case highlights the importance of considering malignancy in older patients with scrotal symptoms, especially when common causes have been ruled out.

Bipolar radiofrequency ablation for cancer pain in the trigeminal distribution.

Tumours in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are associated with a more significant decrease in quality of life compared with the rest of patients with cancer. We present a patient with pain due to HNC successfully treated with bipolar radiofrequency ablation. A man in his 70s presented with a tumour in the left V2 and V3 region, with disabling pain, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score of 10/10, pain on swallowing, chewing and speaking, 3 months of evolution. The patient was evaluated in the pain management department, and the interventional treatment proposed consisted of bipolar pulsed

Methadone for Cancer Pain Management in Children: A Review of Literature.

Pain associated with cancer is a common feature among children and adolescents. Among opioids, methadone is a unique drug for its multiple mechanisms of action. Methadone is currently underutilized in children. The use of methadone for cancer pain management in children was assessed in a systematic review. Altogether, 141 children receiving methadone were examined, and another 126 children were assessed for QT prolongation. In the clinical studies, modalities of use, dosing, and duration of assessment were highly variable. In general, methadone was effective and well tolerated with a limited t…

Neurostimulation for the Treatment of Cancer-Induced Pain: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: Cancer pain is among the most prevalent and challenging symptoms in cancer care, with up to 95% of patients with late-stage cancer experiencing moderate-to-severe pain. Conventional pharmacologic treatments, including opioids, carry risks, and patients' conditions may be refractory to medical management or have contraindications. Neurostimulation techniques, such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS), dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS), and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), have shown promise in treating treatment-induced cancer pain. However, a comprehensive review focusing on t…

Establishing a new model of cancer neuropathic pain in rats.

To guide the treatment of malignant neuropathic pain (MNP) in clinical practice, by inoculating MADB-106 breast cancer cells into the right L4 nerve root in Sprague-Dawley rats, a rat model of MNP was established, providing basic conditions for the study of neuropathic pain and development and application of therapeutic drugs. As the tumor grew over time, it pressed the nerve roots, causing nerve damage. The spinal nerve ligation (SNL) model, which is a neuropathic pain model widely used in rats, was compared with the L4 nerve root SNL model, and histologic examination of the nerve tissue of b

Flupirtine in the Management of Taxane-induced Pain in Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Paclitaxel and docetaxel are two commonly used chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment of various types of cancers. However, debilitating taxane-induced arthralgia and myalgia are among the most common adverse reactions associated with taxanes, which has greatly influenced medical practitioners. Most of the mild and moderate analgesics were found to be less effective in the management of taxane induced pain. So we used flupirtine, a non-opioid analgesic, in the treatment of taxane-induced pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we analysed the baseline pain score and follow-u

The Efficacy of Medical Marijuana in the Treatment of Cancer-Related Pain.

Background: The opioid epidemic has spurred investigations for nonopioid options, yet limited research persists on medical marijuana's (MMJ) efficacy in managing cancer-related symptoms. Objective: We sought to characterize MMJ's role on symptomatic relief and opioid consumption in the oncologic population. Design: Retrospective chart review of MMJ-certified oncology patients was performed. Divided patients into MMJ use [MMJ(+)] versus no use [MMJ(-)], and Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS)-reported pain cohorts: "mild-moderate" versus "severe." Measurements: Medical records were review

Methadone for Cancer Pain in Pediatric End-of-Life Care.

BACKGROUND: The goal of adequate pain control becomes increasingly salient for children with cancer and their families as the patients approach the end of life. Methadone is one option that is particularly desirable in end-of-life care given its long duration of action and NMDA antagonism that may help in controlling pain refractory to conventional opioids. The purpose of this study was to describe a single institution's experience with methadone for the treatment of cancer pain in pediatric end-of-life care. METHODS: This retrospective, observational, single-center study included all patient…

Pain and Opioids in Cancer Care: Benefits, Risks, and Alternatives.

Pain remains common in the setting of malignancy, occurring as a consequence of cancer and its treatment. Several high-quality studies confirm that more than 50% of all patients with cancer experience moderate to severe pain. The prevalence of pain in cancer survivors is estimated to be 40%, while close to two-thirds of those with advanced disease live with pain. Progress has occurred in the management of cancer pain, yet undertreatment persists. Additionally, new challenges are threatening these advances. These challenges are numerous and include educational deficits, time restraints, and lim…

Antidepressants for chronic non-cancer pain in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common feature of childhood and adolescence around the world, and for many young people, that pain is chronic. The World Health Organization guidelines for pharmacological treatments for children's persisting pain acknowledge that pain in children is a major public health concern of high significance in most parts of the world. While in the past pain was largely dismissed and was frequently left untreated, views on children's pain have changed over time and relief of pain is now seen as important. We designed a suite of seven reviews on chronic non-cancer pain and cancer p…
