The impact of concomitant hepatitis C virus infection on liver and cardiovascular risks in patients with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients with hepatic steatosis are excluded from the diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The new name and diagnostic criteria of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) were proposed in 2020 to replace the original term NAFLD. The clinical outcome of MAFLD patients with concomitant chronic HCV infection requires further investigation. METHODS: The participants from Taiwan bio-bank cohort were included. MAFLD is defined as the presence of fatty liver, plus any of the following three conditions: overweight/obesity

Clinical Course and Outcome of Cardiovascular Manifestations in Children With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome Associated With SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Georgia.

A SARS-CoV-2 infection is usually characterized by a very mild clinical course in the pediatric population. However, children can be severely affected, and clinical manifestations may differ from adults, mainly in terms of post-COVID-19 infection complications already known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). As the name suggests, this condition involves many systems, including the cardiovascular system, clinical manifestations of which include myocarditis, coronary artery aneurysms, conduction abnormalities, and arrhythmias. This research aims to define the cardiac manif

Cardiovascular risk factors, ethnicity and infection stone are independent factors associated with reduced renal function in renal stone formers.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggested the link between nephrolithiasis and renal function impairment. We aimed to determine the renal function profile and potential factors associated with reduced renal function amongst renal stone formers in multi-ethnic Asians. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy between May 2015 and December 2019. Reduced renal function was defined as having estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Renal stone samples were collected and quantified using infrared spectroscopy. Potentia

CD28null pro-atherogenic CD4 T-cells explain the link between CMV infection and an increased risk of cardiovascular death.

An increased risk of cardiovascular death in Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-infected individuals remains unexplained, although it might partly result from the fact that CMV infection is closely associated with the accumulation of CD28null T-cells, in particular CD28null CD4 T-cells. These cells can directly damage endothelium and precipitate cardiovascular events. However, the current paradigm holds that the accumulation of CD28null T-cells is a normal consequence of aging, whereas the link between these T-cell populations and CMV infection is explained by the increased prevalence of this infection in

Strong Impact of Smoking on Multimorbidity and Cardiovascular Risk Among Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Individuals in Comparison With the General Population.

Background.  Although acquired immune deficiency syndrome-associated morbidity has diminished due to excellent viral control, multimorbidity may be increasing among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons compared with the general population. Methods.  We assessed the prevalence of comorbidities and multimorbidity in participants of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS) compared with the population-based CoLaus study and the primary care-based FIRE (Family Medicine ICPC-Research using Electronic Medical Records) records. The incidence of the respective endpoints were assessed among SHC

Predicting the risk of cardiovascular disease in HIV-infected patients: the data collection on adverse effects of anti-HIV drugs study.

AIMS: HIV-infected patients receiving combination antiretroviral therapy may experience metabolic complications, potentially increasing their risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Furthermore, exposures to some antiretroviral drugs seem to be independently associated with increased CVD risk. We aimed to develop cardiovascular risk-assessment models tailored to HIV-infected patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Prospective multinational cohort study. The data set included 22,625 HIV-infected patients from 20 countries in Europe and Australia who were free of CVD at entry into the Data collection on

Endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular risk in post-COVID-19 patients after 6- and 12-months SARS-CoV-2 infection.

INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 infection causes severe endothelial damage, an essential step for cardiovascular complications. Endothelial-colony forming cells (ECFCs) act as a biomarker of vascular damage but their role in SARS-CoV-2 remain unclear. The aim of this study was to assess whether the number of ECFCs and angiogenic biomarkers remained altered after 6 and 12-months post-infection and whether this imbalance correlated with the presence of long-COVID syndrome and other biological parameters measured. METHODS: Seventy-two patients were recruited at different time-points after overcoming CO

Evolution of myocardial oedema and fibrosis in HIV infected persons after the initiation of antiretroviral therapy: a prospective cardiovascular magnetic resonance study.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected persons on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been shown to have functionally and structurally altered ventricles and may be related to cardiovascular inflammation. Mounting evidence suggests that the myocardium of HIV infected individuals may be abnormal before ART is initiated and may represent subclinical HIV-associated cardiomyopathy (HIVAC). The influence of ART on subclinical HIVAC is not known. METHODS: Newly diagnosed, ART naïve persons with HIV infection were enrolled along with HIV uninfected, age- and sex-matched controls. All

Association of Syndemic Unhealthy Alcohol Use, Smoking, and Depressive Symptoms on Incident Cardiovascular Disease among Veterans With and Without HIV-Infection.

Unhealthy alcohol use, smoking, and depressive symptoms are risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Little is known about their co-occurrence - termed a syndemic, defined as the synergistic effect of two or more conditions-on CVD risk in people with HIV (PWH). We used data from 5621 CVD-free participants (51% PWH) in the Veteran's Aging Cohort Study-8, a prospective, observational study of veterans followed from 2002 to 2014 to assess the association between this syndemic and incident CVD by HIV status. Diagnostic codes identified cases of CVD (acute myocardial infarction, stroke, heart

Prevalence of hyperapolipoprotein B and associations with other cardiovascular risk factors among human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients in Pernambuco, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Hypertriglyceridemia associated with low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels and hypercholesterolemia is the most common metabolic disorder among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients using antiretroviral therapy. This atherogenic profile is associated with increased cardiovascular risk among these patients. Apolipoprotein B (apoB) is a better parameter than low-density lipoprotein (LDL) for evaluating lipids and cardiovascular risk among patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, but studies of apoB among HIV-infected patients are scarce. METHODS: A cross-sec

Use of apoptosis, oxidative stress and specific cardiovascular biomarkers to demonstrate myocardial damage in neonatal calves infected with different infectious agents.

In human medicine, there is evidence to suggest that myocarditis may be present in cases of diarrhea associated with various infectious agents. Nevertheless, the question of whether etiological agents cause myocardial damage in calves with diarrhea remains unanswered in the field of veterinary medicine. Based on this, we aimed to determine the presence of myocardial damage, cellular oxidative damage and apoptosis in calves with sepsis using high-sensitivity biomarkers. The study material consisted of 55 acute diarrheal calves and ten healthy controls. The diarrheic calf group consisted of rota
