Proteomic analysis of the eating quality of humped cattle beef from Rikaze cattle under various cooking methods.

This study used proteomic analysis to evaluate how four cooking methods impact the quality of beef from Rikaze humped cattle. Conventional boiling, high-pressure boiling, roasting and frying produced varying numbers of differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) in Longissimus dorsi and hind leg beef samples compared to the raw meat. Principal component analysis, hierarchical clustering and correlation analysis revealed 11 and 18 proteins significantly associated with meat tenderness and colour, respectively. Myosin heavy chain 7 (MYH7), myosin light chain 2 (MYL2) and myosin light chain 6B (MYL6B…

Correlation between Coleoptera abundance in cattle excrements and pesticide contamination of nature conservation areas grazed by cattle.

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between pesticide contamination at 16 locations in 14 Dutch nature conservation areas and the abundance of Coleoptera (among which dung beetles) in excrements of grazing cattle. A wide spectrum of pesticides was measured in soil, vegetation and excrements of cattle, obtained from all locations. In the fresh dung pats sampled for chemical analysis, beetle numbers were counted and beetle species were identified. In total, 31 different pesticides (including some metabolites) were detected: 14 in fresh excrements, 17 in soil and 20 in vegetatio…

Are dietary strategies to mitigate enteric methane emission equally effective across dairy cattle, beef cattle, and sheep?

The digestive physiology of ruminants is sufficiently different (e.g., with respect to mean retention time of digesta, digestibility of the feed offered, digestion, and fermentation characteristics) that caution is needed before extrapolating results from one type of ruminant to another. The objectives of the present study were (1) to provide an overview of some essential differences in rumen physiology between dairy cattle, beef cattle, and sheep that are related to methane (CH4) emission; and (2) to evaluate whether dietary strategies to mitigate CH4 emission with various modes of action are…

Efficacy of a 1% lambdacyhalothrin cattle Pour-on (Saber) against sucking and biting lice infesting beef cattle.

Four studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of a 1% lambdacyhalothrin pour-on (Saber Pour-on, Schering-Plough Animal Health) for control of sucking lice (Linognathus vituli, Haematopinus eurysternus, Solenopotes capillatus) and biting lice (Damalinia bovis) on beef cattle. Seventy-four mixed-breed cattle naturally infested with one or more species of lice at locations in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and North Dakota were included in the study. Pretreatment lice samples were taken and identified by genus with the exception that sucking lice were not identified by genus at the North …

Parafilaria bovicola (Tubangui 1934) in cattle: epizootiology-Vector studies and experimental transmission of Parafilaria bovicola to cattle.

Parafilaria bovicola (Tubangui 1934), a filarial nematode, causes cutaneous bleedings of live cattle and bruise-like lesions in the subcutaneous and IM surfaces of affected carcasses. To determine the vector(s) of this nematode under Swedish conditions, a field survey was conducted during the pasture season, May-September 1980. A total of 9,931 insects were collected from cattle and subsequently examined for infective 3rd stage Parafilaria larvae. From the fly species collected. Musca autumnalis (De Geer), Hydrotaea irritans (Fall), and Haematobia stimulans (Meig) were those most frequently id…

Comparative pharmacokinetics of diminazene in noninfected Boran (Bos indicus) cattle and Boran cattle infected with Trypanosoma congolense.

The pharmacokinetics of diminazene in five female Boran (Bos indicus) cattle before and then during acute and chronic phases of experimental infections with Trypanosoma congolense were investigated. A 7.0% (wt/vol) solution of diminazene aceturate (Berenil) was used in all three phases of the study and administered as a single intramuscular dose of 3.5 mg of diminazene base per kg of body weight. There were no significant differences between the values of pharmacokinetic parameters for the noninfected cattle and the values for cattle with a chronic T. congolense infection. However, the maximum…

The first report of quadricuspid aortic valve in cattle: clinical, anatomical and histological findings in three Holstein cattle.

Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) is a rare congenital heart condition in which the aortic valve is comprised of four, rather than three, sinuses and cusps. The clinical significance of QAV is unclear; it is diagnosed most frequently in humans and has not been reported in cattle. QAV was identified in three female Holstein cattle at necropsy for unrelated clinical conditions. Although heart murmurs were identified on clinical examination, no animal had heart failure. In all three cases the non-coronary cusp of the aortic valve was comprised of two separate cusps, resulting in a quadricuspid valv…

Forensic necropsies of cattle: a study of Danish cases from 2010 to 2021 and a guideline for forensic examination of cattle.

Forensic post-mortem examinations of animals are carried out on suspicion of violation of European and national legislation. In Denmark, and probably also in other countries with large-scale cattle production, cattle are regularly submitted for forensic assessment. Unfortunately, only few studies of forensic pathology in cattle are available. This paper presents a retrospective study of forensic case files on Danish cattle from January 2010 to December 2021. The case files were characterized with respect to types of lesion, age assessments of lesions and other parameters such as age and sex. A…

Experimental interspecies transmission studies of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies to cattle: comparison to bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle.

Prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) of animals include scrapie of sheep and goats; transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME); chronic wasting disease (CWD) of deer, elk and moose; and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) of cattle. The emergence of BSE and its spread to human beings in the form of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) resulted in interest in susceptibility of cattle to CWD, TME and scrapie. Experimental cross-species transmission of TSE agents provides valuable information for potential host ranges of known TSEs. Some interspecies transmission…

Isolation of mycoplasma species from the lower respiratory tract of healthy cattle and cattle with respiratory disease in Belgium.

Between 1997 and 2000, a total of 150 healthy cattle and 238 animals with respiratory disease were examined for six Mycoplasma species. Attempts were made to detect Mycoplasma canis, Mycoplasma dispar and Ureaplasma diversum in calves with recurrent disease, and all three of these species were identified in calves with recurrent disease and in healthy lungs. In healthy calves, 84 per cent of bronchoalveolar lavage fluids were mycoplasma free; when cultures were positive, Mycoplasma bovirhinis was the only species isolated. Mycoplasmas were isolated from 78 per cent of animals suffering recurre…

Standardised tests in mice and cattle for the detection of drug resistance in tsetse-transmitted trypanosomes of African domestic cattle.

Resistance to the drugs used to control African animal trypanosomosis is increasingly recognised as a constraint to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. The most commonly used tests for detection of trypanocidal drug resistance are tests using mice or ruminants, but these suffer from lack of standardisation and hence it may be difficult to compare the results of different investigators. Tests in mice are less expensive than tests in ruminants, but while tests in mice they may be useful as a general guide to resistance in a geographic area they should not be extrapolated to cattle on an …

Seroepidemiologic survey in Thailand of Coxiella burnetii infection in cattle and chickens and presence in ticks attached to dairy cattle.

A seroepidemiologic survey of Coxiella burnetii in cattle and chickens in Thailand was carried out using indirect fluorescent antibody test. Nine of the 130 serum samples from cattle were positive for antibodies against C. burnetii, with antibody titers ranging from 32 to 64. Only one of 113 serum samples from chickens was seropositive, with antibody titer of 16. No C. burnetii-specific DNA was detected using restriction fragment length polymorphism-nested PCR in spleens of cattle and chickens. However, coxiella DNA was detected in two of 102 engorged Rhipicephalus microplus ticks attached to …

Specific strains of Escherichia coli are pathogenic for the endometrium of cattle and cause pelvic inflammatory disease in cattle and mice.

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli are widespread in the environment and pathogenic strains cause diseases of mucosal surfaces including the female genital tract. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID; metritis) or endometritis affects approximately 40% of cattle after parturition. We tested the expectation that multiple genetically diverse E. coli from the environment opportunistically contaminate the uterine lumen after parturition to establish PID. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Distinct clonal groups of E. coli were identified by Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Multilocus sequenc…

Effect of the association of cattle and rusa deer (Cervus timorensis russa) on populations of cattle ticks (Boophilus microplus).

The wild population of rusa deer (Cervus timorensis russa) in New Caledonia (South Pacific) is nearly as large as the cattle population. The cattle tick is widespread and occurs all year round. Opinions are divided on the role of deer in the biological cycle of the tick: i) Do they maintain a sustainable tick population that is secondarily available for cattle? ii) Do they decrease the infestation of the environment by collecting larvae on the pasture, but preventing their development to the engorged female stage? or iii) Do they contribute to both situations? An experiment was conducted in th…

Ruminal metabolism of serotonin metabolites in cattle.

Metabolism of serotonin (5-HT) by gut microorganisms has been demonstrated in several species. However, information regarding 5-HT metabolism by rumen microbiota remains limited. The objective of this study was to evaluate ruminal metabolism of 5-HT-related metabolites and subsequent changes in circulating concentrations in bovines following oral administration of 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). In vitro incubation of rumen fluid with 5-HTP (100 µM), 5-HT (100 µM), or 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA; 100 µM) were assessed to evaluate the degradation and metabolization of these compounds.
