Eighty two patients with an endoscopically healed gastric ulcer, were treated for two years with either Caved-S tablets, two twice daily or cimetidine 400 mg at night. During the first year, 12% (four out of 34) of the Caved-S group and 10% (four out of 41) of the cimetidine group had an ulcer recurrence. By the end of the second year, the recurrence rate was 29% (nine out of 31) in the Caved-S group, and 25% (eight out of 32) for the cimetidine group. Ulcer relapse occurred frequently in patients with either a dyspeptic history of over six months (p less than 0.05), or a past history of a gas

Long-term structural health monitoring of underground heritage sites is challenging because of high humidity, limited accessibility, complex geological conditions, and aggressive saline environments. This study presents the implementation and long-term assessment of an integrated multi-sensor telemetric monitoring system deployed in two historically significant sites: Dragon's Den Cave beneath Wawel Castle and St. Kinga's Chapel in the Wieliczka Salt Mine. The system combines displacement sensors, strain measurements on rock anchors, and microclimate monitoring to assess structural behavior an

The Middle Stone Age of North Africa is tied to the emergence and evolution of early Homo sapiens and represents a pivotal period in the development of increasingly complex cultures. Within this framework, Aterian contexts provide some of the earliest evidence for technological and symbolic innovations, including the production of bone and ivory tools, pigment processing, and the use of perforated marine shells as personal ornaments. Lithic industries constitute a central component of this record and show significant variability in knapping methods and increased diversity of core-reduction str

Sand flies are important vectors of several pathogens of medical and veterinary significance, including Leishmania spp., Trypanosoma spp., Bartonella spp., and various arboviruses. Cave ecosystems provide suitable habitats for sand flies and often harbor large bat populations that serve as reservoirs for diverse microorganisms, potentially facilitating pathogen circulation within cave environments. The present study aimed to investigate the presence of sand fly-borne pathogens in cave-dwelling sand flies from three caves in Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. A total of 616 sand fly specim…

Thick-hard roof fracturing presents a significant challenge for disaster prevention in longwall mining. This study investigates the 15,311 south working face and develops a mechanical model to analyze energy release during both initial and cyclic roof fracturing, along with the associated disaster mechanisms. Results indicate that total energy release increases with mining depth, roof thickness, and tensile strength, but decreases with the thickness of the immediate roof. The energy released during initial main roof fracturing is more than twice that of cyclic fracturing. Based on site geology

Lava caves differ from karstic caves in their genesis and mineral composition. Subsurface microbiology of lava tube caves in Canary Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, is largely unknown. We have focused the investigation in a representative lava tube cave, Fuente de la Canaria Cave, in La Palma Island, Spain, which presents different types of speleothems and colored microbial mats. Four samples collected in this cave were studied using DNA next-generation sequencing and field emission scanning electron microscopy for bacterial identification, functional profiling, and morph…

OBJECTIVE: Over the years, Meckel's cave pathologies have been judged off-limits because of high rates of morbidity. Even though several studies have defined various surgical routes with tolerable morbidity and mortality rates, controversies related to the optimal avenue to treat different categories of Meckel's cave and cavernous sinus neoplasms persist. With unceasing energy to cultivate minimally invasive neurosurgical approaches, the endoscopic endonasal route has been tested, and the approach effectively performed, to provide a valid surgical window to these areas. In this dynamic and cha

Clear skeletal evidence of prehistoric tuberculosis (TB) is rare, especially in children. We describe and differentially diagnose the pathological changes displayed by a five-year-old child, Pollera 21 (PO21) dated to the Middle Neolithic of Liguria (Italy), or 5740±30 BP (Beta-409341; 6635-6453cal BP, 2σ, OxCal 4.2). PO21 shows a number of osteoarticular lesions, mainly of a lytic nature with very little bone proliferation: the vertebral column, the shoulder and pelvic girdles, and the ribcage are involved. Given the nature and pattern of the lesions, we propose a diagnosis of multifocal (or

To address the problems that the dust pollution law dominated by air distribution volume in coal mining faces is unclear, the key influencing factors of the wind resistance performance of spray are unknown, and the mechanism of environmental airflow on dust-fog coupling is not explicit, this study takes the 3217 working face of Shanxi Tiandi Wangpo Coal Mine as the research object. By combining numerical simulation with field and laboratory tests, numerical simulations were carried out on the airflow distribution and dust migration trajectory of the working face under different air distributio

Fifteen adults lived for 40 days in Lombrives Cave (France) without daylight, clocks, or external communication, providing a unique model of human temporal organization under complete environmental time isolation. After exclusions, 13 participants (7 women, 6 men) were analyzed. Rest-activity rhythms were continuously recorded by wrist actigraphy, core body temperature was measured using ingestible sensors, and salivary cortisol and melatonin were sampled at self-defined awakening and bedtime. During isolation, participants exhibited marked free-running behavior, completing 24-31 cycles (mean:

The extraction of extra-thick coal seams under hard, massive roofs using Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) can induce dynamic hazards, including large-area roof suspension, intense advanced abutment pressures, and extreme roadway deformation. Taking the 8401 working face of the Tongfa Dongzhouyao Coal Mine as the engineering background, this study systematically investigates the dynamic evolution of overlying strata and proposes a comprehensive stability control strategy. Two-dimensional non-linear numerical simulations using RS2(Phase 2) were conducted to evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution o

Human specimens from Border Cave thought to derive from its Middle Stone Age (MSA) deposits have been widely discussed in relation to Late Pleistocene evolution in southern Africa. Among the most prominent is the adult cranium BC 1. However, there are questions about the context and geochronological age of a number of these remains, including BC 1, which was recovered ex situ from a sediment dump created by miners digging for guano. The cranium has not been directly dated. Previous morphological analyses have clearly demonstrated its complete anatomical modernity, but its possible affinities t

The aim of this study was to determine the presence of the hyperparasitic fungus Arthrorhynchus nycteribiae and to analyze its spatio-temporal pattern in the two bat flies (Penicillidia conspicua and P. dufourii) parasitizing on bats. We collected 612 samples of bat flies from 400 bats in 20 caves in the Central Balkans. Hyperparasite was identified based on morphological and molecular analyses of rDNA genes (LSU and SSU). A. nycteribiae was reported for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and confirmed in Serbia. Of the 20 sites examined, we found A. nycteribiae at 11 sit…

BACKGROUND: Phenotypic plasticity is a specific area of interest that refers to the ability of an organism to alter its phenotype in response to environmental changes. Adaptive visual plasticity is a fascinating phenomenon observed in various animal species. Cave-dwelling organisms often exhibit visual degeneration, but non-obligate species like Oreolalax rhodostigmatus may retain adaptive plasticity. Currently, no laboratory simulations of light-induced conditions have been reported. This study investigated the morphological, histological, and molecular responses of O. rhodostigmatus tadpoles

Calcifying pseudoneoplasms of the neuraxis (CAPNON) are rare non-neoplastic calcified lesions that can occur throughout the entire neuraxis. Cranial nerves may be involved in skull base lesions. Surgical resection usually has a good prognosis, with only a few cases of recurrence reported in the relevant literature. We experienced a recurrent case of CAPNON in Meckel's cave extending to the cerebellopontine cistern with involvement of the trigeminal nerve after initial resection of the cystic part of the lesion. A 48-year-old man presented with a 4-year history of right-sided ptosis. Magnetic r

The Chishui River basin is the main production area of the sauce-flavor Baijiu. Due to the particularity of sauce-flavor Baijiu technology, a large site of workshops needs to be built for brewing and storage. Therefore, used the natural karst caves of Guizhou province to manufacture the sauce-flavor Baijiu, which has enriched the connotation of sauce-flavor Baijiu and saved valuable land resources. In this study, the fermentation grains in the seven stages during the Xiasha round of the cave-brewed sauce-flavor Baijiu (CBSB) were detected using a combination of physicochemical analysis, Headsp…

We report a case of cholesteatoma that caused left facial pain with facial numbness. The tumour was located in the left cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and Meckel's cave. A balloon was first placed into Meckel's cave, and then, under electrophysiological monitoring, the tumour within the CPA cistern was resected via the retrosigmoid approach. The balloon was inflated in Meckel's cave to push the tumour out of Meckel's cave, and then, the tumour was completely removed under endoscopy. The symptoms, including pain and numbness, subsided after surgery.
