Here, we discuss the pathophysiology of leukemia-associated gingival enlargement based on a case of acute myelomonocytic leukemia (AML-M4) with typical gingival enlargement. Uniquely, this patient was well enough to allow full periodontal examination and incisional gingival biopsy to be performed both before and after chemotherapy. The patient was a 39-year-old Japanese woman with AML-M4 showing gingival enlargement. Histological and immunohistochemical features of gingiva and bacterial counts in the periodontal pockets were examined before and after chemotherapy. The results were as follows:

Langerhans cell sarcoma is a rare neoplastic proliferation of Langerhans cells with a poor prognosis. We report FDG PET/CT findings of Langerhans cell sarcoma in the left forearm of a 77-year-old woman who presented with progressive enlargement of the left forearm mass for over 2 months. 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated a high FDG uptake by the mass along with several FDG-avid enlarged lymph nodes in the left arm and axilla. Pathology examination of the biopsied specimen from the left forearm mass led to a diagnosis of Langerhans cell sarcoma.

The mechanisms controlling neural stem cell proliferation are poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that the PTEN tumor suppressor plays an important role in regulating neural stem/progenitor cells in vivo and in vitro. Morphogenesis involves coordinated proliferation, differentiation and spatial distribution of cells. We show that lengthening of renal tubules is associated with mitotic orientation of cells along the tubule axis, demonstrating intrinsic planar cell polarization, and we demonstrate that mitotic orientations are significantly distorted in rodent polycystic kidney models. These results suggest that oriented cell division dictates the maintenance of constant tubule diameter during tubular lengthening and that defects in this process trigger renal tubular enlargement and cyst formation.

Hematologic and radiographic findings in 15 domestic cats inoculated with 25, 100, or 200 to 400 infective larvae of Dirofilaria immitis and in 5 uninoculated cats were compared. This report describes the development of hyperplasia of both the thymus and the peripheral T-cell system with advancing age in the Buffalo rat. Buffalo/Mna rats do not show age-related thymic involution, but rather develop thymic hyperplasia with advancing age. This thymic growth is expansile and there is no infiltration of the surrounding tissues.
