BACKGROUND: Plasterers perform a variety of duties including interior and exterior plastering of drywall, cement, stucco, and stone imitation; the preparation, installation, and repair of all interior and exterior insulation systems; and the fireproofing of steel beams and columns. Some of the current potential toxic exposures among plasterers include plaster of Paris, silica, fiberglass, talc, and 1,1,1-trichloroethylene; asbestos had been used by the plasterers in the past. Cement masons, on the other hand, are involved in concrete construction of buildings, bridges, curbs and gutters, sidew

Bioactive cements based on calcium phosphate chemistry have been developed to serve as bone substitute materials. One such commercial product, BoneSource, is a hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) used for small bone defects in the craniofacial complex. We have investigated the possibility that HAC could be used to support bone growth adjacent to dental implants placed in immediate tooth extraction sites. Variable levels of bone contact were noted up to 3 months postimplantation. Considerable loss of HAC occurred and was thought to be because of "washout" of the cement before complete cement setting. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of occupational exposure to noise, as well as its relationship with other factors that can induce hearing loss.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In January and February 1997, we conducted sonometry and dosimetry tests in a cement factory, as well as audiometric test in 85 cement workers, to identify sources of noise and evaluate the effect to noise exposure and other factors, of the prevalence of occupational hearing loss. Statistical analysis was conducted using measures of central tendency, bivariate analysis and polynominal regression models.
RESULTS: High noise level

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the retention of prefabricated parallel-sided dowels luted with resin cement in extracted teeth that were obturated with gutta percha using a eugenol sealer or a calcium hydroxide sealer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extracted maxillary incisor roots (N = 51) were instrumented to simulate conventional root canal therapy and divided into 3 groups (n = 17). One group was not obturated. Second and third groups were obturated with gutta percha using a eugenol-containing or calcium hydroxide-containing sealer. Gutta percha was removed using a heated plugger, and dowel space

We have studied the mechanical and pharmacokinetic characteristics of an industrially-prepared bone cement containing 3 g of vancomycin per 60 g cement. A low viscosity cement was selected, to increase contact between the antibiotic and the infected surfaces. Resistance of compression (95 mPa) was well above the required standard (70 mPa) and similar to that of other cements with or without gentamicin. The concentrations in blood, urine and bone were measured in mg/l and mg/kg, and compared to the break point (BP) of susceptibility tests, which must be obtained to achieve control of infection.

A cohort study was carried out in order to evaluate the cancer risk in the asbestos-cement industry workers. The cohort consisted of workers employed in four asbestos-cement plants. One of those plants was established in 1924, the other three in the 1960s and 1970s. Currently only two of these plants continue their production. The plants used mainly chrysotile asbestos as well as crocidolite and amosite. Amphibolite asbestos was used before the mid-nineteen eighties in production of pressure pipes utilising about 15% of the total quantity of asbestos used. The measurements of the asbestos fibr

To define the prevalence of cement dermatitis (allergic contact dermatitis-ACD-and irritant contact dermatitis-ICD), two retrospective studies have been carried out in Italy: the first one based on the analysis of dermatitis cases ascribable to cement as defined by INAIL (Italian Institute for Industrial Accidents Insurance) from 1984 to 1992; the second one by surveying cement dermatitis cases in workers in the building industry aged between 16 and 70 carried out by Istituto di Clinica Dermatologica dell'Università di Bari from 1988 to 1994. The survey on INAIL data showed that in the years t

A review and typical case history of a patient with skin burns caused by prolonged exposure to wet cement was presented. This case is similar to other reported cases in the length of exposure, prolonged healing time, and typical scar formation. Burns from prolonged exposure to wet cement can result in potentially devastating long-term sequelae. The dermatologic hazards of wet cement are well recognized; however, many patients have suffered cement burns from working in wet cement. Product education and proper protection appear to be the best preventive measures.

The adhesion of cements to root canal surfaces is a crucial factor for strengthening non-vital teeth--weakened due to extensive loss of tooth structure--by cemented posts. The aim of this study was to determine the tensile strength of a glass ionomer cement (Ketac-Cem) on root canal walls following pretreatment with conditioners. Upon cleaning and shaping, 56 straight root canals--divided into seven groups--were conditioned with one of the following solutions: NaOCl (1%) + EDTA (20%), H3PO4 (37%), HNO3 (2.5%), citric acid (6%), polyacrylic acid (10% and 20%) and NaCl (0.9%) as control. 6 men contracted occupational allergic contact dermatitis from unsaturated polyester (UP) cements. 4 of the men were employed in car repair painting and the remaining 2 in mold manufacturing. The exposure time to UP cements ranged from 6 to 32 years before onset of skin symptoms. All patients had eczema on their hands; in addition, 4 had skin symptoms on airborne areas, i.e., wrists, neck and face. All 6 patients developed allergic reactions when patch tested with UP resin at 0.5-10% in petrolatum (pet.). None of the tested patients reacted to auxiliary or cross-linking chemicals of the cement

The total chromium, nickel and cobalt concentrations of 8 Australian Portland cements ranged from 49 to 99 micrograms/g, 5 to 54 micrograms/g and < or = 1 to 13 micrograms/g, respectively. The water-soluble chromate concentrations of the cements ranged from 0.2 to 8.1 micrograms/g, and the sodium sulphate-extractable chromates from 1.4 to 9.7 micrograms/g. Results for water-soluble nickel (< or = 0.2 microgram/g) and cobalt (< or = 0.05 microgram/g) indicate that the metals are present only as water-insoluble compounds. The significance of the various data is considered from a dermatological p

The influence of a smear layer on the adhesion of sealer cements to dentin was assessed in recently extracted human anterior teeth. A total of 120 samples was tested, 40 per sealer; 20 each with and without the smear layer. The teeth were split longitudinally, and the internal surfaces were ground flat. One-half of each tooth was left with the smear layer intact, while the other half had the smear removed by washing for 3 min with 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% NaOCl. Evidence of the ability to remove the smear layer was verified by scanning electron microscopy. Using a specially designed jig, the

For some years, iron sulfate has been added to cement manufactured in the Scandinavian countries to prevent sensitization to and elicitation from chromate in cement. Allergic contact dermatitis from chromate is reported here in 3 workers with hand dermatitis and exposure to cement containing iron sulfate. Although iron sulfate had been added to the cement, high chromate concentrations were found in many samples of cement to which these workers were exposed.

Capping of 120 teeth in four monkeys was performed with Dycal or with a calcium-eugenol cement. The observation periods were 8 days or 90 days. The monkeys were killed, and the teeth were examined histologically. After 8 days, the pulp-tissue reactions were basically the same in the two groups. The tissue adjacent to the exposure site was characterized by varying amounts of necrotic tissue, inflammatory cells, and extravasated erythrocytes. Capping material and dentin chips were displaced into the pulp tissue. Particles from the capping materials were found in vessels, macrophages, and foreign

Cement dust has been found to be a source of selenium when included in the rations of sheep. In the work reported, rations including 3% by weight of cement dusts were fed to sheep for 165 days. The dust were taken from 3 collectors located at progressively greater distances from the coal-fired end of the kiln. Selenium levels and blood and tissues of the animals fed the cement dusts increased significantly above those of the control sheep. No tissue abnormalities were observed in animals receiving any of the treatment rations. The source of selenium is believed to derive from its content of fl
