Abnormalities of the lower urinary tract resulting from cesarean section are rare. We present a patient who developed urinary frequency, nocturia and acute pains in the late phase of micturition which we think was due to bladder distortion after repeat cesarean section. She was diagnosed cystographically and treated successfully by bladder flap release.

A Holter monitor was used to record ST segment changes during cesarean section in 170 consecutive healthy parturients starting 2 h before and ending 3 h after surgery. Authors did the antibiotic-prophylaxis with ceftriaxone in twenty cesarean sections (1 phial EV). Prophylaxis was sufficient in thirteen cases; on the other hand, in the remaining seven prophylaxis was followed by the three days therapy (1 phial EV). A good tolerance of the medicine was revealed in all cases. Moreover, it was tested a wide antimicrobial action with resolution of all the verified infections, except for one bacterial resistance case where some other antibiotic was used.

A three-year retrospective study was performed to assess morbidity associated with an attempted vaginal birth after cesarean section at a tertiary level military obstetric hospital. Indications for anaesthetics and the beta-mimetic fenoterol, which is used to inhibit uterine contraction, are of interest for the anaesthesiologist because these drugs can be life-threatening. For this reason a case is presented showing the cardiopulmonary side effects connected with anaesthesia for Cesarean section. Detailed knowledge of the pharmacodynamics of this tocolytic is imperative to prevent avoidable errors during administration of anaesthesia.

Tuboovarian sigmoid fistulae are rare complications of pelvic inflammatory disease. A 31-year-old woman had a severe post-cesarean-section infection that formed a tuboovarian abscess and ruptured into the sigmoid colon. The abscess and subsequent fistula led to persistent pain and purulent diarrhea. A salpingo-oophorectomy with closure of the colon was performed. The patient was still asymptomatic 20 months after the surgery.

The incidence of the main indications for cesarean sections in the last 20 years was analysed. Starting in 1981, we changed our attitude to cesarean sections and gradually initiated various means of decreasing our overall cesarean section rate. During the years 1973-79, 704732 births took place in Sweden and 63 075 cesarean sections (CS) were performed. Within the study period there were 20 maternal deaths associated with delivery or puerperium. Thirteen of these patients were delivered by CS and 7 by the vaginal route.
