Persistent cytomegalovirus infection: association with profound immunodeficiency and treatment with interferon.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) was repeatedly isolated from urine and saliva of a 20-month-old male child with recurrent episodes of pneumonia, high fever, rash, lymphadenopathy, oral ulceration, and neutropenia. Immunologic evaluation revealed decreased serum IgG and IgA, increased IgM, depressed T- and B-lymphocyte functions, and decreased natural killer (NK) activity for herpes simplex-type I virus-infected targets. NK activity was augmented following exposure of the patient's lymphocytes to interferon (IF) in vitro. The child was treated with interferon (four courses, dosage varying from 2 million

Residential district multi-hazard risk is associated with childhood undernutrition: evidence from Bangladesh.

Child undernutrition and natural disasters are major public health concerns in Bangladesh, but research into their relationship is lacking. This study assessed the association between residential district multi-hazard-risk and undernutrition among children aged less than 5 years (under-5) in Bangladesh. Data for 22,055 under-5 children were extracted from the 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey of Bangladesh. Multi-hazard risk was categorized as low (score<10), moderate (score 10-20), and high (score>20) using a combined score of four major hazards: tornado, cyclone, earthquake, and flood.

Examination of eating attitudes and symptoms of orthorexia nervosa in adolescents with and without celiac disease.

INTRODUCTION: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, leading to digestive issues, malabsorption, nutritional deficiencies, mental health effects, and long-term health risks. Previous studies have indicated that increased attention directed to food in CD treated with a gluten-free diet may increase the risk of eating disorders (ED). Although Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), defined as an obsession with healthy eating, is not yet considered an ED in an official diagnostic system, it is similar to ED in some of its features. ON in adolescents with CD has not been explored in t

[Protein metabolism and nutritional supplementation for enteral feeding in children with burns].

Basic pathomechanisms of protein metabolism dysfunction in children with burns have been reviewed in the paper. Indications and contraindications for enteral feeding have been outlined. Basic formulas for this type of feeding have been presented with respect to specific nutrient requirements, particularly protein requirement.

Pediatric nutrition assessment: identifying children at risk.

Nutrition services are important in the prevention of disabilities as well as in the treatment and/or habilitation of children with chronic illness. Level 1 nutrition care requires some basic knowledge of nutrition to screen for nutritional risk factors, knowledge of and access to referral systems for children identified to be at risk, and ability to use general nutrition education materials. Level 2 involves individualized nutrition assessment and intervention for problems such as anemia, chronic constipation, low- or high-calorie diets, feeding problems, and growth monitoring. Level 3 nutrit

Assessing nutritional status in children with chronic liver disease.

The metabolic changes compounded by anorexia associated with chronic liver disease adversely affect growth in children. In many cases, this requires the administration of artificial nutritional support. It is important in this group of patients that those who are becoming nutritionally depleted are identified quickly and in those receiving artificial nutritional support, the effectiveness is monitored. The current review is an examination of methods available to assess nutritional status. These include anthropometry, methods available in the laboratory and a selection of less commonly used met

Effect of graded nursing and feeding guidance based on water swallow test combined with enteral nutrition support in juvenile dermatomyositis children with swallowing dysfunction.

This study explored the effect of graded nursing and feeding guidance combined with enteral nutrition support in juvenile dermatomyositis children with swallowing dysfunction. Sixty-four juvenile dermatomyositis children with swallowing dysfunction admitted in Children's Hospital of Hebei Province from January 2022 to January 2023 were recruited as the study participants. They were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The control group accepted routine nursing. The experimental group received graded nursing care, feeding guidance, enteral nutrition support, and rout

Interlinkages between Climate Change and Food Systems: The Impact on Child Malnutrition-Narrative Review.

The pandemics of obesity, undernutrition, and climate change represent severe threats to child health. They co-occur; interact with each other to produce sequelae at biological, psychological, or social levels; and share common underlying drivers. In this paper, we review the key issues concerning child diet and nutritional status, focusing on the interactions with climate and food systems. Inadequate infant and young child feeding practices, food insecurity, poverty, and limited access to health services are the leading causes of malnutrition across generations. Food system industrialization

Nutritional support in malnourished paediatric patients.

An imbalance between a person's energy requirements and his or her dietary protein and caloric supply is the source of protein energy malnutrition (PEM), which compounds the problems of any underlying disease. Malnutrition may occur quite rapidly in critically ill patients, particularly those suffering from sepsis, setting up a vicious cycle with worsening of the PEM. This chapter examines the main consequences of PEM, the means whereby appropriate nutrition may be provided, and risks for severely malnourished paediatric patients in hospital. If the gastrointestinal tract can be used for refee

Nutritional status of children with dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Nutritional status was assessed for 100 patients with serologically confirmed dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), 125 patients with other infectious diseases who were admitted to Children's Hospital (Bangkok), and 184 healthy children. The assessment was done with use of the following parameters: weight for age, height for age, and circumference of the middle of the left arm. There were 13 patients classified as undernourished by weight for age, nine of whom were determined to have first-degree malnutrition; six of these had grade II severity of DHF and three had grade III DHF severity. Four patie

Effects of intestinal parasitic infections on nutritional status of primary children in Imo State Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: A cross-sectional study was conducted between the months of April to October 2015, to determine the effects of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) on nutritional status of school age children in Owerri and Orlu geographical zones, in Imo State, Nigeria. METHODS: Faecal samples were examined using Kato Katz method and formol-ether concentration techniques, while blood samples were examined using cyamethahaemoglobin method. Anthropometric indices were used as indicators of nutritional status, children whose Height-for-Age, Weight-for-Age and Weight-for-Height were <-2 standard
