The social misperception syndrome in children with learning disabilities: social causes versus neurological variables.

Family shortcomings or other intrinsic psychological deficits are frequently viewed as contributing factors to the social misperceptiveness frequently seen in children with learning disabilities. This article attempts to synthesize research defining the social problems of some children with learning disabilities. Particularly emphasized is the role of communication skills deficits. Breakthroughs in neurophysiology negate, to a large extent, traditional emphases on family dysfunction, school failure, or personality distrubances as primary causes of the social problems of some children with LD.

The application of naturalistic conversation training to speech production in children with speech disabilities.

The purpose of this experiment was to test the effectiveness of including speech production into naturalistic conversation training for 2 children with speech production disabilities. A multiple baseline design across behaviors (target phonemes) and across subjects (for the same phoneme) indicated that naturalistic conversation training resulted in improved spontaneous speech production. The implications of these findings are discussed relative to existing models of speech production training and other aspects of communication disorders.

Reversible autism and intellectual disability in children.

Studies on young children with reversible autism and intellectual disability are discussed. Present evidence suggests a clear cause in a minority of cases including early institutionalization, Landau and Kleffner syndrome, and other early onset epilepsies, intrauterine rubella, and blindness. The majority of cases have normal laboratory results and some have early onset Tourette syndrome. Preliminary data of a follow-up study of this last group are reported in 15 patients suggesting the possibility of two subgroups, one represented by early onset Tourette syndrome phenotype, characterized by a

Cecal volvulus in children with mental disability.

Two cases of cecal volvulus in children with mental disability are described. Case 1: a 3-year-old girl with trisomy 18 was admitted with abdominal pain and vomiting. She had received left lateral segmentectomy 6 months earlier because of hepatoblastoma. Release of the cecal volvulus followed by the fixation of the cecum and ascending colon to the right retroperitonium was performed. Case 2: a 15-month-old boy with Cornelia de Lange syndrome who had undergone a standard Nissen's fundoplication. On the sixth postoperative day, progressive abdominal distention developed. Abdominal color Doppler

Functional disability in children with hemophilic arthropathy.

Hemophilia is a coagulation disorder characterized by acute hemorrhages into the musculoskeletal system, leading eventually to arthropathy and disability. We investigated the functional loss, namely disability, in hemophiliacs. The clinical and radiological characteristics of joint involvement were also evaluated. There were 31 patients between the ages of 3 and 18 years and 65 involved joints. The knees were the most commonly affected joints followed by the elbows and ankles. There was a positive correlation between the radiological and clinical evaluation scores; however, the clinical evalua

Psychiatric disorders in children with intellectual disability.

We investigated psychiatric disorders in intellectually disabled children; the prevalence rate and types of psychiatric disorders, and the association of psychiatric disorders with sex, residence type, level of disability, and epilepsy were examined. The population comprised 155 intellectually disabled children. Medical information was obtained from case files, which indicated that a psychiatric disorder had previously been diagnosed for 11% of patients. A careful re-examination of the case files revealed a psychiatric disorder for 33%. The criteria of a psychiatric ICD-10 diagnosis were fulfi

Sleep patterns in reading disabled children.

Sleep patterns in reading disabled (n = 24) and normal control (n = 15) 8-10-year-old boys were compared to examine suggested relationships among sleep, maturational and cognitive processes. Sleep was recorded in the laboratory for four consecutive nights (two adaptation, two baseline) using standard polysomnography. Analyses revealed variations across nights for both groups reflecting adaptation to the sleep laboratory, but such effects were attenuated in reading disabled subjects. Group comparisons on baseline sleep measures (nights 3 and 4 collapsed) revealed that reading disabled children

Epilepsy in children: prevalence, disability, and handicap.

Little is known about the handicapping effect of epilepsy without other neurological deficits on an epileptic individual's life. The purpose of this study was to collect information on the occurrence of disabilities and handicaps in an unselected population sample of children, 4-15 years of age, and to compare the results with matched controls. The prevalence of epilepsy in the study population was 0.68% (143/21, 104). Time elapsed from last seizure was at least 1 year in 62.1% of the cases. There was marked neurologic comorbidity in the children with epilepsy; an accessory neurological defici

[Thyroid function in severely disabled children].

Thyroid function tests were studied in 105 severely disabled children. Fifty-four cases (53%) showed following abnormalities. Serum TSH concentration was increased in 2 cases. Both serum T4 and T3 levels were decreased in 18 cases (17%). Only the serum T4 level was decreased in 25 cases (24%). Only the serum T3 level was decreased in 10 cases (9.5%). Two patients showed primary hypothyroidism. Two patients (monozygotic twins) were suspected to have subclinical hypothalamic-pituitary hypothyroidism caused by septo-optic-dysplasia. Abnormal thyroid functions were caused by anticonvulsants in mos

Psychosocial problems in families of disabled children.

Psychosocial problems faced by parents and other family members were studied in 50 families with a physically disabled child (PD group), 50 with a mentally retarded child (MR group) and 50 with a healthy child (control group). A semi-structured questionnaire assisted interview and standardized scales were used to measure social burden, marital adjustment and maternal neuroticism. Families with disabled children perceived greater financial stress, frequent disruption of family routine and leisure, poor social interaction, and ill effects on their physical and mental health as compared to famili

Chronic sorrow in families of disabled children.

Among professionals who work with disabled children and their families, the need has arisen for better articulation of the concept of chronic sorrow, a bereavement process parents experience in response to life with a disabled child. This article presents information and concepts about the nature of chronic sorrow that permit clarification and understanding of the meaning of what is otherwise often confusing parent behavior. Implications for the professional in assisting the parent's movement through the bereavement process will be discussed.

Developmental classification of reading-disabled children.

The present study developed and used longitudinal cluster analysis, a multivariate classification technique, to classify a sample of 200 nonclinical normal and reading-disabled males based on their performances on a neuropsychological battery at kindergarten, second, and fifth grades. The resulting classification was examined against various internal and external validation criteria. Using a validation framework, five developmental subtypes of children, two normal and three deficit reader groups, were found. Three of these groups could best be described as partitions of a multivariate normal d

Coordination of precision grip in 2-6 years-old children with autism spectrum disorders compared to children developing typically and children with developmental disabilities.

Impaired motor coordination is prevalent in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and affects adaptive skills. Little is known about the development of motor patterns in young children with ASD between 2 and 6 years of age. The purpose of the current study was threefold: (1) to describe developmental correlates of motor coordination in children with ASD, (2) to identify the extent to which motor coordination deficits are unique to ASD by using a control group of children with other developmental disabilities (DD), and (3) to determine the association between motor coordination variable

Reading and Writing Skills in Children With Specific Learning Disabilities With and Without Developmental Coordination Disorder.

This pilot study is to investigate the influence of a developmental coordination disorder (DCD) comorbidity in a group of children with learning disability (LD). Reading and writing were assessed to investigate if the coexistence of a motor impairment can worsen writing quality, speed, and reading accuracy. A sample of 33 LD children (aged 7-11 years) was divided in two subgroups, on the base of their scores on the Movement Assessment Battery for Children: LD-only (n = 14) and LD with a comorbidity for DCD (LD-DCD, n = 19). No differences were found in handwriting speed, but significant differ

Common visual problems in children with disability.

Children with disability are at a substantially higher risk of visual impairment (VI) (10.5% compared with 0.16%) but also of ocular disorders of all types, including refractive errors and strabismus. The aetiology of VI in children with disability reflects that of the general population and includes cerebral VI, optic atrophy, as well as primary visual disorders such as retinal dystrophies and structural eye anomalies. VI and other potentially correctable ocular disorders may not be recognised without careful assessment and are frequently unidentified in children with complex needs. Although

Bisphosphonate treatment for children with disabling conditions.

Fractures are a frequent source of morbidity in children with disabling conditions. The assessment of bone density in this population is challenging, because densitometry is influenced by dynamic forces affecting the growing skeleton and may be further confounded by positioning difficulties and surgical hardware. First-line treatment for pediatric osteoporosis involves conservative measures, including optimizing the management of underlying conditions, maintaining appropriate calcium and vitamin D intake, encouraging weight-bearing physical activity, and monitoring measurements of bone mineral

Dental health of disabled children in Singapore.

The oral health status of the disabled has generally been poorer than the general population as the treatment and care afforded to them has been minimal. This paper examines the relationship of the various types of disabilities to dental health status. The dental status of a random sample of 322 disabled children aged between 6 and 18 years was assessed. The children had various disabilities: intellectual, hearing, visual, and musculo-skeletal. Most differences in the prevalence and severity of the dental conditions assessed among the children in the various disability groups were not signific

Syntactic development and verbal short-term memory of children with autism spectrum disorders having intellectual disabilities and children with down syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies suggest that syntactic development in children with intellectual disabilities (ID) is positively correlated with verbal short-term memory (VSTM). This study investigated the characteristics of syntactic development and their relationships of VSTM in children with ID based on type. METHODS: The participants were children with ID (N = 34), including 14 children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), 20 with Down syndrome (DS), with chronological ages from 8 years 10 months to 18 years 4 months and nonverbal mental ages (MA) of over 4 years, and typically dev
