Although rare, primary choroid plexitis can occur as an early presentation of a central nervous system (CNS) infection most commonly with cryptococcosis, tuberculosis, and nocardiosis. In the appropriate clinical setting, an enlarged, intensely enhancing choroid plexus should raise suspicion for choroid plexitis. It is important to recognize this entity early as aggressive diagnostic and therapeutic intervention may be necessary. We review the existing literature and present a case of infectious choroid plexitis in a patient with systemic nocardiosis; computed tomography and magnetic resonance…

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are rare adult tumours and metastatic disease is even less common, more typically associated with choroid plexus carcinoma. We present the case of a 32-year-old patient with multiple metastases arising along the length of the neuraxis 3 years after resection of an atypical fourth ventricular CPP. Metastatic deposits were found from the mid-brain to the lumbar cistern and the patient underwent repeat excision of the fourth ventricular tumour, partial resection of a cervico-thoracic deposit and craniospinal radiotherapy. Possible explanations for the rarity of at…

PURPOSE: To report and analyze the circumstances of uveal melanoma detection.
METHODS: The records of 143 consecutive patients diagnosed in the Ophthalmology Department of Gustave Roussy Institute between September 1994 and September 2001 were analyzed. The study included 66 females and 77 males, aged from 21 to 91 years (mean, 62.75 years).
RESULTS: The first symptom was decreased visual acuity in 37% of cases. In 34.9%, there was no functional sign and a systematic fundus exam provided the diagnosis. Of the 143 patients, 18.8% presented alteration of the visual field or scotoma, 9.9% compl

Smooth muscle tumor of the uveal tract is rare, and mostly located in the cilio-choroidal area. We report a unique case of posterior choroidal leiomyoma in a 27-yr-old man. Ophthalmoscopic examination disclosed an 11 mm-sized mass on the fundus two-disc diameters apart from the optic disc. With a suspicion of amelanotic melanoma, the globe was enucleated. The mass occupied the whole thickness of choroidal stroma beneath the pigmented retinal epithelium and composed of spindle cells arranged in intersecting fascicles. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated immunoreactivities of the tumor cell…

A newborn boy was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma after a systemic workup was prompted because of abnormal-appearing eyes. Radiological examination revealed mass lesions involving the liver, brain, eyes, and ribs. A liver biopsy was performed before death and results showed hepatoblastoma, an unusual solid tumor of childhood. At autopsy, hepatoblastoma was also found histopathologically in the irides and choroid of both eyes. No previous report of hepatoblastoma metastatic to the eye could be found in the medical literature. In addition, we believe this is the first report in a child of a solid …

Histoplasmosis of the choroid plexus has not previously been described. We report its occurrence, as well as its clinical, pathologic, and imaging characteristics in one case. Clinically, our patient's choroid plexus lesion produced encephalopathy and third nerve palsy. On imaging it appeared as a hemorrhage or calcification. Cerebrospinal fluid studies were consistent with a chronic meningeal process uncomplicated by hemorrhage. Stereotactic biopsy of the choroid plexus was required to establish the diagnosis of cerebral histoplasmosis. Pathologic examination also revealed prominent abnormal …

Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma is extremely rare. Here, a case that is most consistent with a botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma is described in a 4.5-year-old boy. The case is unique because it was preceded by a congenital Dandy-Walker malformation, choroid plexus hyperplasia and an enormous oversecretion of cerebrospinal fluid during infancy.

We sought to determine whether there is an association between choroid plexus cysts identified in the second-trimester fetus and trisomy 21. Over a 7-year period, fetuses scanned between 14 and 22 weeks were prospectively evaluated for the presence of choroid plexus cysts. Follow-up on fetuses with choroid plexus cysts was obtained by review of the medical records. Over the same time period, the scans and reports of all fetuses with trisomy 21 detected in our laboratory by mid-trimester amniocentesis were reviewed. The prevalence of choroid plexus cysts in fetuses with and without trisomy 21 w…

Management of a patient with a diagnosed choroid plexus cyst (CPC) is probably one of the most difficult of all prenatal diagnostic problems. Similarity between the risk of chromosomopathy due to the appearance of CPC only and the risk of fetal mortality due to amniocentesis (both being about 1/200) is such that an individual approach must be adopted in each case. The couple must be given a full explanation of all the details, which will enable them to finally decide whether a conservative attitude is appropriate or, on the contrary, if a specific diagnosis should be sought by amniocentesis.

Carcinoma of the choroid plexus (CCP) is a rare tumor of the central nervous system which occurs more frequently in patients under 3 years of age. We report 10 cases of CCP in children. There were 5 males and 5 females, aged 5 to 84 months at diagnosis (median 32 months). Eight CCP were located in the lateral ventricle and 2 in the fourth ventricle. All patients underwent initial surgery, with complete resection in 5 cases. Postoperative treatment included radiotherapy alone in 4 patients, chemotherapy alone in 4, both in 1 patient, and no further treatment in one patient. Six patients remain …

Current literature suggests that amniocentesis be performed on fetuses with simple choroid plexus cysts only when such cysts are 1.0 cm or greater in diameter and bilateral. At retrospective analysis of 3,769 patients, choroid plexus cysts were noted in 87 (2.3%), representing a rate three times greater than that of previous reports. Eight-three patients underwent amniocentesis. Six (7.2%) had abnormal karyotypes. Four patients had the commonly associated chromosomal abnormality trisomy 18. Two had karyotypes not usually associated with this problem: mosaic Turner syndrome and trisomy 21. Of t…

The case histories of two children of consanguineous parents with papillomas of the choroid plexus are presented. Although exogenic factors in the genesis of these neoplasms can not be excluded, autosomal recessive inheritance is proposed.

This is the first report of a fully documented case of an ossified mucin-producing benign choroid plexus tumor. This was a chance finding in a man who complained only of posttraumatic low back discomfort. The ossification of the tumor appears to have been therapeutic. Mucin production may be a defense mechanism.

Examinations of 87 patients with different positions of the eyeball in the orbit have revealed that if the eyeball sinks even slightly deeper in the orbit than normally, collapse of the cornea is observed during cataract extraction and ciliary-choroid detachment develops during the postoperative period. If the eyeball protrudes forward no corneal collapse or ciliary-choroid detachment occur.

Involvement of the choroid plexus by malignant lymphoma is rare. This case showed mass lesions at the choroid plexus in the first stage of systemic non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma. A 53-year-old female was admitted with headache, diplopia, and gait disturbance. The patient was alert but had left supraclavicular and axially lymph node swelling. Computed tomography scan revealed enhanced masses at the lateral and fourth ventricles. The lymph node biopsy disclosed non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphoma, diffuse large cell type. The immunological marker was the B-cell type. At surgery, there was highly…
