OBJECTIVE: To review the anatomy, physiology, clinical symptoms, long-term health effects, and treatment of the menopause and climacteric syndrome, with a special emphasis on features, such as incontinence, particularly relevant to geriatric medicine.
DATA SOURCES: English-language publications on menopause and the climacteric.
STUDY SELECTION: Articles and books containing recent information pertinent to the topics covered. Studies in human subjects were given priority, but primate studies that amplify physiologic concepts are included.

BACKGROUND: This study describes reproductive health, use of contraception, age at menopause, the prevalence of climacteric complaints, and hormone replacement therapy among Estonian women born in 1937-47.
METHODS: A sample of 800 Estonian women born in 1937-47 was composed at random from the Estonian population registry in 1997. A postal questionnaire was sent to all participants.

BACKGROUND: Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is an appropriate treatment for women with the climacteric syndrome. The estrogen component of MHT effectively alleviates climacteric symptoms but also stimulates the endometrium and thus may increase the risk of endometrial cancer (EC).

The authors analyze the findings of examinations of 350 patients of a climacteric and menopausal age, suffering from uterine fibromyomas. Special attention has been paid to patients with an asymptomatic course of fibromyoma during the menopause.
