[Biophysical effects of wetland vegetation changes on land surface temperature: Research progress and prospects.].

Wetland vegetation regulates surface energy balance through biophysical processes and modulates land surface temperature. However, a systematic understanding of such effect remains insufficient. We systematically reviewed the effects of wetland vegetation changes on land surface temperature from three perspectives: distribution patterns, vegetation coverage, and phenological dynamics. The regulation of key biophysical processes such as evapotranspiration, surface albedo, and turbulent exchange by wetland vegetation changes exhibits pronounced spatiotemporal heterogeneity, thereby leading to di

Operationalizing the Concept of Socio-environmental Tipping Points in River Basin Management.

The concept of socio-environmental tipping points (SETPs) is gaining interest as a means to describe nonlinear transformations in socio-environmental systems that are driven by both biophysical and social dynamics. These SETPs stem from multiple interacting factors that can rarely be traced to a single driver, leading to significant complexity and uncertainty. Structured frameworks can support the rigorous identification and assessment of SETPs, but little research exists that applies them in practice. This research utilizes a previously developed conceptual framework to identify prospective S

Updating Psychotherapy Work with the Future: Futures Thinking and the Futurizing Functions of Containment.

The acceleration of climate change and other global and political crises has created a state of "permacrisis," confronting patients with significant distress about and need to grapple with complex and threatening futures emerging from ecological and social upheaval. A core task of psychotherapy has always been imagining alternative paths and self-definitions to improve future outcomes, formalized in approaches such as "future-oriented therapy" or "future-directed therapy." Now the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms that support the process of thinking about potential futures are bett

Light heterogeneity shapes contrasting ecological responses to photovoltaic arrays in Tibetan alpine grasslands.

Alpine grassland ecosystems are highly sensitive to climatic fluctuations and anthropogenic disturbances. The construction and operation of photovoltaic (PV) power stations may alter environmental conditions, yet the relationships among PV-induced microenvironmental changes, vegetation responses, and soil processes remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated two PV power stations located in alpine meadow and alpine steppe settings, integrating microenvironmental monitoring, vegetation surveys, soil measurements, correlation analyses, and partial least squares path modeling to char

Effects of Scale on Modeling West Nile Virus Disease Risk.

Modeling vector-borne diseases is best conducted when heterogeneity among interacting biotic and abiotic processes is captured. However, the successful integration of these complex processes is difficult, hindered by a lack of understanding of how these relationships influence disease transmission across varying scales. West Nile virus (WNV) is the most important mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Vectored by Culex mosquitoes and maintained in the environment by avian hosts, the virus can spill over into humans and horses, sometimes causing severe neuroinvasive illness. Several model

Tropical Easterly Waves in the Tropical North Atlantic Basin.

Tropical easterly waves (TEWs) serve as precursors to most Atlantic tropical cyclones and strongly modulate the hydrological cycle over West Africa, the tropical Atlantic, and the Caribbean region. Despite significant advances, uncertainties remain regarding the processes governing TEW maintenance and intensification, the relationship with tropical cyclogenesis, and future projections of TEW activity under global warming. Progress on these fronts is constrained by persistent disparities in tracking methodologies, limited observational understanding of moisture-convection feedbacks across scale

Impact of tropical cyclones on the suspended sediment transport in the Bohai Sea since the 21st century.

Under the background of global climate warming, the impact of tropical cyclones (TCs) on mid-latitude semi-enclosed bays will be enhanced. A hydrodynamics-sediment model was used to study the impact of TCs on sediment transport in the Bohai Sea during the 21st century, further revealing the mechanism of TCs influence on sediment dynamic processes in semi-enclosed bays. During the 21st century, a total of 10 TCs have passed through the Bohai Sea, with the total suspended sediment flux (SSF) output from the Bohai Sea reaching 14.34 Mt. During TC events in the Bohai Sea, the Bohai Bay was the mai

A Developmental Perspective on Young Adult Romantic Relationships: Examining Family and Individual Factors in Adolescence.

The ability to develop and maintain healthy romantic relationships is a key developmental task in young adulthood. The present study investigated how adolescent interpersonal skills (assertiveness, positive engagement) and family processes (family climate, parenting practices) influence the development of young adult romantic relationship functioning. We evaluated cross-lag structural equation models with a sample of 974 early adolescents living in rural and semi-rural communities in Pennsylvania and Iowa, starting in sixth grade (mean age = 12.4, 62.1% female) and followed into young adulthoo

[Spatial patterns and key driving factors of soil dissolved organic matter in freshwater wetlands of eastern China.].

Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM), as a key component of the active organic carbon pool in wetland, is deeply involved in organic carbon migration, microbial transformation, and carbon release, and plays an important role in wetland carbon turnover and carbon pool stability. However, the spatial distribution and dominant controlling factors of wetland soil DOM at large geographic scales remain poorly understood. In this study, we selected 57 freshwater wetland sites spanning approximately 4000 km from north to south in eastern China. Using spectroscopic methods, we investigated the spatial d

Peer victimization, prison climate, resilience and psychological distress of incarcerated juvenile offenders in Ghana: A serial mediation examination.

Most Ghanaian research in the area of victimization among children has focused on the school setting. Little research has been done in an attempt to understand inmate-on-inmate victimization within the juvenile correctional facilities in Ghana. This study, therefore, investigated the extent to which peer victimization influences psychological distress among juvenile offenders in the Senior Correctional Center of Ghana. A cross-sectional design was used to purposively sample 115 juvenile offenders for the study. Following mediation analysis performed in PROCESS, the results revealed that prison

Associations between climatic parameters and the human salmonellosis in Yazd province, Iran.

Salmonella is one of the most common causes of foodborne disease outbreaks in developing countries. Climatic factors such as temperature, rainfall, and relative humidity can directly increase the growth and spread of these pathogens. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate long-term temporal trends and seasonal patterns of Salmonella infections as well as evaluating the effects of demographic and climatic factors on the infection incidence in Yazd province, Iran during 2012-2015. The incidence of Salmonella infections was highest among patients with the age group of ≤5 years and pe

Plague and climate: scales matter.

Plague is enzootic in wildlife populations of small mammals in central and eastern Asia, Africa, South and North America, and has been recognized recently as a reemerging threat to humans. Its causative agent Yersinia pestis relies on wild rodent hosts and flea vectors for its maintenance in nature. Climate influences all three components (i.e., bacteria, vectors, and hosts) of the plague system and is a likely factor to explain some of plague's variability from small and regional to large scales. Here, we review effects of climate variables on plague hosts and vectors from individual or popul

Urban heat island data by local weather types in Lisbon metropolitan area based on Copernicus climate variables dataset for European cities.

Here we provide Urban Heat Island (UHI) by local weather types (LWT) maps for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA). These maps were produced from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service climate variables dataset that contains hourly air temperature raster data for 100 European cities (2008-2017), namely Lisbon and part of its metropolitan area. Over 61000 maps (2008-2014) were extracted in NetCDF format and processed in geographic-information-systems (GIS). An urban mask was created from the recently updated Local Climate Zones (LCZ) classification for this area and a cell of the LCZ class "Low P

Patterns of nitrogen export from a seasonal freezing agricultural watershed during the thawing period.

The objectives of this study were to investigate water, ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) export processes during the thawing period in a watershed with heavy agricultural activities and to evaluate contributions of N (i.e., NO3--N and NH4+-N) from different source areas under different climate conditions. Experiments were conducted within the 75km2 agricultural Heidingzi watershed in northeast China. The thawing period was divided into four stages: early-melt, late-melt, rain-on-melt, and post-melt. Drainage regions (DRs) were separated into three types. The processes

Renewable energy encroachment in historical-natural landscape ensembles: a spatial observatory framework applied in central Greece.

The research advances the study of renewable energy impacts on land and landscape by introducing a spatially grounded Observatory Framework that operationalizes the encroachment as a cumulative and complex territorial process. To assess the level of degradation of mountainous landscapes, the proposed Framework designates Historical-Natural Landscape Ensembles (HNLEs), and integrates several geospatial datasets through a layered analytical approach. Several dimensions are monitored, including Energy Encroachment Intensity & Habitat Fragmentation, Land Cover & Ecosystem Dynamics, Protection Stat

Climate Shapes Elevational Gradients in Concentration, Composition, and Functional Diversity of Willow Metabolomes.

Plants produce broad spectra of metabolites comprising primary metabolites involved in core physiological processes and specialized metabolites mediating responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Understanding how these various components of the metabolome respond to different environmental pressures can help us to understand drivers of phytochemical diversity and its role in plant ecology and evolution. We investigated how climatic stress, soil resources, and herbivory influence various measures of phytochemical diversity in four willow species along an elevational gradient (950-2250 m a.s.l.),

From El Niño forecasts to proportionate public health action: a forecast-to-action framework for climate-related health risks.

El Niño creates an important opportunity for anticipatory public health action because its development can often be detected before many downstream hazards emerge. Yet predictability does not transfer uniformly from the large-scale El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal to regional climate anomalies and ultimately to health outcomes. This Perspective proposes a locally adaptable forecast-to-action framework that distinguishes three levels of predictability: ENSO prediction, regional and local climate prediction, and health-risk prediction. We argue that an El Niño forecast should initiate

The boiling frog effect: Global warming delays emotional impacts of air pollution in warmer climates.

Climate change, air pollution, and extreme weather interact in complex ways that impact emotional states of populations. These dynamics are crucial in effective health planning and risk profiling, however, remain poorly understood in real time contexts, hampering timely responses by governmental agencies. Here we conduct a long-term large-scale investigation of the synthetic and lagged effects of environmental stressors on expressed sentiment, as a proxy of emotional states and subjective wellbeing, derived from over 850 million geotagged tweets using natural language processing across the con

Benchmarking the geographic generalization of deep learning models for precipitation downscaling.

Earth System Models (ESM) are our main tool for projecting the impacts of climate change. However, running these models at sufficient resolution for local-scale risk-assessments is not computationally feasible. Deep learning-based super-resolution models offer a promising solution to downscale ESM outputs to higher resolutions by learning from data. Yet, due to regional variations in climatic processes, these models typically require retraining for each geographical area-demanding high-resolution observational data, which is unevenly available across the globe. This highlights the need to asse…
