Synthesis and characterization of [o-carboxy phenylazo] moiety of barbituric acid, thiobarbituric acid, thiouracil, citrazinic acid, and disodium chromotropate and their complexes derived from cobalt (II), nickel (II), and copper (II) salts were done. The stereochemistry and the mode of bonding of the complexes were achieved based on elemental analysis, NMR, UV-Vis, IR and ESR. The dissociation constants of the free azo ligands are evaluated by spectrophotometric methods.

The goal of our study was to develop an accurate and reliable method for determining trace cobalt concentrations in human serum. The method was used to determine cobalt in the sera of healthy persons and patients with orthopaedic implants containing cobalt - a possible source of systemic release of cobalt into the human body. Occupational exposure to hard metal dust, consisting of tungsten carbide (WC) and metallic cobalt particles (Co), is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, while no increased risk was observed in workers exposed to Co alone. Rocatec, Kevloc and Siloc bonding systems were used to bond Molloplast-B silicone elastomer to a metal alloy denture base material. The mechanical strength of the bonds was examined using tensile tests. Two groups of tests were performed, 30 samples after one day storage in water and 30 samples after 6 months in water at 37 degrees C. A single acute dose of carbon disulfide (CS2, 5 mmol/kg ip) caused hepatic damage in rats pretreated with phenobarbital. Rats pretreated with phenobarbital and cobaltous chloride (CoCl2, 250 mumol/kg sc) were protected against CS2 induced hepatotoxicity. When single acute doses of CS2 and CoCl2 were given at the same time, however, rats developed a much more severe hepatic lesion than that seen following CS2 alone. 57Co-bleomycin and 99mTc-sulfur colloid scans were performed in 13 southern African black patients with primary hepatocellular cancer (PHC) and 3 patients with other space-occupying hepatic lesions. Selective concentration of 57Co-bleomycin in the defect or defects seen on the 99mTc-sulfur colloid scan occurred in only 4 of the 13 (31%) patients with PHC.
