Proactive interference and the development of working memory.

Working memory (WM), the ability to maintain information in service to a task, is characterized by its limited capacity. Several influential models attribute this limitation in a large extent to proactive interference (PI), the phenomenon that previously encoded, now-irrelevant information competes with relevant information. Here, we look back at the adult PI literature, spanning over 60 years, as well as recent results linking the ability to cope with PI to WM capacity. In early development, WM capacity is even more limited, yet an accounting for the role of PI has been lacking. Our Focus Art

Meeting of Minds around Food Addiction: Insights from Addiction Medicine, Nutrition, Psychology, and Neurosciences.

This review, focused on food addiction (FA), considers opinions from specialists with different expertise in addiction medicine, nutrition, health psychology, and behavioral neurosciences. The concept of FA is a recurring issue in the clinical description of abnormal eating. Even though some tools have been developed to diagnose FA, such as the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) questionnaire, the FA concept is not recognized as an eating disorder (ED) so far and is even not mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel of Mental Disorders version 5 (DSM-5) or the International Classificati

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation over Right PMd Does Not Affect the Stability of Rhythmic Bimanual Finger Movements.

How the brain controls rhythmic asymmetric bimanual movements remains an enduring question in neuroscience. Prior research suggests that the right dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) is essential for maintaining asymmetric bimanual rhythmic finger-tapping patterns. However, such findings have not fully accounted for evidence showing that asymmetric movements impose greater cognitive control demands than symmetric ones. Thus, previously observed disruptions following transient disruption of right PMd may reflect impaired cognitive control rather than motor processes specific to asymmetry. To test this

Effects of aging on the mechanisms of dynamic integration between the default mode network and other brain networks: evidence based on fMRI data with natural stimulation.

Cognitive decline during aging affects daily life in older adults and is associated with altered functional connectivity (FC) between brain networks. However, the dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) alterations among brain networks in healthy older adults in response to natural stimuli are unclear. The present study included functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 217 healthy subjects from the Cambridge Centre for Aging and Neuroscience in the movie-watching state to analyze brain networks' dFNC and investigate the relationship between dynamic temporal metrics and cognition. A Comparative Perspective on the Cerebello-Cerebral System and Its Link to Cognition.

The longstanding idea that the cerebral cortex is the main neural correlate of human cognition can be elaborated by comparative analyses along the vertebrate phylogenetic tree that support the view that the cerebello-cerebral system is suited to support non-motor functions more generally. In humans, diverse accounts have illustrated cerebellar involvement in cognitive functions. Although the neocortex, and its transmodal association cortices such as the prefrontal cortex, have become disproportionately large over primate evolution specifically, human neocortical volume does not appear to be ex

Case study: A selective tactile naming deficit for letters and numbers due to interhemispheric disconnection.

The role of white matter pathways in cognition is a topic of active investigation that is vital to both the fields of clinical neurology and cognitive neuroscience. White matter pathways provide critical connectivity amongst numerous specialized brain regions thereby enabling higher level cognition. While the effects of dissections and lesions of the corpus callosum have been reported, it is less understood how unilateral focal white matter lesions may impact cognitive processes. Here, we report a unique case study in which a small left lateralized stroke in the white matter adjacent to the bo

Why bodies? Twelve reasons for including bodily expressions in affective neuroscience.

Why bodies? It is rather puzzling that given the massive interest in affective neuroscience in the last decade, it still seems to make sense to raise the question 'Why bodies' and to try to provide an answer to it, as is the goal of this article. There are now hundreds of articles on human emotion perception ranging from behavioural studies to brain imaging experiments. These experimental studies complement decades of reports on affective disorders in neurological patients and clinical studies of psychiatric populations. The most cursory glance at the literature on emotion in humans, now refer

The Relationship Between Pain Catastrophizing, Kinesiophobia, Central Sensitization, and Cognitive Function in Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain.

OBJECTIVES: Adverse pain behaviors and alterations in cognitive performance are shown to negatively impact the management of chronic low back pain (CLBP). Relationships between these variables are poorly recognized yet may impact the efficacy of interventions that target them. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between levels of pain catastrophizing (PC), kinesiophobia, central sensitization (CS), and cognitive performance in participants with CLBP. METHODS: A sample of 60 participants aged 18 to 65 with CLBP completed pain behavior measures (Pain Catastrophizing Scale [PCS], Ta

Cognitive outcomes following unilateral magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy for essential tremor: findings from two cohorts.

Magnetic resonance-guided, focused ultrasound thalamotomy is a neurosurgical treatment for refractory essential tremor. This study examined cognitive outcomes following unilateral magnetic resonance-guided, focused ultrasound thalamotomy, targeting the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus for essential tremor. The research was conducted at two sites: Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto, Canada, and West Virginia University School of Medicine Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute in West Virginia, USA. The study focused on cognitive changes at both the group and individual levels. Pat

Cerebellar Structure and Cognitive Ability in Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Dysconnectivity theories, combined with advances in fundamental cognitive neuroscience, have led to increased interest in characterizing cerebellar abnormalities in psychosis. Smaller cerebellar gray matter volume has been found in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. However, the course of these deficits across illness stage, specificity to schizophrenia (vs. psychosis more broadly), and relationship to clinical phenotypes, primarily cognitive impairment, remain unclear. METHODS: The Spatially Unbiased Infratentorial toolbox, a gold standard for analyzing human neuroimaging data of

Neurobiological Markers of Resilience to Depression Following Childhood Maltreatment: The Role of Neural Circuits Supporting the Cognitive Control of Emotion.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is strongly linked to negative mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety. Leveraging cognitive neuroscience to identify mechanisms that contribute to resilience in children with a history of maltreatment may provide viable intervention targets for the treatment or prevention of psychopathology. We present a conceptual model of a potential neurobiological mechanism of resilience to depression and anxiety following childhood adversity. Specifically, we argue that neural circuits underlying the cognitive control of emotion may promote resilience, whe

Cognitive impairment in a young marmoset reveals lateral ventriculomegaly and a mild hippocampal atrophy: a case report.

The number of studies that use the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) in various fields of neurosciences is increasing dramatically. In general, animals enter the study when their health status is considered satisfactory on the basis of classical clinical investigations. In behavioral studies, variations of score between individuals are frequently observed, some of them being considered as poor performers or outliers. Experimenters rarely consider the fact that it could be related to some brain anomaly. This raises the important issue of the reliability of such classical behavioral approache

Distributed associations among white matter hyperintensities and structural brain networks with fluid cognition in healthy aging.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are associated with age-related cognitive impairment and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. However, the manner by which WMHs contribute to cognitive impairment is unclear. Using a combination of predictive modeling and network neuroscience, we investigated the relationship between structural white matter connectivity and age, fluid cognition, and WMHs in 68 healthy adults (18-78 years). Consistent with previous work, WMHs were increased in older adults and exhibited a strong negative association with fluid cognition. Extending previous work, using pred

Functional Neural Architecture of Working Memory in Musicians: An ALE Meta-Analysis and Review.

Musical expertise is often associated with enhanced cognitive abilities, underpinned by neural mechanisms unique to musicians. Research has provided evidence of associations between musical training and functional aspects of cognition. However, the neural changes associated with musical expertise, particularly in relation to working memory, remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to examine differences in functional neural activity between musicians and non-musicians during working memory tasks. Meta-analytic connectiv

Neural and motor mechanisms of handwriting: from healthy aging to neurodegenerative disorders.

Handwriting is a complex cognitive and motor skill supported by a distributed brain network involving cortical, subcortical, and cerebellar regions responsible for planning, execution, and sensorimotor integration. Beyond its communicative role, handwriting provides biologically meaningful information about brain function and motor control, serving as a sensitive marker of both normal and pathological changes. Age-related alterations, such as reduced fine motor precision, impaired sensory feedback, and cognitive slowing, contribute to the progressive decline in handwriting fluency and legibili

Age-associated cortical similarity networks correlate with cell type-specific transcriptional signatures.

Human brain structure shows heterogeneous patterns of change across adults aging and is associated with cognition. However, the relationship between cortical structural changes during aging and gene transcription signatures remains unclear. Here, using structural magnetic resonance imaging data of two separate cohorts of healthy participants from the Cambridge Centre for Aging and Neuroscience (n = 454, 18-87 years) and Dallas Lifespan Brain Study (n = 304, 20-89 years) and a transcriptome dataset, we investigated the link between cortical morphometric similarity network and brain-wide gene tr

Neuroimaging in Vascular Cognitive Impairment and Dementia: A Systematic Review.

Cerebrovascular diseases are well established causes of cognitive impairment. Different etiologic entities, such as vascular dementia (VaD), vascular cognitive impairment, subcortical (ischemic) VaD, and vascular cognitive disorder, are included in the umbrella definition of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID). Because of the variability of VCID clinical presentation, there is no agreement on criteria defining the neuropathological threshold of this disorder. In fact, VCID is characterized by cerebral hemodynamic alteration which ranges from decreased cerebral blood flow to small

The sequencing process generated by the cerebellum crucially contributes to social interactions.

The capacity to understand another person's emotions, intentions, beliefs and personality traits, based on observed or communicated behaviors, is termed social cognition. During the last decade, social neuroscience has made great progress in understanding the neural correlates of social cognition. However, because the cerebellum is traditionally viewed as only involved in motor processing, the contribution of this major part of the brain in social processing has been largely ignored and its specific role in social cognition remains unclear. Nevertheless, recent meta-analyses have made its cruc

Neurogenic Orthostatic Hypotension: An Underrecognized Complication of Parkinson Disease.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) is a common source of disability but is an often untreated nonmotor symptom of Parkinson disease. The key manifestations of nOH include lightheadedness, dizziness, weakness, and fatigue when standing and engaging in activities in the upright position and result in falls, impaired activities of living, decreased quality of life, and short-term cognitive impairment. Early diagnosis and treatment of nOH are necessary to mitigate its adverse effects and reduce nOH-related symptom burden. CASE STUDY: The management of nOH is illustrated through

[Psychopathy: from "The Mask of Sanity" to social neurosciences].

Although psychopathy has traditionally been cited as a disorder of personality, confusion arises as the term is used interchangeably with the terms antisocial personality disorder of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, text revision (DSM-IV TR) or dissocial personality disorder, both of which are largely behaviorally based. This paper aims to provide a clinical and scientific overview of the literature on the topic of psychopathy, which examines this conundrum. This article begins with a wee bit of history about Hervey Cleckley's work, The Mask of Sanity,
