Impact of baseline neurocognitive functioning on outcomes following rehabilitation of executive function training for veterans with history of traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common among Veterans, and sequelae frequently include deficits in attention and executive function and problems with emotional regulation. Although rehabilitation has been shown to be effective, it is not clear how patient characteristics such as baseline cognitive status may impact response to rehabilitation in this sample. Explore the relationship between baseline neuropsychological status and postintervention functional outcomes in Veterans with chronic TBI. Thirty-three Veterans with chronic mild-severe TBI completed a neuropsychological evaluation, a funct

Neurocognitive deficits in depression: a systematic review of cognitive impairment in the acute and remitted state.

Previous research suggests a broad range of deficits in major depressive disorder. Our goal was to update the current assumptions and investigate the extent of cognitive impairment in depression in the acute and remitted state. A systematic review of the existing literature between 2009 and 2019 assessing the risk of bias within the included studies was performed. Of the 42 articles reviewed, an unclear risk of bias was shown overall. The risk of bias mainly concerned the sample selection, inadequate remedial measures, as well as the lack of blinding the assessors. In the acute phase, we found

Dyslexia Augusti: Does Suetonius describe a pattern of signs consistent with dyslexia?

It is generally agreed that Morgan was the first to reliably describe dyslexia with the case of Percy F. However, Suetonius, in "The lives of the twelve Caesars" describes the Emperor Augustus as having a range of language and literacy difficulties that could be consistent with this diagnosis. Using the framework of cognitive psychology, which rarely comments on the historical record, this article argues that Suetonius describes both signs and compensating strategies typical of an adult with remediated developmental dyslexia. If accepted, this analysis would locate a possible coherent descript

Does executive function capacity moderate the outcome of executive function training in children with ADHD?

Executive functioning (EF) training interventions aimed at ADHD-symptom reduction have limited results. However, EF training might only be effective for children with relatively poor EF capacity. This randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study examined whether pre-training EF capacity moderates the outcome of an EF-training intervention on measures of near transfer (EF performance) and far transfer (ADHD symptoms and parent-rated EF behavior) immediately after treatment and at 3-month follow-up. Sixty-one children with ADHD (aged 8-12) were randomized either to an EF-training condition w

Cognitive neuropsychology and its application to children.

Cognitive neuropsychology has been used successfully in the analysis of adult neuropsychological disorders in both verbal and nonverbal domains. When applied to children, it aims to construct models on the basis of functional lesions manifest within developing systems and provides a theoretical framework within which patterns of intact and deficient skills can be charted over time. These patterns constrain possible underlying models. In highlighting potential individual differences in the acquisition of skills and indicating intact skills within subjects, cognitive neuropsychology may also ena

Teaching Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences Using a Direct Mapping Approach for At-Risk Second Language Learners: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Reading interventions developed to teach grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) were evaluated among L2 at-risk readers. In the direct mapping of grapheme (DMG) condition, children's attention was explicitly drawn to the application of a graphemes taught on that day to shared reading of words in authentic text. In the control condition there was no such systematic daily linkage of the GPCs and texts. The two reading interventions were otherwise identical. Two hundred fifty-three Chinese Grade 1 and Grade 2 students were screened, and those who scored in the bottom 30% of an English word-readi

Measuring Participant Effort in a Depression Prevention Trial: Who Engages in Problem-Solving Therapy?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the acceptability of clinical interventions for depression prevention, identification of clinical characteristics associated with intervention engagement is needed. The purpose of this study is to describe levels and correlates of participant engagement in Problem Solving Therapy (PST) in adults 60 and older with subthreshold depression. METHODS: As part of a clinical trial to prevent depression among older adults with subthreshold depression, participants who were randomized to receive PST completed 6-8 sessions in which they learned skills to solve self-selected prob

Neurocognitive predictors of reading outcomes for children with reading disabilities.

This study reports on several specific neurocognitive process predictors of reading outcomes for a sample of 278 children with reading disabilities. Three categories of response (i.e., poor, average, and good) were formed via growth curve models of six reading outcomes. Two nested discriminant function analyses were conducted to evaluate the predictive capability of the following models: (a) an intervention and phonological processing model that included intervention group, phonological awareness, and rapid naming and (b) an additive cognitive neuropsychological model that included measures of

Numerical cognition across the lifespan: A selective review of key developmental stages and neural, cognitive, and affective underpinnings.

Numerical cognition constitutes a set of hierarchically related skills and abilities that develop-and may subsequently begin to decline-over developmental time. An innate "number sense" has long been argued to provide a foundation for the development of increasingly complex and applied numerical cognition, such as symbolic numerical reference, arithmetic, and financial literacy. However, evidence for a direct link between basic perceptual mechanisms that allow us to determine numerical magnitude (e.g., "how many" objects are in front of us and whether some of these are of a "greater" or "lesse

Neurocognitive enhancement therapy with work therapy in schizophrenia: 6-month follow-up of neuropsychological performance.

Cognitive deficits are a major determinant of social and occupational dysfunction in schizophrenia, and new treatments are needed that address these impairments. The current study determined whether neurocognitive enhancement therapy (NET) in combination with work therapy (WT) would show improvement in performance on neuropsychological tests that endured 6 months after completion of training. A total of 145 participants with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were randomly assigned to NET + WT or WT alone. NET included computer-based training on attention, memory, and executive function

Unmasking Huntington Disease: How a Neuropsychiatric Crisis Overcame Cultural Barriers to a Delayed Diagnosis.

Huntington disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor, cognitive, and psychiatric dysfunction. We report the case of a 53-year-old man who presented after a suicide attempt involving pesticide ingestion, following years of worsening choreiform movements, reported cognitive decline, and severe depression. Despite a strong multigenerational family history of similar symptoms, the condition was perceived as a familial "curse," leading to a prolonged reliance on traditional remedies and delayed engagement with biomedical healthcare services. Living with psychosis and cognitive impairment: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a major contributor to functional disability in individuals with psychosis. However, there is limited qualitative research on the everyday experience of cognitive impairments in psychosis. Addressing this gap could inform more person-centered care. This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of how cognitive impairments affect daily life among individuals living with psychosis. METHODS: A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed. Data was collected through semi-structured individual interviews with nine participants, aged 30 to 55 years, diagn

Effectiveness of interventions to improve occupational performance of people with cognitive impairments after stroke: an evidence-based review.

This evidence-based review was conducted to determine which interventions are effective in improving occupational performance after stroke. Forty-six articles met the inclusion criteria and were examined. Interventions for the following impairments were reviewed: general cognitive deficits, executive dysfunction, apraxia, memory loss, attention deficits, visual field deficits (included because of their close relationship with neglect), and unilateral neglect. Evidence is available from a variety of clinical trials to guide interventions regarding general cognition, apraxia, and neglect. The ev

Dyslexia: a new synergy between education and cognitive neuroscience.

Reading is essential in modern societies, but many children have dyslexia, a difficulty in learning to read. Dyslexia often arises from impaired phonological awareness, the auditory analysis of spoken language that relates the sounds of language to print. Behavioral remediation, especially at a young age, is effective for many, but not all, children. Neuroimaging in children with dyslexia has revealed reduced engagement of the left temporo-parietal cortex for phonological processing of print, altered white-matter connectivity, and functional plasticity associated with effective intervention. Brain-Cognition Associations in Older Patients With Remitted Major Depressive Disorder or Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Multivariate Analysis of Gray and White Matter Integrity.

BACKGROUND: Almost half of older patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) present with cognitive impairment, and one-third meet diagnostic criteria for mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, mechanisms linking MDD and MCI remain unclear. We investigated multivariate associations between brain structural alterations and cognition in 3 groups of older patients at risk for dementia, remitted MDD (rMDD), MCI, and rMDD+MCI, as well as cognitively healthy nondepressed control participants. METHODS: We analyzed magnetic resonance imaging data and cognitive domain scores in participants from

Eye Movements and Cognitive Functioning in Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: Network Analysis.

Background: Eye movement parameters are often used during cognitive functioning assessments of patients with psychotic spectrum disorders. It is interesting to compare these oculomotor parameters with cognitive functions, as assessed using psychometric cognitive tests. A network analysis is preferable for understanding complex systems; therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the multidimensional relationships that exist between oculomotor reactions and neurocognition in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Materials and Methods: A total of 134 subjects (93 inpatients with

Electroacupuncture Alleviates Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment Through Inhibiting miR-135a-5p/mTOR/NLRP3 Axis-mediated Autophagy.

Post-stroke cognitive impairment is a significant challenge with limited treatment options. Electroacupuncture (EA) has shown promise in improving cognitive function after stroke. Our study explores the underlying mechanism of EA in alleviating cognitive impairment through the inhibition of autophagy. We utilized a rat model of stroke induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) to evaluate the efficacy of EA. Treatment with EA was observed to markedly improve cognitive function and reduce inflammation in MCAO rats, as evidenced by decreased neurological deficit scores, shorter latencies

Evaluation of traumatic brain injury: brain potentials in diagnosis, function, and prognosis.

The focus of this review is an analysis of the use of event-related brain potential (ERP) abnormalities as indices of functional pathophysiology in survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI may be the most prevalent but least understood neurological disorder in both civilian and military populations. In the military, thousands of new brain injuries occur yearly; this lends considerable urgency to the use of highly sensitive ERP tools to illuminate brain changes and to address remediation issues. We review the processes thought to be indexed by the cognitive components of the ERP and outli
