BACKGROUND: Overproduction of collagen and its abnormal assembly are hallmarks of keloid scars. Type I/III collagen ratios are altered in keloids compared with normal skin. The relative proportion of collagen type I and type III in the aponeurosis of twenty-four patients with Dupuytren's disease was determined and compared with the aponeurosis of normal persons. The presence of considerable amounts of type III collagen was found in the Dupuytren's disease patients. The sera of the patients were screened for circulating anti-collagen antibodies using a sensitive radioimmunoassay. In seven out of the twenty-four patients low concentrations of these antibodies were found.

We describe two patients with cerebrovascular complications of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV. A 16-year-old girl with spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection and a 46-year-old woman with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and multiple aortic dissections were both deficient in collagen type III, analyzed in cultured skin fibroblasts.
