Acute diverticulitis of the cecum and ascending colon diagnosed by computed tomography.

Between June 1984 and August 1985, computed tomography (CT) was performed upon seven patients with diverticulitis of the cecum and ascending colon who presented with acute right lower quadrant symptoms of unknown origin. Three of these patients had undergone an appendectomy, while in the remaining four patients, the history and physical findings were atypical of acute appendicitis. CT findings suggestive of acute diverticulitis including thickening of the intestinal wall and pericolonic inflammation were present in all seven patients. In four patients, the colonic inflammation was limited to t

Preserving the ascending colon as an alternative surgical option in ulcerative colitis.

Six patients with ulcerative colitis were studied to assess the histologic appearance of the ascending colon which was preserved at the initial operation performed more than ten years previous. Inflammatory cells were increased in all patients, but ulceration was not present microscopically. Most patients had less than five bowel movements a day. Because of good long term survival of the mucosa, wider use of a surgical approach is proposed, based upon excising the colonic mucosa most prone to ulceration and metabolic derangement. The procedure entails subtotal colectomy, mucosectomy of the rec

[Inguinal herniation of a tubular duplication of the ascending colon (author's transl)].

A 6-year-old boy is reported who was operated upon with a pre-operative diagnosis of a recurrent right incarcerated inguinal hernia. As green-brown fluid appeared from the suspected hernial sac, a laparotomy was performed which showed a duplication of the ascending colon with a prolongation into the inguinal canal. The duplication and the relative intestinal segment were excised (right-sided) and because of the close relationship between the intestinal wall and the wall of the cyst, and the shared blood supply, an organ procedure was technically not possible.

Laparoscopic resection for a mesenteric lipoma of the ascending colon: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Lipomas are benign tumors that commonly occur in the arms, legs, and trunk of adults. Mesenteric lipomas are rare, particularly in the mesocolon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old puerperal woman developed abdominal pain 1 day after a Cesarean section. Computed tomography revealed a 10-cm, poorly enhanced, smoothly contoured mass dorsal to the ascending colon and ventral to the right kidney. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a homogeneous mass with clear borders and a thin peripheral capsule. A retroperitoneal sarcoma and well-differentiated liposarcoma were suspected. The mass w

Large lipoma of the ascending colon: a case report and review of literature.

Gastrointestinal lipomas are a rare benign non-epithelial neoplasms derived from mature adipocytes. The colon is the commonest organ involved in the entire digestive tract and has an incidence rate ~4.4% in autopsy series. Most of the colonic lipomas are asymptomatic and incidentally detected. Lipomas need to be distinguished from true neoplasia, because in most cases they do not need to be resected unless when they cause a clear symptom or they are large in size. Surgical rather than endoscopic resection is preferred for lipomas > 2 cm to avoid complications such as bleeding and perforation.

A variant source of arterial supply to the ascending, transverse and descending colon.

Anatomic variations involving arterial supply of the large intestines are of clinical significance. Variations range from the pattern of origin, branching and territorial supply. The colon, the part of the large intestine, usually receives its arterial blood supply from branches of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. However, anatomic variation in this vascular arrangement has been reported, with vascular anatomy of the right colon being described as complex and more variable compared with the left colon. During routine cadaveric dissection of the supracolic and infracolic viscera,

Metastasis to the appendix from adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon: A case report.

RATIONALE: Metastasis of cancer cells involves shedding from the primary tumor through various means to distant tissues and organs with continued growth and formation of new metastatic tumors of the same cancer type as the original tumor. The common sites for colon cancer metastases include the pelvis, retroperitoneal lymph nodes, liver, and lungs; Colon cancer metastases to the appendix are rare, as reported in this case. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: A 45-year-old man was admitted to our department with a 24-hour history of abdominal distension and incomplete obstruction. Colonoscopy show

A case of ascending colonic xanthoma presenting as a lateral spreading tumor.

Gastrointestinal xanthomas are characterized by foamy cytoplasmic cells containing lipid in lamina propria, and occur almost in the gastric mucosa. Colonic xanthomas have been described in rare case. All reported colonic xanthomas were located in rectosigmoid. Rectosigmoid xanthomas have tended to exhibit small polypoid lesion, on the contrary flat in stomach. We report a case of xanthoma on ascending colon presenting as a laterally spreading tumor resected by endoscopic mucosal resection method.
