Marginalised populations often have reduced access to infectious disease prevention interventions, and as a result of this and other socioeconomic factors, these populations are at a higher risk of disease. Here, we reviewed the literature of community-based interventions delivered at the individual level across multiple diseases, and focused on how to increase access to infectious disease interventions for ethnically, racially, and religiously marginalised populations. Most of the included studies only focused on a single disease and used quantitative descriptive methods. We noted the lack of

INTRODUCTION: A well-connected transportation network unites localities but also accelerates the transmission of infectious diseases. Subways-an important aspect of daily travel in big cities-are high-risk sites for the transmission of urban epidemics. Intensive research examining the transmission mechanisms of infectious diseases in subways is necessary to ascertain the risk of disease transmission encountered by commuters.
METHODS: In this study, we improve the susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) model and propose the susceptible-exposed-infected-asymptomatic infected (SEIA) model

A joint meeting of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, the Dominican Society of Pediatrics and the Dominican Society of Vaccinology was held in the Dominican Republic. This report highlights the most relevant issues that were presented and discussed about vaccine-preventable diseases, their epidemiology and impact in Latin American children, the need to move forward and expand national immunization programs and the economical and political obstacles to introduce 'new' vaccines. These include those against Streptococcus pneumoniae, rotavirus, hepatitis A, varicella, Nei

The African continent is disproportionately affected by infectious diseases. Malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and more "neglected" diseases including African trypanosomiasis, Buruli ulcer, leishmaniasis, onchocerciasis and trachoma continue to dramatically impact social and economic development on the continent. Health biotechnologies provide potential to develop effective strategies for the fight against the vicious circle of poverty and infections by helping in the development and improvement of novel affordable drugs, diagnostics and vaccines against these diseases. As the prospects of this

The national surveillance of French blood donors is performed by the Institut de Veille Sanitaire and the National Reference Center for Hepatitis B and C in transfusion in collaboration with the Etablissement Français du Sang and the Army blood center. The main objectives of this surveillance are to evaluate trends in prevalence and incidence rates of blood-borne infections in the blood donor population, to identify routes of contamination and to assess residual risk. This exhaustive surveillance also contributes to evaluate the blood donor selection and the impact of measures taken to prevent

In the paper the methods of prevention and control of social diseases (tuberculosis, trachoma, increased infantile and maternal mortality, alcoholism) in Poland of interwar period were presented. A considerable prevalence of these diseases was connected with social and economic conditions, in which broad classes of society had to live. The most effective methods in reducing the incidence of the diseases were prophylaxis and organization of free health care.

Infectious diseases and especially diarrheal diseases have been noted to have an adverse effect on the growth of underprivileged children in developing countries. Diarrheal diseases have been estimated to account for 10-80% of growth retardation in the first few years of life, with the magnitude of effect possibly modified by other factors, such as the adequacy and source of dietary intake, treatment and feeding practices during and following illness and the opportunity for catch-up growth after illness. In the only study in which infectious diseases and routine dietary intake have been evalua

This paper uses the techniques of time series analysis (autocorrelation and spectral analysis) to examine oscillatory secular trends in the incidence of infectious diseases and the impact of mass vaccination programmes on these well-documented phenomena. We focus on three common childhood diseases: pertussis and mumps (using published disease-incidence data for England and Wales) and measles (using data from England and Wales, Scotland, North America and France). Our analysis indicates highly statistically significant seasonal and longer-term cycles in disease incidence in the prevaccination e

In 2013, 65 diseases and conditions were nationally notifiable in Australia. States and territories reported a total of 224,434 notifications of communicable diseases to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, a decrease of 8% on the number of notifications in 2012. In 2013, the most frequently notified diseases were sexually transmissible infections (100,949 notifications, 45% of total notifications), vaccine preventable diseases (59,630 notifications, 26.6% of total notifications), and gastrointestinal diseases (32,536 notifications, 14.5% of total notifications). INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, between 12 and 20% of US adults were identified as having post-COVID-19 condition, commonly referred to as 'Long COVID'. These individuals maintained symptoms of COVID-19 for 3 months or longer following their illness but lacked an active infection. Using the Center for Disease Control's 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, our hypotheses were that adults who did not meet the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans for aerobic and strengthening activities, those not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and those with certain non-com

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the current situation on China Infectious Disease Automated-alert and Response System (CIDARS) in Guangdong province, China.
METHODS: Early-warning signals and response time were analyzed by using three approaches of CIDARS. Positive rates of early-warning signals and error early-warning rates prior and after the adjustment, were compared.
RESULTS: Totally, 114 585 early-warning signals appeared, with an average response time of 1.35 hours from April 21, 2008 to December 31, 2012. There were 12,394 early-warning signals in terms of fixed threshold method with a positive

Since 2004 there has been an increased recognition of the importance of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) as impediments to development. These diseases are caused by a variety of infectious agents - viruses, bacteria and parasites - which cause a diversity of clinical conditions throughout the tropics. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined seventeen of these conditions as core NTDs. The objectives for the control, elimination or eradication of these conditions have been defined in World Health Assembly resolutions whilst the strategies for the control or elimination of individual di

Epidemic diseases in the early Choson period were big problems to the people and society. However, the weapons to the epidemic diseases were very limited at that time. There were few drugs and well-trained practitioners for people. Most people could only depend on religious means and simple folklore medicine including inhalation of specific flavor. People tried to overcome or prevent the epidemics by praying, sorcery, ornaments, runaway and isolation. In most cases, the epidemic diseases came with or broke out from the famine, severe labour (especially in civil engineering) imposed by the ruli

Traditional public health measures for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have been to create laws that allow the society to investigate and treat assumed cases of STD. Such laws often include STD that in many communities are rare, but left out very common ones, e.g., genital chlamydial and human papillomavirus infection. However, such laws do not often stress the rights of infected persons to receive counseling, confidentiality, and help to notify the partner(s) if asked for. Although, free health care may be provided at venereal (STD) clinics, this is not true for many other types of clini
