The Future of Clinical Assessment in US Dental Education: Competency-Based or Entrustable Professional Activities?

In the late 1990s, US dental education embraced competency-based education (CBE), replacing time- and procedure-based requirements with an outcomes-oriented approach centered on demonstrated abilities and readiness for independent practice. Nearly three decades later, entrustable professional activities (EPAs) is emerging as an assessment framework. Do EPAs represent a new paradigm for dentistry, or are they an extension of assessment principles already embedded in competency-based dental education (CBDE)? This paper examines the similarities and differences between CBDE and entrustable profes

High pedagogical quality does not ensure evidence-based grounding in videos disseminated on social media by health professionals.

OBJECTIVE: Social media platforms have become influential environments for health education, patient counseling, and health communication. Short-form videos produced by health professionals are widely consumed and perceived as credible, yet whether their pedagogical quality coincides with evidence-based grounding remains unclear. This study evaluated the pedagogical quality and evidence-based grounding of short-form health education content produced by health professionals on social media and determined the extent to which these two dimensions are associated across professional groups. METHOD

Burnout among dental professionals in Pakistan: a post-COVID mixed-methods study of prevalence, predictors, and challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout among dental professionals is a significant mental health concern that affects learning, teaching, and patient care. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified existing stressors, yet little is known about how dental graduates, trainees, and faculty have adapted in the post-pandemic period, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study assessed the prevalence and predictors of burnout among dental professionals and explored their perceptions of post-COVID challenges and coping strategies. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted at the Sindh Institute of Oral Hea

Osteoporosis care in primary care settings: a national UK e-survey.

UNLABELLED: An electronic survey of 341 UK primary care staff identified barriers to evidence-based osteoporosis care including low confidence in clinical skills, the complex nature of decision-making, insufficient incentivisation and lack of systematic case finding. Opportunities to enhance osteoporosis care may include enhanced education and wider utilisation of the extended workforce. PURPOSE: To investigate the beliefs, confidence and practices of general practice staff in the care of people with, or at increased risk of, osteoporotic fractures and the association between professional rol

Factors associated with dental clinic use by clients in Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria, like many other countries, faced challenges in dental care provision during the COVID-19 pandemic, necessitating limited care to emergencies only. However, the impact of restricted access to dental services on oral health remains a concern, particularly with preventive maintenance care. This study aims to identify the factors associated with dental service utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic among patients attending dental clinics in Nigeria, and their sources of information about COVID-19. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 500 participants who had visit

Incidence of Maxillary Sinus Disorders in Dental Patients Undergoing Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was quickly adopted in dentistry settings due to its compact size, low cost, and minimal ionizing radiation dose when compared to medical computed tomography. CBCT generates three-dimensional (3D) images that are useful in a variety of oral and maxillofacial circumstances, including diagnosis and assessment of disease severity, treatment planning and delivery, and follow-up. A significant advantage of CBCT lies in its capability to recognize incidental findings. In the realm of dental CBCT imaging, incidental findings often involve the maxillary

Patient satisfaction in a restorative functions dental hygiene clinic.

In 2003, the Minnesota Dental Practice Act was modified to allow dental hygienists and assistants to place amalgam, composite, glass ionomer, and stainless steel crowns. A restorative functions course was added to the curriculum of a dental hygiene program at a state university in Minnesota to teach these skills. Student requirements for the course included clinical experiences on a minimum of twelve patients, as outlined by the Minnesota Board of Dentistry. The objectives of this study were to describe the characteristics and satisfaction levels of patients receiving care in the restorative f

Generating a consensus on an undergraduate curriculum for paediatric caries management: a protocol for a Delphi and nominal groups study.

BACKGROUND: Untreated dental caries is the most common condition to affect children globally, and significantly affects their oral health-related quality of life. Our understanding of caries and its management has progressed significantly over the past two decades, though a number of Dental Schools in the United Kingdom (UK) continue to teach traditional techniques, which no longer align with the evidence base. There is a clear need for an evidence-based curriculum for paediatric caries management for UK Dental Schools. This protocol details a study to generate consensus on what should be incl

Interrelationships between orthodontics and periodontics.

At the present time, periodontists have no evidence to indicate that orthodontic treatment in the child will either enhance or detract from the periodontal health of the patient or that it will increase or decrease the longevity of the teeth. Many periodontists believe that much orthodontic treatment is undertaken on an esthetic or empirical basis. Proper emphasis on plaque control procedures prior to initial banding, altered and reinforced during the entire period of orthodontic treatment, may well minimize the inflammatory lesion often found during therapy. Gingival, periodontal, and mucogin

Development and validation of an oral hygiene education game board (DENTOBOD) among adolescent students in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Many Nigerian adolescents lack knowledge about ideal oral hygiene practices, which has contributed to the high prevalence of poor oral health among them. Delivering oral hygiene education using innovative methods, such as board games associated with having fun while also learning, would help increase their understanding and adherence to these practices. A board game operates on the principle that knowledge is acquired and retained through repetition and interaction with peers. This paper highlights the development of a culturally tailored board game based on the Health Belief Model

Reimagining Dental Education Summit Working Group 4: Consensus Recommendations for Structural Interprofessional Education in Dental Training.

BACKGROUND: Despite decades of attention to interprofessional education (IPE) in dental education, many programs still operationalize IPE as episodic exposure rather than as a durable, assessable competence embedded in clinical workflows. This gap limits the translation of IPE into interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), particularly for medically complex patients and populations most affected by fragmented care. OBJECTIVE: To move IPE from ceremonial participation to structural integration across predoctoral dental education and clinical training environments, by developing consensu
