Finally, adolescents indicating recent problems obtaining condoms were about 70% more likely to report failure (AOR = 1.69; P = 0.1). Failure was not less common among those reporting a history of STD infection or those ever impregnating a partner.
CONCLUSION: Because adolescent males may commonly experience cond …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate potential associations among condom errors and gonorrhea and chlamydial infection among a population of sexually transmitted disease clinic patients.
METHODS: Audio computer-assisted self-interviewing was used to conduct a cross-sectional survey with 1124 participants. Biological specimens were collected during the evaluation visit.
RESULTS: A substantial proportion of participants reported condom-use errors with condom breakage statistically associated with gonorrhea infection among males at enrollment (AOR = 1.91; 95% CI: 123-2.96; P = .004).
CONCLUSION: Behavioral

To reduce the prevalence of reproductive health problems among adolescents, governmental and nongovernmental organizations in Cameroon are implementing youth-oriented reproductive health programs. To facilitate the design of effective programs to increase condom use, this study examines survey data on the determinants of having ever used condoms and on current condom use with regular and casual partners among unmarried young people in urban Cameroon. While most adolescents have tried condoms at least once, use remains inconsistent. Parental support, personal risk perception, and self-efficacy …

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are an important public health problem, due to their medical, social and economic repercussions. Therefore, more knowledge is needed about the sexual behaviour that promotes their spread, in order to improve control and prevention strategies. Our aim was to determine the frequency of male condom use associated with sexual behaviour factors, a history of and knowledge about STDs in a sample of the male population in Mexico City. During 1994 a cross-sectional epidemiological study was carried out, using multi-stage sampling with conglomerates, in 1377 men fro

The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change was examined for its applicability to contraceptive and condom use adoption and maintenance using N = 248 heterosexually active college-age men and women. The model posits that individuals do not go directly from old behaviors to new behaviors to new behaviors, but progress through a sequence of stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The stages of change offer a temporal dimension that provides information regarding when a particular shift in attitudes, intentions, and behavior may occur. The model also postu

Over the past two decades, the reported number of women and men who have had intercourse by age 18 has increased by approximately 20%. Concomitant increases occurred in the incidence of teen-age pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV. Increasing condom availability within schools has been proposed as one means of preventing the serious potential consequences of unprotected sexual intercourse. Although published surveys report 68% to 75% of adults have supported distributing condoms in schools, little is known about what students think about making condoms available…

Two hundred forty-eight adolescent girls responded to a list of 30 statements describing reasons for using and not using condoms. For 24 of the statements, most adolescents (> 70%) gave the same response regarding why they did or did not use condoms. Therefore, only the six remaining statements were used in further analyses. The relationship between the six statements and psychosexual history, condom use, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) history was examined. Those adolescent girls who had been sexually active longer were more likely to report lack of enjoyment as a reason that they did …

In an evaluation of the breakage rate of a thicker condom when used for anal intercourse, one hundred and eight gay men volunteered to use condoms which were 30% thicker than standard condoms. Of the 772 condoms used, 14 broke during anal sex, representing a breakage rate of 1.8%. When one subject was removed from the sample because of inappropriate use of the condom, the overall breakage rate was 1.6%. This compares favorably with the breakage rates reported for condom use during anal sex in other investigations, and is similar to the breakage rate for condom use during vaginal intercourse.

Descriptive baseline data at enrollment into a cohort of male factory workers who were tested for HIV serology and monitored for sero-conversion over time, were analysed for condom use. At recruitment, the 1,146 men were asked about their sexual behaviour, history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), condom use and circumstances under which condoms were used. HIV seroprevalence in the cohort was 18.2 pc. Self reported use of condoms was low, with only 5 pc of the men reporting using them all the time. Forty four pc reported that they had never used a condom, 11.5 pc tried a condom only onc…

This study proposed to develop and validate a scale for the college population that measures self-efficacy in using condoms. The Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale (CUSES) was derived from several sources and consisted of 28 items describing an individual's feelings of confidence about being able to purchase condoms, put them on and take them off, and negotiate their use with a new sexual partner. This scale was administered to a sample of 768 college students. It was found to possess adequate reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .91; test-retest correlation = .81) and correlated well with the Attitude…

The purposes of this study were to determine if use of the female condom (Reality) was traumatic to the vaginal mucosa and/or vulvar skin and to determine its effect on resident vaginal bacterial flora. Thirty subjects were randomly assigned to utilize the female condom or diaphragm during the study period. Initially and during 3 follow-up visits, each subject underwent colposcopic examination of the vagina, cervix, and vulva with photographic record, and qualitative fungal, aerobic and anaerobic cultures of the vagina. The two groups were compared with respect to the frequency of abnormal phy

The major television networks have considered airing condom advertisements. A Louis-Harris poll entitled "Attitudes About Television, Sex and Contraceptive Advertising" conducted in early 1987 concluded that at least 60% of adult Americans were in favor of such advertisements. To better understand the attitudes of adolescents and parents of adolescents in a private practice setting toward contraceptive advertisement on television, the present study was performed. Between March and June 1987, 108 parents of adolescents, 100 adolescent females, and 90 adolescent males filled out a questionnaire

Nine hundred fifty-five of 1,384 (69 per cent) gay and bisexual men enrolled in a prospective study of the natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection who reported engaging in anal intercourse in the past six months were surveyed about condom use practices for both insertive (IAI) and receptive anal intercourse (RAI). The following results were obtained: 23 per cent of the men reported that they always used condoms for IAI and 21 per cent for RAI; 32 per cent sometimes used condoms for IAI; 28 per cent sometimes used condoms for RAI; 45 per cent never used condoms for IAI; …

A 58-year-old man with acute leukemia had balanitis and penile ulceration due to Candida tropicalis after a condom catheter was used because of urinary incontinence. This case illustrates that condom catheters can be associated with serious complications in neutropenic patients and should be used only when absolutely necessary.
