[Etiology of infectious diseases of the outside of the eye].

This study emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis and therapy. Modern laboratory techniques were used to scan conjunctival swabs from 287 patients with 305 red eyes between 1.1. 1985 and 1.6. 1985. 17 patients (5.9%) showed Chlamydia infection. The main bacterial organism found was Staphylococcus, mostly of a resistant strain. Allergic conjunctivitis and typical viral infections were not considered in this study. As reported in the recent literature eye infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are increasing in number.

Congenital entropion in a litter of rabbits.

Conjunctivitis and blepharospasm were observed in a litter of four, 2-week-old New Zealand white rabbits. Corneal opacity and neovascularization of the cornea and entropion of the upper eyelids were observed when the rabbits were examined 10 weeks later. Conjunctival cultures of these rabbits yielded normal bacterial flora. Treatment with a steroid-antibiotic ophthalmic ointment did not alter the ocular abnormalities. Surgical correction of the entropion resulted in a complete regression of all clinical signs.

Conjuctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis associated with primary immunodeficiency diseases.

Nineteen patients with a variety of well-defined primary immunodeficiency diseases were examined for ocular abnormalities. Eight patients with low levels, or absence, of all the major serum immunoglobulins had conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis associated with bacterial infection. The remaining 11 patients, who had at least one immunoglobulin class present in normal concentration in the serum, showed no inflammatory ocular lesion. Absence of only IgA, the major tear immunoglobulin, did not predispose the eye to these lesions.

Common ocular infections. A prescriber's guide.

While most ocular infections are benign, others can be associated with devastating visual consequences. Most patients present with either ocular discharge, visual symptoms or a red or painful eye. The primary care physician is usually the first to evaluate these patients. We have separated ocular infections into 3 groups. Infections affecting the cornea and conjunctiva often present with eye pain and a red eye; noninfectious aetiologies can have a similar presentation. Infections inside the eye (endophthalmitis) often have devastating consequences. They usually occur following penetrating ocul

The giant fornix syndrome: an unrecognized cause of chronic, relapsing, grossly purulent conjunctivitis.

AIM: To describe a group of elderly patients presenting with chronic, relapsing, copiously purulent conjunctivitis, in which the condition was often perpetuated by the sequestration of a large number of bacteria on a protein coagulum lodged in the recesses of a large upper conjunctival fornix. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of a noncomparative case series, drawn from patients attending the lacrimal clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital. OUTCOME MEASURES: Characterization of this unrecognized syndrome and its response to treatment. RESULTS: Twelve patients (10 female) presented betwe

Azithromycin in DuraSite for the treatment of blepharitis.

Blepharitis is a common inflammatory disease of the eyelid. Posterior blepharitis affects the posterior lamella of the eyelid and involves inflammation of the meibomian glands, whereas anterior blepharitis affects the anterior lamella of the eyelid and the eyelashes; either version can be inflammatory or infectious in nature. Each of these conditions can incite or propagate the other; anterior blepharitis, if not treated, can lead to meibomian gland disease, and vice versa. Blepharitis is typically chronic, and can be associated with a variety of systemic diseases such as dermatitis, as well a

Topical fluoroquinolones for eye and ear.

Topical fluoroquinolones are now available for use in the eye and ear. Their broad spectrum of activity includes the common eye and ear pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. For the treatment of acute otitis externa, these agents are as effective as previously available otic preparations. For the treatment of otitis media with tympanic membrane perforation, topical fluoroquinolones are effective and safe. These preparations are approved for use in children, and lack of ototoxicity permits prolonged administration when necessary. Topical fluoroquinolones are not appropriat

Common eye disorders: six patients to treat, pitfalls to avoid.

Primary care physicians have an important role in diagnosing and treating eye disorders--including dacryocystitis, blepharitis, and conjunctivitis--and in determining when ophthalmologic referral is needed. Fundus examination for diagnosis of glaucoma and diabetic eye complications should be a part of the routine examination in all adults. Patients with HIV or AIDS should be carefully monitored for cytomegalovirus retinitis. Children should be tested for amblyopia. Orbital cellulitis can have serious complications and must be vigorously treated. Finally, careful use of ophthalmologic topical a

[Morphologic studies of the pathogenesis of ligneous conjunctivitis].

The cases of ligneous conjunctivitis published since 1964 are presented in a review of the literature. A total of 84 cases have been described. The predominance of this disease in women is lower than was previously thought. Ligneous conjunctivitis tends to occur more frequently in children. However, it is not a "disease of little girls". Two cases are described in the present paper, including pathomorphological studies. In both cases, neutrophilic granulocytes were studied by electron microscopy. The results are compared with a control case and with corresponding reports in the literature. The

Fluoroquinolones for the eye.

Two fluoroquinolone antibiotics, ciprofloxacin (Ciloxan-Alcon) and ofloxacin (Exocin-Allergan), are available in the UK as topical preparations for the eye. Ciprofloxacin eyedrops are licensed for the treatment of "corneal ulcers and superficial infections of the eye", and ofloxacin eyedrops for "external ocular infections (such as conjunctivitis and keratoconjunctivitis)". In the UK chloramphenicol is commonly recommended as the drug of first choice for the treatment of superficial bacterial eye infections. Do fluoroquinolone preparations offer any advantage over this or other established dru

Double zoonosis: Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome from sporotrichosis and follicular conjunctivitis from Moraxella osloensis, a zoonotic co-infection from our feline friend.

A 41-year-old woman developed chronic unilateral granulomatous conjunctivitis, ipsilateral lymphadenopathy, fever and malaise, diagnostic of Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, after contact with a sick pet cat. Tear cultures identified Sporothrix schenckii, confirmed by 18S ribosomal RNA PCR, with co-infection by Moraxella osloensis. Biopsy showed suppurative necrotising granulomatous inflammation. Oral itraconazole, topical amphotericin B and amikacin achieved remission. Although Bartonella henselae is the commonest cause of POGS, Sporothrix schenckii warrants consideration in cat-exposed pati

Bilateral Acute Iris Transillumination Syndrome after Topical Moxifloxacin/Dexamethasone Initially Misdiagnosed as Uveitis: Case Report.

Bilateral acute iris transillumination (BAIT) syndrome is a rare condition of unknown etiology, characterized by acute onset of pigment dispersion in the anterior chamber, depigmentation of the iris, and heavy pigment deposition in the anterior chamber angle, with bilateral involvement in most cases. We present a case of a 46-year-old healthy woman, who developed BAIT in both eyes, following the use of topical moxifloxacin/dexamethasone for bilateral bacterial conjunctivitis, followed by a nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in the left eye.

Microbiological spectrum and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of non-viral conjunctivitis over 16 years at a tertiary eye care center in Southern India.

PURPOSE: To determine the trends in the microbial spectrum and antibacterial susceptibility patterns of non-viral conjunctivitis over 16 years. METHODS: Microbiology data were reviewed from 2006-2021 for all the patients with clinically and culture-proven infectious conjunctivitis. Conjunctival swabs and/or conjunctival scrapings were collected for microbiological workup, and the demographic and antibiotic susceptibility data were extracted from the EMR (Electronic Medical Record). For statistical analysis, χ2-test was performed. RESULTS: Of the 1711 patients, 814 (47.57%) were culture posit

Weather, Air Pollution, and Seasonality: Predictors of Pathogen-Associated Conjunctivitis Outbreaks in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.

Conjunctivitis outbreaks can herald pandemics. However, their relationships with weather and air pollution factors are not well understood. Kathmandu in Nepal has defined wet-dry seasons and lies in a bowl-shaped valley that traps air pollutants with levels many-folds higher than recommended by World Health Organization (WHO). From 2021 to 2023, we collected conjunctival samples from patients with presumed infectious conjunctivitis in Kathmandu, Nepal, for pathogen identification. With publicly available weather and air quality databases, we assessed the relationship between environmental fact

Etiology and Outcomes of Acute Infectious Conjunctivitis in Children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes of conjunctivitis and whether clinical presentations and outcomes differ by pathogen. STUDY DESIGN: This multicenter, case-control study enrolled 390 children (194 cases, 196 controls) whose conjunctival samples were tested for bacterial and viral pathogens. Caregivers completed surveys tracking symptoms, antibiotic use, school attendance, and adverse events. The outcomes analyzed included the prevalence of microorganisms detected by polymerase chain reaction in cases vs controls, symptoms, rate of resolution by day 5, school/childcare attendance, and parent

[Viral Conjunctivitis: Findings, Therapy, and Prophylaxis].

Viral conjunctivitis is one of the most common acute eye diseases. The fall and winter months are known to be the main season for viral infections which is also reflected in the ophthalmological outpatient clinics. Viral conjunctivitis is often accompanied by symptoms of the upper and lower respiratory tract, fever, chills, arthralgia or skin lesions. The spectrum of pathogens comprises DNA viruses such as Adeno-, Herpes simplex and Molluscum contagiosum as well as RNA viruses. Symptoms caused by pandemic pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and mpox viruses can also cause ocular manifestation. Viral

Studies in the epidemiology and control of seasonal conjunctivitis and trachoma in southern Morocco.

It has been noted in many parts of the world that bacterial conjunctivitis is a major cause of total or partial loss of vision. In addition, trachoma is aggravated if there are associated bacterial infections and these lead to more frequent corneal complications. In the trials described the seasonal variation of bacterial infections was studied in addition to trachoma in 3 pilot sectors in southern Morocco. The frequency of complications and late sequelae from these infections in the whole population of these sectors was also studied. In one of the sectors 3 different methods of limiting the reg
