Collaborative study for validation of a serological potency assay for rabies vaccine (inactivated) for veterinary use.

European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) monograph 0451 on Rabies vaccine (inactivated) for veterinary use describes an in vivo batch potency test that is based on the NIH test. This assay uses a large number of mice and results in a significant degree of suffering. In the interest of replacement, reduction and refinement of animal tests (3R) a serological potency assay for Rabies vaccine (inactivated) for animal use, developed and validated at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, has been assessed in a collaborative study organised by the EDQM (European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare).

Bonus-based mercenary punishment promotes cooperation in public goods games.

Various regions often adopt punish strategies to solve traffic congestion problems. Punishing defectors is an effective strategy to solve the first-order free-rider problem in a public goods game. But this behavior is costly because the punisher is often also involved in the original joint venture and therefore vulnerable, which jeopardizes the effectiveness of this incentive. As an option, we could hire special players whose sole duty would be to monitor the population and punish defectors. The fines collected by various regions will also be used to subsidize the construction of public transp

The Quality of Interactive Behaviors in the Context of Prematurity: Fathers, Mothers, Daughters, and Sons.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the quality of interaction between preterm-born preschoolers and their mothers and fathers, focusing on the role of child and parental sex. METHODS: Participants included 88 preterm-born children (<37 wk gestational age) and 44 full-term-born children (≥37 wk gestational age) aged 3 1/2 years and their parents. Mother-child and father-child dyads were observed during a structured interactive task. Children's cooperation-compliance and negativity-hostility behaviors were coded using the Coding System for Mother-Child Interactions, and parents' sensitive behavior

How to improve users' intentions to continued usage of shared bicycles: A mixed method approach.

Sharing the use of a bicycle in China has changed people's daily travel modes. Existing studies mainly explored the factors affecting individuals' initial intentions to start using a shared bicycle, but few looked at the likelihood that a user would continue using one. Based on a post-acceptance model of information system (IS) continuance, this investigation proposed a research model to investigate factors influencing riders' intentions to continued usage of shared bikes. Analysis involved structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on data from 3

Differences in sexual identity, risk practices, and sex partners between bisexual men and other men among a low-income drug-using sample.

Men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) represent an important target population for understanding the spread of HIV because of the inherent bridging aspect of their sexual behavior. Despite their potential to spread HIV between gender groups, relatively little recent data have been reported about this population as a subgroup distinct from men who have sex with men only. This paper analyzes data from the Chicago site of Sexual Acquisition and Transmission of HIV Cooperative Agreement Program to characterize 343 MSMW in terms of their demographics, drug use, sexual risk behavior, sexual ide

Nest-founding paper wasps aggregate in "social leks" and decrease aggression during partner selection.

Many animals live in cooperative social groups. The success of social animals is thought to be influenced by both an animal's own characteristics and by the characteristics of its social partners. As a result, some social animals may devote substantial time and energy to assessing potential partners. Here, we study the process of social group formation in Polistes fuscatus paper wasps. Prior to founding nests, wasps engage in extended social partner sampling where they synchronously "shop" for co-foundresses. We quantify wasp behavior during partner sampling using day censuses and recording ag

The paradox of cooperation benefits.

It seems obvious that as the benefits of cooperation increase, the share of cooperators in the population should also increase. It is well known that positive assortment between cooperative types, for instance in spatially structured populations, provide better conditions for the evolution of cooperation than complete mixing. This study demonstrates that, assuming positive assortment, under most conditions higher cooperation benefits also increase the share of cooperators. On the other hand, under a specified range of payoff values, when at least two payoff parameters are modified, the reverse

Evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games with common resource dynamics.

Investment in a common resource shared by all players is difficult to evolve despite higher returns because a non-investor (free-rider) always receives more than an investor (altruist). This situation is referred to as the Tragedy of the Commons and is often observed in various biological systems including environmental problems of human society. Punishment and reputation are effective mechanisms but require cooperator's ability to identify free-riders. Volunteering can work in anonymous public goods games but this requires voluntary participation, which is not always the case. Here, we show t

What makes players stay: Using real gameplay data to explore players' game loyalty to E-sports MOBA games.

In recent years, esports and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games have gained substantial global popularity, yet the mechanisms underlying player loyalty in the MOBA context remain insufficiently integrated within a unified theoretical framework. Drawing on the Stimulus-Organism-Response framework, this study proposes a three-stage model in which game cooperativeness and competitiveness serve as stimuli, self-efficacy and immersion as organism variables, and game loyalty as the response. Using DOTA 2 as a representative MOBA game, we conducted two studies to test the proposed model. St

[Adolescent with non-suicidal self-harm in a psychosocial adversity environment].

Non-suicidal harmful behaviors pose a health problem of increasing importance, with a prevalence in community samples of adolescents of 15-20 %. Self-harm can have adverse meaning, qualifying in intrapersonal or interpersonal; they are a risk and evolutionary factor, with an age of onset in early adolescence. We present the case of a 12-year-old adolescent with psychosocial risk factors, who went to the consultation for self-cuts in arms and legs, made with a razor, detected in the school. It was enhanced her self-steem an guided in regulation of emotions with multidisciplinary intervention (e

Stable polymorphism of cooperators and punishers in a public goods game.

The role of punishment in the maintenance of cooperation has been emphasized recently. However, the maintenance of punishment is not an obvious consequence because punishment itself is also a public good; it is costly to perform and hence vulnerable to exploitation. For example, cooperative punishers, who help others and punish free riders, are disadvantageous in competition against pure cooperators, who cooperate but do not punish free riders. In addition, pure punishers, who do not help others but punish free riders, have been considered to be selfish in conventional models, because they do

Development of Feeding Cues During Infancy and Toddlerhood.

PURPOSE: To enhance responsive feeding, this study aimed to characterize the development of feeding cues during infancy and toddlerhood. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed on a dataset of first-time, low-income African American mother-infant pairs assessed at infant age 3, 6, 9, 12, and 18 months. A subsample with the 15 highest, middle, and lowest infant body mass index (BMI) Z-scores at 18 months was selected (n = 45). Using video-recorded home feedings, early, active, and late receptiveness and fullness cues were assessed using the Responsiveness to Child Feeding

Parent-adolescent collaboration: an interpersonal model for understanding optimal interactions.

Current parent-adolescent behavioral interaction research highlights the importance of three elements of behavior in defining adaptive interactions: autonomy, control, and warmth vs. hostility. However, this research has largely addressed the developmental needs and psychosocial outcomes of adolescents, as opposed to parents, with a focus on how parent and adolescent behaviors influence adolescent adaptation. This paper utilizes both adolescent and mid-life developmental research, as well as parent-adolescent interaction research, to introduce a model for conceptualizing parent-adolescent inte

The Interaction of Vasopressin with Hormones of the Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis: The Significance for Therapeutic Strategies in Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases.

A large body of evidence indicates that vasopressin (AVP) and steroid hormones are frequently secreted together and closely cooperate in the regulation of blood pressure, metabolism, water-electrolyte balance, and behavior, thereby securing survival and the comfort of life. Vasopressin cooperates with hormones of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) at several levels through regulation of the release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and multiple steroid hormones, as well as through interactions with steroids in the target organs. These inter

Sex differences on the response to others' gains and losses under cooperation and competition.

Although previous studies have shown that task performance is affected by others' presence and (the consequences of) others' actions, it is unclear how task performance varies in different social situations and the role that sex plays in it. In the present study, we investigated sex differences in the evaluation processing of another person's outcomes in both cooperative and competitive contexts. We recorded the event-related potentials (ERPs) of 72 normal adults who played a gambling task with a partner or against an opponent. The behavioral results indicate that males take longer to make dec

Cognitive Adaptations for n-person Exchange: The Evolutionary Roots of Organizational Behavior.

Organizations are composed of stable, predominantly cooperative interactions or n-person exchanges. Humans have been engaging in n-person exchanges for a great enough period of evolutionary time that we appear to have evolved a distinct constellation of species-typical mechanisms specialized to solve the adaptive problems posed by this form of social interaction. These mechanisms appear to have been evolutionarily elaborated out of the cognitive infrastructure that initially evolved for dyadic exchange. Key adaptive problems that these mechanisms are designed to solve include coordination amon
