BACKGROUND: Cleaner-fish (wrasse, Labridae) are increasingly deployed within the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) industry as a biological control against sea-lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer). Two tank-based trials were performed to test the effect of farmed ballan wrasse (Labrus bergylta Ascanius) body mass and supplementary feeding on the delousing of Atlantic salmon post-smolts with an initial infection level of ∼12 lice salmon(-1) and a ∼5% wrasse:salmon ratio.
RESULTS: Sea-louse levels below 0.5 lice salmon(-1) were obtained within 84 h, and preferential preying upon larger motile s

We have evaluated Photorhabdus insect-related protein (Pir) from Photorhabdus asymbiotica against dengue vectors. PirAB shows larvicidal activity against both Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus larvae but did not affect the Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides predator. PirAB expressed the strongest toxicity compared to PirA, PirB, or the mixture of PirA plus PirB. Whether the presence of an enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence in PirAB, but not in PirA, PirB, or the mixture of PirA plus PirB, has any impact on biological control efficacy needs further investigation.

Sea lice are a persistent problem for farmed and wild salmonid populations. Control can be achieved through the use of veterinary medicines. A model was developed to describe the patterns of sea lice infection on salmon farms in Scotland and to predict the likely effect of various treatment strategies. This model takes into account development rates and mortality using compartments representing life history stages and external infection pressure. The national sea lice infection pattern was described using parameters representing stage survival, background infection levels and egg viability rat

Tipping points govern species distributions, which could be impacted by ocean warming (OW) and sea surface freshening (SSF). Interactions between these stressors may affect tipping points. Also, the accumulation of stress over time (degree day) could condition the reaching of tipping points. Yet, these aspects have never been studied. Here, we hypothesize that SSF reduces the thermal tipping point of Calanus spp., key copepods that play a structuring role in marine food webs. Calanus spp. from the Oslofjord were exposed to a temperature gradient from 8 to 20 °C and a salinity range from 35 to

Skin barrier function is paramount for fish health and is likely affected by the predicted increases in seawater temperature. Salmonid skin produces a mucus layer mainly composed of mucins. Mucin glycans regulate interactions with pathogens, including binding to host cells, quorum sensing and regulation of virulence genes. In this work, the objective was to elucidate the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) skin mucosal responses to temperature in the presence of salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) to mimic salmon louse pressure at sea. A simultaneous louse and temperature challenge trial was perfo

The study of host-parasite relationships is an integral part of the immunology of aquatic species, where the complexity of both organisms has to be overlayed with the lifecycle stages of the parasite and immunological status of the host. A deep understanding of how the parasite survives in its host and how they display molecular mechanisms to face the immune system can be applied for novel parasite control strategies. This review highlights current knowledge about salmon and sea louse, two key aquatic animals for aquaculture research worldwide. With the aim to catch the complexity of the salmo

Hypersaline sediments derived from poor land management or the decommissioning of large-scale salt production contribute to the long-term degradation of aquatic environments. Obstacles impeding remediation of these environments include salt crusts restricting benthic recolonisation, hypersalinity-induced toxicity to organisms, and disruption of biogeochemical cycles. Remediation often focuses on engineered solutions, despite sediment-biota interactions often playing a crucial role in improving long-term remediation and restoration of contaminated areas. The presence of extensive bioturbating c

The salmon louse is an ectoparasitic copepod of salmonids in the marine environment, and represents a global challenge to salmon aquaculture. A major issue is the reliance of the industry on a limited number of chemicals to delouse salmonids on farms, and the high levels of resistance that lice have developed to all of these agents. However, for most of these chemicals, resistance and dispersal mechanisms are unknown. We recently demonstrated that the Phe362Tyr mutation is the primary cause of organophosphate resistance in lice collected on Norwegian farms. In the present study, we genotyped >

Morphological identification of the marine cyclopoid copepod Dioithona rigida in combination with sequencing a 645 bp fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (mtCOI) gene, collected from offshore waters of Kavarathi Island, Lakshadweep Sea, is presented in this study. Kiefer in 1935 classified Dioithona as a separate genus from Oithona. The main distinguishing characters observed in the collected samples, such as the presence of well-developed P5 with 2 setae, 5 segmented urosome, 12 segmented antennule, compact dagger-like setae on the inner margin of proximal segment of exop

Caligus fugu is a parasitic copepod specific to the tetraodontid genus Takifugu including the commercially important Takifugu rubripes. Despite the rapid accumulation of knowledge on other aspects of its biology, the host and settlement-site recognition mechanisms of this parasite are not yet well understood. Since the infective copepodid stage shows preferential site selection in attaching to the fins, we considered it likely that the copepodid recognizes chemical cues released or leaking from the fins, and/or transmembrane protein present on the fins. To isolate molecules potentially related

West Nile virus (WNV) is a neurotropic human pathogen that has caused increasing infected cases over recent years. There is currently no licensed vaccine or effective drug for prevention and treatment of WNV infection in humans. To facilitate antiviral drug discovery and neutralizing antibody detection, a WNV cDNA clone containing a luciferase reporter gene was constructed through incorporating Gaussia luciferase (Gluc) gene within the capsid-coding region of WNV genome. Transfection of BHK-21 cells with the cDNA clone-derived RNA generated luciferase reporter WNV (WNV-Gluc) and the stable WNV

Intestinal cestodes with complex life cycles have to pass through the acid stomach lumen of their vertebrate host(s) in order to reach their preferred site of development. The cestode's tegument is the only organ in constant contact with this hostile environment. Procercoids of Schistocephalus solidus (order Diphyllobothriidea) lose their outer layer on passing through the acidic stomach of their second intermediate host (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We wanted to investigate if the outer layer is an adaptation that enables passage through this hostile environment. We used fish bile to force the pr

In New Brunswick, Canada, the sea louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, poses an on-going management challenge to the health and productivity of commercially cultured Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. While the in-feed medication, emamectin benzoate (SLICE® ; Merck), has been highly effective for many years, evidence of increased tolerance has been observed in the field since late 2008. Although bioassays on motile stages are a common tool to monitor sea lice sensitivity to emamectin benzoate in field-collected sea lice, they require the collection of large numbers of sea lice due to inherent natural va

The resilience of coastal social-ecological systems may depend on adaptive responses to aquaculture disease outbreaks that can threaten wild and farm fish. A nine-year study of parasitic sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) and pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) from Pacific Canada indicates that adaptive changes in parasite management on salmon farms have yielded positive conservation outcomes. After four years of sea lice epizootics and wild salmon population decline, parasiticide application on salmon farms was adapted to the timing of wild salmon migrations. Winter treatment of farm fish w

Vibrio cholerae is a human pathogen and natural inhabitant of aquatic environments. Serogroups O1/O139 have been associated with epidemic cholera, while non-O1/non-O139 serogroups usually cause human disease other than classical cholera. V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 from the Neusiedler See, a large Central European lake, have caused ear and wound infections, including one case of fatal septicaemia. Recent investigations demonstrated rapid planktonic growth of V. cholerae non-O1/non-O139 and correlation with zooplankton biomass. The aim of this study was to elucidate the interaction of autochtho

A historical control clinical trial was performed to assess the effectiveness of teflubenzuron in controlling sea lice Lepeoptheirus salmonis burdens on farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar over time. The study site comprised 9 sea cages, all of which were treated. The teflubenzuron was administered in the feed, at a dosage of 10 mg kg(-1) biomass d(-1), over a treatment period of 7 d. At 1 wk post-treatment, sea lice chalimus and mobile stages were reduced by 92 and 74% (both p < 0.001), respectively. At 2 wk post-treatment, chalimus stages were reduced by 41% and mobile stages 61% (both p < 0.

The long-term effects of the sea lice treatment products Excis and Slice on zooplankton communities in a Scottish sea loch were investigated at a commercially operating salmon farm over 31 months. Cypermethrin and emamectin benzoate are the active ingredients in Excis and Slice respectively, which are widely used to control ectoparasitic sea lice on farmed salmon. Excis and Slice treatments did not cause basin-wide effects on the zooplankton community. For both formulations, no adverse affects on zooplankton were detected, instead observed changes in zooplankton abundance and community composi

Parasitic copepods of the family Caligidae, otherwise known as sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus), are responsible for serious disease problems in salmon aquaculture. This mini-review examines the host factors that are affecting the susceptibility of sea lice infection in salmon; in particular, host species, environment, host stress levels, and host immunocompetency. In order to develop more effective methods to control sea lice infection, these factors should be taken into account, along with other factors such as sea lice life cycle and fecundity as well as salmon husba

This study investigated the molecular, morphological, and pathological characteristics of the parasitic copepod Lamproglena monodi infesting Oreochromis niloticus in Egyptian aquaculture. A total of 273 tilapia were examined from three governorates, with infestation frequencies of 25% in Kafr El-Sheikh, 20% in Giza, and 21.7% in Al-Sharqia. Seasonal frequencies ranged from 13% in summer to 34.3% in autumn. Molecular amplification produced fragments of 1405 bp (18S rDNA) and 737 bp (28S rDNA), and BLAST analysis confirmed their identity as L. monodi with ≥98% similarity to reference sequences.

The sea louse, Caligus rogercresseyi, is one of the main concerns in the Chilean salmon industry. The free-living copepodid stage can recognize the host and initiate the parasitic phase, where environmental factors can shape the host recognition process. This study aimed to explore the ecological influence on the transcriptome of copepodids infesting Atlantic salmon experimentally exposed to different salinity and temperature (S/T) conditions. Herein, 200 salmon were infested with 35 copepodids per fish previously acclimatized to four S/T treatments: 32 and 26 PSU; 8 and 16°C. After 48 h of in
