Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) often occurs in the supratentorial white matter including corpus callosum. However, spinal leptomeningeal metastasis in cases of supratentorial GBM has been reported to be rare and there is usually a long interval between the cerebral lesion and the spinal seeding. We report here a case of GBM at the corpus callosum and other parts of the brain with simultaneous manifestation of spinal leptomeningeal seeding. The patient exhibited an abnormal motor behavior of the left hand as mirror movement when the right hand was performing a unimanual task (diagonistic dysprax…

A previously healthy 31-year-old Japanese man presented with a very rare germinoma of the corpus callosum without other intracranial lesions manifesting as transitory speech disturbance. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a heterogeneously enhanced mass in the corpus callosum extending into the cavity of the septum pellucidum. A tumor specimen obtained by stereotactic biopsy revealed a two-cell pattern germinoma containing human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)-beta-positive giant cells. The cerebrospinal fluid and serum levels of HCG and HCG-beta subunit were measurable. The diagnosis was g…

Restricted diffusion within the splenium of the corpus callosum was described in various conditions, but is not a prominent finding in magnetic resonance imaging after neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Perinatal characteristics were reviewed in 42 term neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy treated with selective head cooling. Neonatal images of 34 infants were reviewed. Ten of 34 (29%) infants demonstrated restricted diffusion changes within the splenium of the corpus callosum, with a significantly higher incidence of death or severe developmental delay, compared with infants w…

Inflammatory demyelination and axon damage in the corpus callosum are prominent features of multiple sclerosis (MS) and may partially account for impaired performance on complex tasks. The objective of this article was to characterize quantitative callosal MRI abnormalities and their association with disability. In 69 participants with MS and 29 healthy volunteers, lesional and extralesional callosal MRI indices were estimated via diffusion tensor tractography. expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and MS functional composite (MSFC) scores were recorded in 53 of the participants with MS. All…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a common brain malformation of variable clinical expression that is seen in many syndromes of various etiologies. Although ACC is predominantly genetic, few genes have as yet been identified. We have constructed and analyzed a comprehensive map of ACC loci across the human genome using data generated from 374 patients with ACC and structural chromosome rearrangements, most having heterozygous loss or gain of genomic sequence and a few carrying apparently balanced rearrangements hypothesized to disrupt key functional genes. This cohort includes more than…

To test the role of interhemispheric competition through the corpus callosum in the perceptual alternation of reversible figures, we compared children with callosal pathology and typically developing children on a bistable stimulus task. The children with corpus callosum pathology reported significantly less changes of percepts per minute than the age-matched typically developing children. In addition, older typically developing children reported significantly more changes of percepts than the younger ones. These results support the hypothesis that the rate of reversal between two interpretati…

A young man with primary hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid adenoma and aplasia of the corpus callosum is presented. We hypothesize a possible genetic association of the two pathologies: a proportion of the sporadic parathyroid adenomas are associated with genetic abnormalities of chromosome 11 and in some cases of corpus callosum aplasia, aneuploidy or polyploidy of this chromosome has been described.

OBJECTIVES: To explore and compare the prevalence and expression of specific health-related variables in a large survey sample of persons with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and their siblings.
METHODS: Caregiver surveys of individuals with ACC (n=189) and their siblings (n=189) provided data regarding diagnoses, physical features, neurological and sensory information, feeding, elimination and sleep concerns, and some behavioural features.
RESULTS: Compared with their siblings, individuals with ACC had more concurrent conditions and were more likely to have altered pain perception and…

The post-natal development of 6 patients with complete agenesis of the corpus callosum was assessed. The diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum had been suspected prenatally in 3 cases. In the remaining 3 cases diagnostic neuro-imaging was performed because of partial seizures (n = 2) and pendular nystagmus (n = 1). The neurological examination was normal in all patients with the exception of nystagmus in one. The neuro-developmental outcome was found to be normal in all 6 patients. In conclusion, these data suggest that good outcome is predominant in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

We report on a 16-month-old boy who presented with truncal ataxia and intermittent nystagmus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 19 months showed a T (2)-hyperintensity of the splenium and the genu of the corpus callosum with extension into the adjacent frontal white matter. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) revealed a corresponding area of restricted diffusion, suggesting cytotoxic oedema. The extent and localisation of the signal abnormalities mimic tissue injury as seen in Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD). Metabolic investigations were normal. Follow-up imaging at 24 months showed a similar …

To study the role of the corpus callosum (CC) in midline binocular integration, the effects of late callosotomy and congenital CC agenesis on the ability to perceive dichoptic plaid motion was assessed. Coherent motion was well perceived at all locations in the visual field under dioptic viewing but not along the vertical meridian (VM) when the components were dichoptically presented. This deficit was totally abolished in the agenesis subject and reduced in the callosotomized individual when stimulus size was increased beyond the VM. Electrophysiological correlates were also examined by record…

A 2.5-year-old male infant with agenesis of the corpus callosum and Leber's congenital amaurosis is described. The infant had nystagmus as the presenting sign. The fundi showed circumscribed macular atrophy with encircling retinal pigment epithelial hyperplasia (macular coloboma-like lesions), attenuation of the retinal arterioles, and very fine pigment dusting in the peripheral retina. Photopic and scotopic ERG were extinguished. Even though this is an exceedingly rare association, these findings along with neurological symptoms should alert the physician to conduct prompt cranial imaging.

The neuropathological study of corpus callosum agenesis requires a two-phase approach: first it should analyze the putative causal factors, i.e. absence of callosal neurons, commissuration inability or synapse remodelling defect; secondly it has to detect any morphogenetic effects stemming from the absence of commissure such as nonregression of archicortical structures, ventricular enlargement or possible invasion of the remaining telencephaplic commissure by callosal neurons. Absence of callosal neurons due to abnormal corticogenesis gives rise to corpus callosum agenesis without callosal axo…

An 8-year-old girl with Turner syndrome and 45,X/46,X,r(X) mosaicism was found to have agenesis of the corpus callosum and various other characteristics including 'kabuki makeup' facial features and mild learning disability. Only two other cases of Turner syndrome associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum have been reported, both in patients with a 45,X karyotype. In both of those patients the constellation of signs differed from those of the present patient in a number of ways. It remains to be confirmed whether there is a higher incidence of CNS malformation in girls who have Turner sy…
