When morality opposes the law: An fMRI investigation into punishment judgments for crimes with good intentions.

In judicial practice, morally right but legally wrong instances usually pose significant challenges for legal decision makers. To examine the cognitive and neural foundations of legal judgments in criminal cases involving apparent moral conflicts, we scanned 30 female participants during punishment judgments for crimes committed with good intentions. The behavioral results confirmed that moral acceptability was significantly correlated with the punishment ratings only in the good-intentioned crimes. The fMRI data mainly revealed that the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) plays special role

Unintentional effects of cleaning a crime scene-when the sponge becomes an accomplice in DNA transfer.

DNA transfer in aqueous solutions as well as the persistence of DNA on washed items has become a major subject of research in recent years and is often a significant problem in court. Despite these approaches, the question about the "mobility" of DNA especially in capital offenses cannot be answered in every case, since a variety of scenarios for DNA transfer are possible. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DNA traces could be distributed by cleaning an object. For this purpose, a large table surface and fabric piece were artificially provided with skin contact traces and body fl

Assessing Spatial Relationships Between Rates of Crime and Rates of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia in Chicago, 2012.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain serious public health problems particularly in urban environments in the USA. Despite accumulating research into the role of aggregate rates of crime in shaping rates of STIs, few studies account for spatial dependence in the structure of geographical data. Using multiple spatial analysis methodologies, the following study investigated spatial patterns in community area rates of violent, drug, and property crimes and rates of infection of gonorrhea and chlamydia in 77 community areas in Chicago. Moran's I analyses confirmed global spatial dependenc

Correlates of property crime in a cohort of recently released prisoners with a history of injecting drug use.

BACKGROUND: Injecting drug use (IDU) is a strong predictor of recidivism and re-incarceration in ex-prisoners. Although the links between drug use and crime are well documented, studies examining post-release criminal activity and re-incarceration risk among ex-prisoners with a history of IDU are limited. We aimed to explore factors associated with property crime among people with a history of IDU recently released from prison. METHOD: Individuals with a history of IDU released from prison within the past month were recruited via targeted and snowball sampling methods from street drug markets

The Severity, Frequency, and Variety of Crime in Heroin-Dependent Prisoners Enrolled in a Buprenorphine Clinical Trial.

Data were obtained on four dimensions of criminal activity (frequency, variety, severity, and income) from male and female prisoners (N = 200) with preincarceration heroin dependence who participated in a randomized clinical trial of buprenorphine treatment. The article examines the above-mentioned dimensions of crime and their relationships with demographic characteristics, substance use, legitimate employment, drug treatment episodes, and psychological problems. Results largely show several important similarities to results on previous prison inmate cohorts with histories of heroin addiction

Evaluation of the rapid analyte measurement platform (RAMP) for the detection of Bacillus anthracis at a crime scene.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the rapid analyte measurement platform (RAMP) for presumptive identification of Bacillus anthracis spores. Test samples consisted of serial dilutions of spore preparations of several Bacillus species, including B. anthracis, which were tested, using the RAMP Anthrax test cartridge, according to the manufacturer's instructions. The fluorescence labelled antibody-antigen complexes were detected in the portable reader after 15 min following sample addition. Dilutions of common environmental and household powders were also teste

The role of stalking in domestic violence crime reports generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department.

A review of 1,785 domestic violence crime reports generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department found that 1 in 6 (16.5 percent) contained evidence the suspect stalked the victim. Female victims were significantly more likely than male victims to allege stalking by their partners (18.3 vs. 10.5 percent). Most stalkers were former rather than current intimates. Regardless of victims' gender, reports with stalking allegations were significantly less likely to mention physical abuse or victim injury in the presenting condition, to involve households with children, or to involve victims and

Air pollution, weather, and violent crimes: concomitant time-series analysis of archival data.

Archival data covering a 2-year period were obtained from three sources in order to assess relations among ozone levels, nine measures of meteorological conditions, day of the week, holidays, seasonal trends, family disturbances, and assaults against persons. Confirming results obtained in laboratory studies, more family disturbances were recorded when ozone levels were high than when they were low. Two-stage regression analyses indicated that disturbances and assaults against persons were also positively correlated with daily temperatures and negatively correlated with wind speed and levels o

Adverse health outcomes in violent crime convicted persons: risk factors for somatic inpatient healthcare utilization.

BACKGROUND: Violent Crime Convicted Persons (VCCPs) are at increased risk of somatic health problems over the life course. However, the topic remains insufficiently studied, particularly regarding interactions with healthcare services in high-risk groups over extended periods. This prospective study aimed to explore adverse somatic outcomes in young adult VCCPs with a history of imprisonment and their interactions with healthcare services in Sweden. METHODS: In the Development of Aggressive Antisocial Behavior Study (DAABS) cohort, male VCCPs aged 18-25 (n = 266) imprisoned for violent and/or

Civilianized safety practitioners reduce crime and disorder: Evidence from a quasiexperimental evaluation in San Francisco.

Cities across the United States are experimenting with civilian-led alternatives to policing, yet rigorous evidence of their effectiveness remains scarce. This study evaluates a large-scale civilianized public safety program in San Francisco that deploys unarmed "safety practitioners" to high-crime intersections to provide consistent presence, de-escalation, and service referrals in place of traditional law enforcement. Using a generalized synthetic control design covering 624 intersections from 2018 to 2023, we estimate the causal impact of practitioner deployment on reported crime. We find t

The decision-making process of crime scene investigation: A trace-centric utility-based case study.

This case study explores the decision-making processes in crime scene investigations through a trace-centric, utility-based framework. Focusing on a single attempted murder case, the study examines the sequence of events, the involved actors and their actions, the collected and examined objects, the type of traces and their matrices and the traces utility during the investigation and in the judgement. The reasoning at the crime scene for the search, detection, collection and analysis of traces is rarely explicit, and scarcely studied. As initial step in the criminal justice process, it is howe

Ecological harm and criminal thresholds: A pilot legal-ecological coding framework for environmental crime judgments.

Environmental criminal law frequently relies on open-textured threshold concepts such as "substantial damage, " "serious harm, " and "serious risk" to distinguish administrative unlawfulness from criminally relevant conduct. Yet courts often apply these thresholds without a reproducible framework for structuring ecological seriousness across cases. This article introduces LEDAT ® (Legal-Ecological Damage Assessment Tool), a structured coding framework that combines legal and ecological variables into a Material Environmental Criminal Damage Index (IDPAm), while distinguishing material seriousn

Criminogenic Risk, Responsivity, and Protective Factors of Children Who Commit Crime: A Rapid Evidence Assessment.

This Rapid Evidence Assessment investigates the risk, protective, and responsivity factors for children who commit crime to inform the design and delivery of interventions. Eligible studies published between 2015 and 2025 were searched for and assessed using the EPPI Centre Weight of Evidence framework. Thirty studies of mainly medium to medium-high quality were included. The findings identify social, biological, and psychological factors, each assessed as risk, protective, or responsivity factors, and as being well-evidenced, moderately-evidenced, or indicative but insufficiently-evidenced. Immune dysregulation and inflammation causing hypopigmentation in post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis: partners in crime?

Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL), a heterogeneous dermal sequela of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), is challenging in terms of its etiopathogenesis. Hypopigmentation is a consistent clinical feature in PKDL, but mechanisms contributing to the loss of melanocytes remains poorly defined. Like other hypopigmentary dermatoses - for example, vitiligo, psoriasis, and leprosy - the destruction of melanocytes is likely a multifactorial phenomenon, key players being immune dysregulation and inflammation. This review focuses on immunological mechanisms responsible for the 'murder' of melanocytes,

Examining Sexual Crime Severity in China: A General-specific Model on Sex Offending Against Adults.

Sexual violence severity has long been viewed as a critical factor of sex offending. However, the criminological viewpoints on sexual violence severity have not received much attention, especially in the Chinese context. By integrating general-criminogenic (inhibitory mechanisms) and specific sex offending (learning mechanisms and contextual factors) perspectives, the current study links the propositions of social control (bonds) theory, self-control theory, differential association theory, and the integrated theory of sex offending, proposing a general-specific model for sexual violence sever

Anti-Asian Xenophobia, Hate Crime Victimization, and Fear of Victimization During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

While the World Health Organization advised against referring to COVID-19 using racial overtones, as the COVID-19 pandemic spread, many disparagingly called it the "Wuhan virus," the "Chinese virus," and other terms. In this context, the FBI warned police agencies about an expected increase in anti-Asian hate crimes during the early months of the pandemic. But, while some researchers and media outlets discussed these potential increases at length, very few studies have been able to directly assess the nature of anti-Asian hate and bias victimization during the pandemic. Following this, the cur

The relationship between psychological symptom ratings and crime in juvenile justice system involved young people.

RATIONALE: Prior research has not adequately examined the relationship between psychological state and offending. Limitations include over-reliance on criminal convictions as the dependent variable, failure to examine a comprehensive set of psychological states, the limited nature of measures and the frequent use of cross-sectional data that cannot ensure temporal ordering. AIMS: To explore the relationship between five self-reported psychological states-anxiety, depression, hostility, paranoia and psychoticism-and three types of offending-violent, non-violent and marijuana use-reported 6 mon
