Comparison of Neurological Manifestations in the Two Waves of COVID-19 Infection: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19) is an ongoing pandemic caused by highly contagious virus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2) that has infected millions of people across the world. Most of the countries have seen two wave patterns of the pandemic. The second wave is potentially more challenging due to high influx of cases, differing properties of the emerging mutants, and other dynamics of the evolving pandemic. Neurological manifestations are common among COVID-19 positive patients. In this context, the present study attempts to compare the neurological

Secondary cross infection with dengue virus serotype 2/3 aggravates vascular leakage in BALB/c mice.

Dengue virus (DV) has occasionally emerged at epidemic levels in Yunnan, China. Vaccine development is limited by antibody-dependent enhancement and a lack of good animal models. Thus, the study investigated cross infection based on maternal immunity in BALB/c mice and assessed the risk of cross infection by DV2-D13113 and DV3-YNWS2 epidemic virus strains. DV replicated within the organs of the BALB/c infant mice, even causing death. Particularly, DV3-infected infant mice were at higher risk of severe disease if their mothers were infected with DV2. Although BALB/c adults and pups survived DV2…

Reduced antibody cross-reactivity following infection with B.1.1.7 than with parental SARS-CoV-2 strains.

BACKGROUND: The degree of heterotypic immunity induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) strains is a major determinant of the spread of emerging variants and the success of vaccination campaigns, but remains incompletely understood. METHODS: We examined the immunogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.7 (Alpha) that arose in the United Kingdom and spread globally. We determined titres of spike glycoprotein-binding antibodies and authentic virus neutralising antibodies induced by B.1.1.7 infection to infer homotypic and heterotypic immunity. RESULTS: Antibodies el

Cross-priming amplification targeting the 18S rRNA gene for the rapid diagnosis of Babesia bovis infection.

Babesia bovis is a known causative agent of bovine babesiosis and is widely distributed across China. Rapid detection and accurate identification of B. bovis is essential for follow-up management and epidemiological investigations. In this study, a cross-priming amplification combined with vertical flow (CPA-VF) assay was developed. The detection limit of the CPA-VF assay targeting the 18S rRNA gene was 320 fg per reaction at 61 °C for 60 min. No cross-reactions were observed with other piroplasms infective to cattle. Furthermore, 36 blood samples from experimentally-infected animals were accu

Mt10-CVB3 Vaccine Virus Protects against CVB4 Infection by Inducing Cross-Reactive, Antigen-Specific Immune Responses.

Group B coxsackieviruses (CVB) containing six serotypes, B1-B6, affect various organs, and multiple serotypes can induce similar diseases such as myocarditis and pancreatitis. Yet, no vaccines are currently available to prevent these infections. Translationally, the derivation of vaccines that offer protection against multiple serotypes is highly desired. In that direction, we recently reported the generation of an attenuated strain of CVB3, termed Mt10, which completely protects against both myocarditis and pancreatitis induced by the homologous wild-type CVB3 strain. Here, we report that the

Children develop robust and sustained cross-reactive spike-specific immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

SARS-CoV-2 infection is generally mild or asymptomatic in children but a biological basis for this outcome is unclear. Here we compare antibody and cellular immunity in children (aged 3-11 years) and adults. Antibody responses against spike protein were high in children and seroconversion boosted responses against seasonal Beta-coronaviruses through cross-recognition of the S2 domain. Neutralization of viral variants was comparable between children and adults. Spike-specific T cell responses were more than twice as high in children and were also detected in many seronegative children, indicati
