Between 1971 and 1980, 385 patients with colposcopic biopsy-proved cervical intraepithelial neoplasia were treated by either the colposcopist or the referring physician by means of cryosurgery, electrocautery, or biopsy excision. All were observed for a minimum of 1 year, 220 between 1 and 2 years, 50 between 3 and 4 years, and 23 for 4 or more years. Therapy failed in 29 in the first year ("failures" proved by tissue examination). The failure rate among the 35 patients with carcinoma in situ was 20%, a rate significantly higher than that seen in 108 patients with severe dysplasia (7 or 6.5%)

Because survival of low birth-weight infants requiring intensive care has improved recently, particularly since the advent of exogenous surfactant therapy, we reviewed our experience at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children (KMCWC) from 1989 to 1991 to determine if the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a serious long-term complication, had also increased. BACKGROUND: Actinic keratoses are epidermal tumors that can develop into invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Recently, some Medicare carriers have limited reimbursement for destruction of actinic keratoses.

A retrospective study was undertaken to assess the effect of cryotherapy of the uterine cervix on the outcome of third trimester pregnancies. It was concluded that cryosurgery of the cervix had no effect on the onset or progress of labour, or on the infant, an important advantage compared with cold-knife conization as a therapy for young women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fibrous dysplasia of bone is difficult to manage because of its variable clinical course with many different methods of treatment reported. Therefore we report on our experience.
METHODS: We reviewed a series of 20 patients with 32 lesions included. The average age at the time of diagnosis was 32 years for monostotic disease, 26 years for polyostotic disease, and 3 years for McCune-Albright syndrome. The median follow-up period was 6 years. Two hundred and sixteen consecutive patients seen for the first time with symptomatic haemorrhoids entered trials of conservative and minor surgical treatment. They were divided into two groups according to their pretreatment maximal anal pressure. A case of ligneous conjunctivitis, which presented in the acute form and converted to a mixed form after several months is described. Treatment with fibrinolysin was of value in reducing the reformation time of the membranes and in decreasing the viscosity of the serofibrinous discharge. The use of cryosurgery appeared to be of value in eliminating the membranes and granuloma and in markedly reducing the production and viscosity of the discharge.

The author reports 55 patients suffering anal fissure treated by cryosurgery. The method is simple, causes almost no complication, and a real outpatient way of treatment. 47 patients were controlled (85.5 per cent of all). There was no recurrence or remaining complaint. Regarding his own experience the method is recommended.

Semi-conservative therapies in prostatic adenoma are discussed. They may be used in patients with non-operational prostatic adenoma. Besides permanent catheterization, there are the following possibilities: extension of the prostatic tube with a balloon, application of the urologic coil, commissurotomy, therapy with cryosurgery or hyperthermia. ++Palliative therapy markedly prolongs and improves the life of patients with systemic diseases, which make radical surgery impossible.

Cryosurgery is the first choice for surgical treatment of viral warts. It is applied in two ways: with blister induction in extraplantar common warts and without blister induction in genital, filiform, and mosaic warts. Plantar and periungual warts are enucleated with a spoon or scraped off with a curet after preparatory focal electrocoagulation with a ball probe. Genital warts may be treated with "extracutaneous" electrosection and electrocoagulation.
