Receptor cell responses to odorants: similarities and differences among odorants.

An extensive exploration of the discriminating properties of olfactory receptors cells has been conducted in our laboratory through the statistical processing of single cell responses recorded in the frog's olfactory epithelium. Similarities between odorant stimulating properties could be demonstrated by comparing the complex response profiles of receptor cells, resulting in the concept of odorant groups which depicts consistent relationships found between some odorous compounds. The recording technique limits the number of odorants which can be tested and compared within the same series of ex

Solvent- and Concentration-Induced Topological Transformation of a Ruthenium(II)-Based Trigonal Prism to a Triply Interlocked [2] Catenane.

Synthesis of interlocked supramolecular cages has been a growing field of interest due to their structural diversity. Herein, we report the template-free synthesis of a Ru(II) triply interlocked [2] catenane using coordination-driven self-assembly. The self-assembly of a triazine-based tripyridyl donor L (2,4,6-tris(5-(pyridin-4-yl)thiophen-3-yl)-1,3,5-triazine) with a dinuclear Ru(II) acceptor M (Ru2(dhnq)(η6-p-cymene)2)(CF3SO3)2) yielded two distinct structures depending on the solvent and concentration. In methanol, a triply interlocked metalla [2] catenane (MC2) was formed, whereas in nitr

Thyme essential oil inhibits intracellular replication of CyHV-3 and inactivates extracellular virus. An in vitro study.

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) can induce up to 100% mortality among carp populations. To date, there has been no safe method to prevent the consequences of the activity of CyHV-3. Thyme is widely used in cooking due to its flavour. Both thyme and thyme essential oil (TEO) are used in traditional herbal medicine, mainly to treat respiratory system disorders. In this study, TEO containing predominantly cymene and thymol was applied to explore its antiviral effect. The toxicity of TEO was examined in MTT and crystal violet assays. The anti-CyHV-3 activity of TEO in the intracellular and extrace

Effects of Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) Essential Oil on Aging-Induced Brain Inflammation and Blood Telomere Attrition in Chronologically Aged C57BL/6J Mice.

Chronological aging is commonly accompanied by chronic low-grade inflammation (or "inflammaging"), a contributor to the development of age-related chronic diseases. Aging increases oxidative stress that accelerates telomere shortening, leading to cell senescence and the generation of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) that exacerbates inflammation. Dietary antioxidants may help protect telomeres and attenuate inflammation. Thyme essential oil (TEO), reported for its potency against neuroinflammation, was fed to chronologically aged C57BL/6J mice for 24 weeks. The TEO diet showed
