Infected chronic wounds are polymicrobial in nature which include a diverse group of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Majority of these communal microorganisms are difficult to grow in vitro. Eighteen isolates of Alcaligenes xylosoxidans subsp. xylosoxidans were collected from clinical specimens of 15 patients in a burn unit and a plastic surgery ward over a 16-month period. The unusual proportion of serotype D strains of Cryptococcus neoformans infecting patients diagnosed with cryptococcosis in some parts of France prompted the analysis of DNA fingerprints obtained with 26 clinical and 29 environmental isolates from the same area. Our results suggest that pigeon droppings are a potential source of pathogenic strains of C. neoformans serotype D, as previously demonstrated for serotype A.

Thirty-two isolates of Coxiella burnetii collected from various hosts ranging from arthropods to man were compared by restriction endonuclease (RE) digestion patterns of chromosomal DNA using SDS-PAGE.
