Respiratory diseases are second only to gastroenteric diseases in importance in rabbits. Pasteurellosis is the primary respiratory disease affecting domestic rabbits, but other bacteria (e.g., Bordetella broniseptica and Staphylococcus spp) are significant opportunistic pathogens. The primary manifestations are upper respiratory disease (e.g., rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, and dacryocystitis). Various antimicrobials are effective for treatment.

The authors report a 13-month-old girl with chronic dacryocystitis, and history of three times probing and once inferior turbinate infracture. She underwent dacryocystorhinostomy due to failure of previous procedures. During surgery a free floating reddish mass was extracted from the lacrimal sac. Histopathologic examination revealed the mass to be a pyogenic granuloma.

A 7-year-old girl developed epiphora, recurrent purulent conjunctivitis, and dacryocystitis 32 months after the repair of a traumatic orbital floor fracture. Dacryocystography and surgical exploration revealed that migration of the orbital floor implant had caused obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct at the sac. Migration of the implant was probably due to a failure to anchor the implant properly to bone.

In the course of an acute phase of pneumococcal conjunctivitis, a serpiginous corneal ulcer has never been reported to develop. However, if there is a pneumococcal chronic dacryocystitis and a resultant lacrimal conjunctivitis, the association with pneumococcal serpiginous ulcers is significant. This is most likely due to the fact that those serological types that are particularly virulent for the cornea have an affinity to colonize and infect the lacrimal sac.

Endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (EE-DCR) is an effective treatment for dacryocystitis. Aneurysmal rupture is generally not considered a complication of EE-DCR under general anesthesia. Here, we present a patient with intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to the rupture of an undiagnosed intracranial aneurysm during EE-DCR. Clinicians should be aware of such fatal complications when using any vasoconstrictor intraoperatively.

Rabbits have become a popular house pet that is encountered with increasing frequency in small animal veterinary practice. The unique anatomy of the rabbit predisposes them to developing surface ocular problems including the development of dacryocystitis, as well as conjunctivitis and keratitis. This article endeavors to give an updated outline of the various conditions affecting the rabbit ocular surface, with emphasis on diagnosis and treatment.

We report the case of a 6-month-old boy with recurrent episodes of acute dacryocystitis from age 3 months to 1 year of age. The cause was determined to be congenital nasolacrimal sac diverticulum, a rare and commonly asymptomatic entity. An isolated diverticulectomy without dacryocystorhinostomy was performed because of lacrimal drainage system patency. At 6 months' follow-up the patient remained asymptomatic.

A newborn boy presented with severe, bilateral, necrotic blepharitis and dacryocystitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
