[Value of vertebroplasty combined with surgical decompression in the treatment of aggressive spinal angioma. Apropos of 3 cases].

Vertebral hemangiomas can cause difficult-to-treat neurological complications. We report our experience with three such cases. Patients no. 1 and 2 were females aged 64 and 71 years, respectively; patient no. 1 had a two-year history of weakness in the lower limbs and patient no. 2 had a five-month history of back pain. Both these patients had a pyramidal syndrome in the lower limbs. Patient no. 3 was a 61 year old male with a one-year history of left sciatica. Roentgenograms were suggestive of a hemangioma occupying the entire T8 (cases 1 and 2) or L5 (case 3) vertebra. Computed tomography an

Effects of Sarcopenia on Surgical Outcomes After Biportal Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression and Fusion: A Retrospective Observational Study.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, single-center study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of sarcopenia on perioperative parameters and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing biportal endoscopic lumbar surgery. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sarcopenia is associated with adverse surgical outcomes. However, its impact on minimally invasive procedures, particularly biportal endoscopic lumbar surgery, remains unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 153 patients who underwent biportal endoscopic lumbar surgery (decompression, n=101; fusion, n=52) between October 2021 and November

Recurrence of cervical intervertebral disc extrusion in 55 dogs after surgical decompression with or without prophylactic fenestration.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prophylactic fenestration (PF) of adjacent intervertebral discs decreases the recurrence rate (RR) of cervical intervertebral disc extrusion (C-IVDE) in small dogs undergoing ventral slot (VS) decompression, and whether PF increases perioperative complication risk. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, multi-institutional cohort study. SAMPLE POPULATION: A total of 55 dogs. METHODS: Medical records of a mixed population of small dogs (<20 kg) treated with VS for C-IVDE with a minimum one-year follow-up were reviewed. During surgery, dogs underwent either single-site P

Clinical and surgical results related to anterior-only multilevel cervical decompression and instrumented fusion for degenerative disease.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior-only multilevel cervical decompression and fusion surgery (AMCS) on 3-5-levels is challenging due to potential complications. Also, outcome predictors after AMCS are poorly understood. RESEARCH QUESTION: We hypothesize that in patients with at most mild/moderate cervical kyphosis (CK) of the cervical spine, restoration of cervical lordosis (CL) positively influences clinical outcomes. METHODS: Analysis of consecutive patients presenting with symptomatic degenerative cervical disease or non-union undergoing AMCS. We measured CL from C2 to C7, Cobb angle of fused levels

Medial orbital wall decompression: Demographics influencing surgical follow-up and complications: Impacts on follow-up and complications.

OBJECTIVE: Identify the impact of demographics and social determinants of health on surgical follow-up and complications after medial orbital wall decompression (MOWD) secondary to thyroid associated orbitopathy (TAO). METHODS: Demographics and social determinants of health (age, sex, race, insurance status) for 46 patients undergoing MOWD secondary to TAO were correlated with post-operative compliance and surgical complications by chi-square analyses. RESULTS: Among 46 patients, 23 were compliant with follow-up. There was no statistically significant difference between compliance and non-co

Surgical management for IgG4-related ophthalmic disease by a transcranial biopsy combined with extraorbital decompression: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4-related ophthalmic disease (IgG4-ROD) accounts for 22% of Japanese lymphoproliferative orbital disease and occurs in 4%-34% of patients with IgG4-related disease, according to the largest case series published to date. Because the optic nerve mass often appears as a tumor-like lesion, it is important, although difficult, to differentiate IgG4-ROD from other orbital tumors and diseases, and biopsy is essential for diagnosis. Here, the authors describe the surgical management of an IgG4-ROD case. OBSERVATIONS: A 63-year-old man presented to the authors' hospital wi

Sciatica Presentations and Predictors of Poor Outcomes Following Surgical Decompression of Herniated Lumbar Discs: A Review Article.

Pain associated with sciatica is one of the most common indications for surgery. The annual rate of discectomy has increased over recent years, with a significant number of patients reporting a poor outcome or symptom recurrence after surgery. This study aims to evaluate the predictors of poor outcome for patients undergoing lumbar discectomy for sciatica. A comprehensive search was conducted to find relevant literature published between 1985 and 2019. All literature with a clear methodology were included. Many factors that affect postoperative recovery after lumbar discectomy have been report

Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma: Correlation of Timing of Surgical Decompression and MRI Findings with Functional Neurological Outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a rare and morbid entity, with the prognosis affected by delayed diagnosis and surgical intervention. The correlation between the timing of the intervention and neurological recovery has not been clearly reported. We present a retrospective study of SSEH to determine the correlation between the timing of surgical intervention and changes in the spinal cord signal on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with the neurological outcome. METHODS: The records of 14 patients who had undergone surgical decompression of SSEHs during a 10-year durat

Percutaneous endoscopic ventral facetectomy: An innovative substitute of open decompression surgery for lateral recess stenosis surgical treatment?

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic surgery (PTES) constitutes an innovative method principally recruited for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Indication spectrum of PTES is constantly widened in current years. Hence, PTES has been proposed to represent a satisfactory alternative for the treatment of lateral recess stenosis (LRS), being defined as percutaneous endoscopic ventral facetectomy (PEVF) in these cases. The aim of this original study is to determine, for the first time in the literature, the outcomes of PEVF, especially in otherwise healthy nonelderly patients

Early surgical decompression within 8 hours for traumatic spinal cord injury: Is it beneficial? A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether early (<8 h) surgical decompression is better in improving neurologic outcomes than late (≥8 h) surgical decompression for traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI). METHODS: The various electronic databases were used to detect relevant articles published up until May 2016 that compared the outcomes of early versus late surgery for tSCI. Data searching, extraction, analysis, and quality assessment were performed according to Cochrane Collaboration guidelines. The results are presented as relative ratio (RR) for binary outcomes and mean diff

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy: does the scientific literature support efficacy claims made in the advertising media?

BackgroundTraction therapy has been utilized in the treatment of low back pain for decades. The most recent incarnation of traction therapy is non-surgical spinal decompression therapy which can cost over $100,000. This form of therapy has been heavily marketed to manual therapy professions and subsequently to the consumer. The purpose of this paper is to initiate a debate pertaining to the relationship between marketing claims and the scientific literature on non-surgical spinal decompression.DiscussionOnly one small randomized controlled trial and several lower level efficacy studies have be

Surgical decompression of branch retinal vein occlusion via arteriovenous crossing sheathotomy: a prospective review of 15 cases.

BACKGROUND: Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), the second most common vascular disorder of the retina, typically occurs at arteriovenous (A/V) crossings where the arteriole and venule share a common adventitial sheath. Mechanical narrowing of the venous lumen at these intersections is thought to play a pathoetiologic role in BRVO. METHODS: We performed surgical decompression of BRVO via A/V crossing sheathotomy in 15 patients with decreased visual acuity due to macular hemorrhage, edema, and ischemia. Reperfusion of the retina was achieved by surgically separating the overlying retinal art

Early UK Experience with Aspiration Thrombectomy Followed by Urgent Surgical Decompression for Acute Venous Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Venous thoracic outlet syndrome (vTOS) results from compression of the axillary or subclavian vein and may present with acute upper limb deep vein thrombosis. Catheter directed thrombolysis followed by decompression is widely performed but carries bleeding risk and may delay definitive surgery. Mechanical thrombectomy offers a lysis free alternative. This study aimed to assess early outcomes of mechanical thrombectomy followed by urgent surgical decompression in vTOS patients. METHOD: This paper reports a retrospective single centre case series of patients with vTOS treated with
