The anatomy of vocal divergence in North American Elk and European red deer.

Loud and frequent vocalizations play an important role in courtship behavior in Cervus species. European red deer (Cervus elaphus) produce low-pitched calls, whereas North American elk (Cervus canadensis) produce high-pitched calls, which is remarkable for one of the biggest land mammals. Both species engage their vocal organs in elaborate maneuvers but the precise mechanism is unknown. Vocal organs were compared by macroscopic and microscopic dissection. The larynx is sexually dimorphic in red deer but not in elk. The laryngeal lumen is more constricted in elk, and narrows further during onto…

Antibody prevalence and molecular identification of Babesia spp. In roe deer in France.

In a region-wide serologic study carried out in 2004 on free-ranging hunted roe deer in various landscapes, we found that 58% of the animals (237 out of 406) were antibody positive for Babesia divergens antigen. Serologic and infection status was also analyzed for 327 roe deer live-trapped in two fenced forest areas over 5 yr (2004-08). For two consecutive years during this period, 92 and 94% of the deer in these closed populations were antibody-positive for B. divergens. Babesia spp. were isolated in autologous red blood cell culture for 131 of the trapped animals (40%). Molecular typing was …

[Acute pasteurellosis in fallow deer, cattle and pigs in a region of Eastern Germany].

Hemorrhagic septicaemia, an acute disease caused by P multocida capsular type B which is rarely detected in Europe, caused considerable losses in fallow deer, cattle and pigs within a region along the border of the federal states Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt in the summer of 2010. Clinical appearances and diagnostic findings are presented and possible triggering influences discussed. Pasteurella multocida capsular type B has not been cultivated from clinically healthy cattle and pigs of the region. Examination of fallow deer and roe deer in the region revealed the presence of singular carrier…

White-tailed deer are susceptible to the agent of sheep scrapie by intracerebral inoculation.

Interspecies transmission studies afford the opportunity to better understand the potential host range and origins of prion diseases. The purpose of this experiment was to determine susceptibility of white-tailed deer to the agent of scrapie after intracerebral inoculation and to compare clinical signs and lesions to those reported for chronic wasting disease (CWD). Deer (n = 5) were inoculated with 1 mL of a 10% (wt/vol) brain homogenate derived from a sheep clinically affected with scrapie. A non-inoculated deer was maintained as a negative control. Deer were observed daily for clinical sign…

Serosurvey of roe deer, chamois and domestic sheep in the central Italian Alps.

Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), chamois (Rupicapra rupricapra rupicapra), and domestic sheep in the Orobie Alps, Italy, were serologically tested for antibodies to selected pathogens that may be transmitted across species. Antibodies against Brucella spp. and bovine herpesvirus 1 (roe deer and chamois only) were not detected in any species. In roe deer, antibodies were detected against Toxoplasma gondii (13%) and Neospora caninum (3%). Chamois tested positive for antibodies to T. gondii (5%), N. caninum (21%), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) (41%), bovine parainfluenza type-3 virus (…

Climate, deer, rodents, and acorns as determinants of variation in lyme-disease risk.

Risk of human exposure to vector-borne zoonotic pathogens is a function of the abundance and infection prevalence of vectors. We assessed the determinants of Lyme-disease risk (density and Borrelia burgdorferi-infection prevalence of nymphal Ixodes scapularis ticks) over 13 y on several field plots within eastern deciduous forests in the epicenter of US Lyme disease (Dutchess County, New York). We used a model comparison approach to simultaneously test the importance of ambient growing-season temperature, precipitation, two indices of deer (Odocoileus virginianus) abundance, and densities of w…

Deer antlers: a zoological curiosity or the key to understanding organ regeneration in mammals?

Many organisms are able to regenerate lost or damaged body parts that are structural and functional replicates of the original. Eventually these become fully integrated into pre-existing tissues. However, with the exception of deer, mammals have lost this ability. Each spring deer shed antlers that were used for fighting and display during the previous mating season. Their loss is triggered by a fall in circulating testosterone levels, a hormonal change that is linked to an increase in day length. A complex 'blastema-like' structure or 'antler-bud' then forms; however, unlike the regenerative …

Evaluation of ivermectin for treatment of hair loss syndrome in black-tailed deer.

Since 1997, numerous Columbian black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) in western Washington (USA) have developed a hair loss syndrome that often preceded emaciation, debilitation, pneumonia, and death. To study this syndrome, eight affected free-ranging Columbian black-tailed deer fawns were captured from western Washington in February 1999 to determine the effect of ivermectin treatment. Fecal examinations indicated that the internal parasites were Dictyocaulus viviparus, Parelaphostrongylus sp., Trichuris sp., Moniezia sp., Eimeria spp., and gastrointestinal strongyles. Biting l…

Trace element metabolism, dietary requirements, diagnosis and prevention of deficiencies in deer.

The first deer farms were established in New Zealand about 30 years ago. Extensive studies on trace elements in sheep and cattle have resulted in clarification of the requirements of those species and the development of protocols to diagnose and prevent deficiencies. In contrast, there have been very few studies conducted with deer. This review summarises information available on trace element nutrition of deer and concludes that, in New Zealand, cobalt (Co), vitamin B12, selenium (Se) and iodine (I) deficiencies are of lesser importance than copper (Cu), which can have a significant impact on…

Enzootic transmission of deer tick virus in New England and Wisconsin sites.

To determine whether rodents that are intensely exposed to the deer tick-transmitted agents of Lyme disease, human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, and human babesiosis are also exposed to deer tick virus (DTV), we assayed serum samples from white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) in sites densely infested by deer ticks. To conduct serosurveys, we developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot assay by cloning, expressing, and purifying a portion of the DTV envelope glycoprotein (DTV rE) for use as test antigen. Sera from mice and v…

Growth, voluntary food intake and digestion in farmed temperate and tropical deer.

Growth and voluntary feed intake (VFI) in grazing temperate farmed deer species are influenced by the feeding value of the forage and the stage of the deer's seasonal cycle. Liveweight gain (LWG) of growing red deer was greater when perennial ryegrass (0.80)/white clover (0.20) pasture was grazed at 10 cm than 5 cm surface height, but venison production by one year of age was still low. Chicory and red clover were of superior feeding value for deer than perennial ryegrass-based pastures, increasing LWG of young red and hybrid (0.25 elk; 0.75 red deer) deer during summer and autumn, due to high…

[Enzootic spinal ataxia in fallow and wild red deer in Upper Bavaria].

Since 1993 several cases of spinal ataxia occurred in adult red and/or fallow deer in four farms in Southern Bavaria. The disease based on a secondary copper deficiency due to a high level of molybden and a low level of copper content in the feed. Some of the animals suffer from a severe disturbance of motion. In most cases the animals are shot at the beginning of illness. Histologically the most important lesions are in the spinal cord consisting mainly in a bilateral symmetric degeneration of dorsolateral and ventral areas of the white matter. Degeneration is caused by lamellar disintegratio…

Perpetuation of the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis in a deer tick-rodent cycle.

A human-derived strain of the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, a recently described emerging rickettsial disease, has been established by serial blood passage in mouse hosts. Larval deer ticks acquired infection by feeding upon such mice and efficiently transmitted the ehrlichiae after molting to nymphs, thereby demonstrating vector competence. The agent was detected by demonstrating Feulgen-positive inclusions in the salivary glands of the experimentally infected ticks and from field-derived adult deer ticks. White-footed mice from a field site infected laboratory-reared ticks with t…

Elaeophorosis in red deer caused by Elaeophora elaphi: lesions of natural disease.

This is the first study of the lesions produced by Elaeophora elaphi, a filarial worm first reported in 1986. Only the morphologic characteristics of this species have been described previously. Samples for the study were taken from 74 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 1-10 years old, slaughtered in central Spain. Grossly, filariae were observed in the transverse, left, or right branches of the portal vein of 18 animals. In addition to filariae, whitish thrombi were found in the right and left branches of the portal vein in nine animals. Thrombi of similar characteristics were also observed in 12 dee…

Metabolism of calcium and phosphorus during pregnancy and lactation in white-tailed deer.

The effects of pregnancy and early lactation on blood parameters were studied in 4 white-tailed does in 1981-82 and 8 in 1982-83. No year or … than in the other trimesters. The results indicate a physiological hyperparathyroidism in pregnant deer. Plasma concentrations of CT were higher (P less than 0.05) during lactation and post-weaning than during pregnancy. Increased AP and PTH during late pregnancy may be responsible for Ca absorption and mobilization, whereas elevated plasma concentrat …

A soluble immunosuppressor substance in spleen in deer mice infected with Trypanosoma brucei.

A soluble substance that blocks B-cell response was extracted from spleen of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) chronically infected with Trypanosoma brucei. Immunosuppressor activity of this substance was demonstrated by plaque-forming cell assays of spleen cells from Swiss/Webster mice inoculated with sheep red blood cells and simultaneously given the suppressor substance, and of spleen cell cultures treated with sheep red blood cells and suppressor substance. Studies by light and electron microscopy of spleen of immunosuppressed Swiss/Webster mice showed that the suppressor substance blocks…

Naturally occurring neurologic disease in a fallow deer infected with meningeal worms.

Neurologic disease resulting from infection with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis was diagnosed in a fallow deer (Dama dama) from Georgia, with clinical signs and histopathologic lesions similar to those reported for other accidental hosts of P. tenuis. Early fifth stage parasites were found in the spinal meninges and immature parasites were found in the neural parenchyma, but none were recovered from the brain and cranial meninges.

Prevalence of renal urolithiasis in a large, captive white-tailed deer herd.

Prevalence of renal urolithiasis in a large, captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herd was examined over a two-year period of time. In 1973, 1.3% of 225 deer examined had calculi in the renal pelvis and 4.4% had kidney lesions, either independent or in combination with the calculi. In 1974, prevalence increased and 5.9% of 354 deer had calculi and 6.5% had kidney lesions. Calculi and lesions affected all sex and age-classes. Involvement was both unilateral and bilateral with 23.8% having stones in both kidneys and 30.4% having lesions in both kidneys. Lesions and calculi occurred…
