Symptoms of swallowing anxiety in panic disorder patients and associated psychopathologic factors.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate symptoms of swallowing difficulty in Panic Disorder (PD) patients and the factors associated with these symptoms. METHODS: In the pre-phase of the study, 22 PD patients who were treated in psychiatry outpatient clinics and who were found to have swallowing difficulty were evaluated. PD patients were asked to write about their thoughts, feelings and behaviors associated with swallowing difficulty. Later, these texts were examined and 41 expressions were identified in which patients described their swallowing difficulty. These expressions were evalu

Swallowing Disorders in Schizophrenia.

Disorders of swallowing are poorly characterized but quite common in schizophrenia. They are a source of considerable morbidity and mortality in this population, generally as a result of either acute asphyxia from airway obstruction or more insidious aspiration and pneumonia. The death rate from acute asphyxia may be as high as one hundred times that of the general population. Most swallowing disorders in schizophrenia seem to fall into one of two categories, changes in eating and swallowing due to the illness itself and changes related to psychotropic medications. Behavioral changes related t

Self-Perception of Voice and Swallowing Handicap in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Hypokinetic dysarthria and dysphagia are known features of Parkinson's disease; however, self-perception of their handicapping effects on emotional, physical, and functional aspects of quality of life over disease duration is less understood. OBJECTIVE: 1) Based upon patient self-perception, to determine the relationship of the handicapping effects of dysphagia and dysphonia with time since diagnosis in individuals with Parkinson's disease; 2)To determine if there is a relationship between voice and swallowing handicap throughout the course of Parkinson's disease. METHOD: 277 sub

[Lipotransfer after free-flap tongue reconstruction can improve dysphagia and articulation disorders: a case report].

Atrophy of tongue after free-flap reconstruction often leads to functional problems like dysphagia and articulation disorders. Lipotransfer might resolve this issue. We describe a case of repeated lipotransfer into an atrophied reconstructed tongue.A 66-year-old patient with a squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue underwent hemiglossectomy and reconstruction of the tongue by a free radial forearm flap. After atrophy of the reconstructed tissue, repeated sessions of lipotransfer were undertaken to augment the atrophic tissue. Three sessions of lipotransfer resulted in satisfactory augmentation

Rehabilitation approaches to dysphagia that was developed for a patient who attempted to commit suicide by hanging: a case report.

We report our experience with a case of attempted suicidal hanging presenting with dysphagia, in which rehabilitation approaches resulted in improvement. A 36-year-old man was discovered collapsed at home. From the finding of a broken cord nearby, attempted suicide by hanging was suspected. He was transported to hospital after 40 minutes, and regained consciousness after emergency treatment. There were no noteworthy findings on brain magnetic resonance imaging, cervical spine computed tomography, or vocal cord examination. There were no noteworthy psychiatric disorders or cognitive abnormaliti

[Research progress on the role of geniohyoid muscle ultrasound in the assessment of swallowing function in critically ill elderly patients].

Swallowing dysfunction severely affects the quality of life in elderly individuals. In China, the prevalence of dysphagia among people aged 80 years or older is 41%, with even higher rates seen in critically ill elderly patients. Currently, available methods for assessing swallowing function are complex to perform and inconvenient for bedside evaluation. However, this functional disorder, which is common and has a significant impact on prognosis in critically ill elderly patients, has not received widespread attention from intensivists. With the increasing use of ultrasound in critical care, i

A systematic review of water-soluble contrast use in videofluoroscopic examination of dysphagia.

INTRODUCTION: The Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) is a key diagnostic tool for evaluating swallowing function, providing dynamic visualization of bolus transit and swallowing mechanism. Traditionally, barium is used as the contrast medium due to its effectiveness in highlighting anatomical and functional aspects of swallowing. However, water-soluble contrast (WSC) agents, which differ in osmolarity, viscosity, and iodine atom-particle ratio, have emerged as alternatives and their optimal use in VFSS remains unclear. This systematic review investigates the utilization of WSC agents in VF

What School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists Need to Know About Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding Development and Disorders.

PURPOSE: School-based speech-language pathologists are at the frontline for treating children with pediatric feeding disorders (PFDs). Often, speech-language pathologists are the primary allied health professionals who are charged with maximizing safety, supporting nutrition and neurodevelopmental growth. Due to the increasing need for assessment and treatment of PFDs in schools, it is fundamental that PFDs and dysphagia are detected, differentially diagnosed, and addressed to support developing children. This tutorial addresses the anatomy, physiology, and development of functional feeding an

Dysphagia in patients with severe COVID-19: a retrospective study.

To investigate dysphagia after extubation in patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We retrospectively examined patients with severe COVID-19 treated in our hospital between August 2021 and March 2022. Feeding outcomes were categorized into two groups-(1) total oral intake, and (2) difficulty in oral intake. To assess the feeding outcome, we used modified water-swallowing test (MWST) for all patients. However, in cases where aspiration or recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy was suspected, we conducted the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing after MWST. Patient data we

The neurorehabilitation of post-stroke dysphagia: Physiology and pathophysiology.

Swallowing is a complex process involving the precise contractions of numerous muscles of the head and neck, which act to process and shepherd ingested material from the oral cavity to its eventual destination, the stomach. Over the past five decades, information from animal and human studies has laid bare the complex network of neurones in the brainstem, cortex and cerebellum that are responsible for orchestrating each normal swallow. Amidst this complexity, problems can and often do occur that result in dysphagia, defined as impaired or disordered swallowing. Dysphagia is common, arising fro

Characterizing the Validity of Using VASES to Derive DIGEST-FEES Grades.

INTRODUCTION: Visual Analysis of Swallowing Efficiency and Safety (VASES) and Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity for Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (DIGEST-FEES) are two complimentary methods for assessing swallowing during FEES. Whereas VASES is intended to facilitate trial-level ratings of pharyngeal residue, penetration, and aspiration, DIGEST-FEES is intended to facilitate protocol-level impairment grades of swallowing safety and efficiency. The aim of this study was to assess the validity of using VASES to derive DIGEST-FEES impairment grades. METHODS: DIGEST-FEES

Modification of the texture of 3D printing soy protein isolate-based foods with proper nozzle sizes: A swallowing oriented strategy for dysphagia diet.

3D printing could provide swallowing-friendly food with high nutrition for a dysphagia diet. The effects of printing nozzle size on texture modification were studied using the soy protein isolate (SPI)-beeswax (BWX)-based bigel ink system enriched with bio-actives. Smaller nozzle sizes (0.4 to 0.8 mm) decrease while bigger ones (1.6 to 2.0 mm) increase the texture profiles. Fortunately, the 1.0 mm nozzle size helps to regulate the rheology of mechanical strength and soften the texture of hardness, as well as maintain a higher proportion of semi-solid water. Consequently, the 1.0 mm nozzle achi

An update on pharyngeal assessment by the modified barium swallow.

The modified barium swallow study (MBSS) is a diagnostic examination that visualizes the functional anatomy and physiology of the oral pharyngeal swallowing mechanism in real time. The MBSS, a videofluoroscopic imaging method, is indicated for patients with known or suspected oropharyngeal dysphagia and ideally involves the combined expertise of a radiologist and speech pathologist. The MBSS provides critical diagnostic insights that help in identifying and assessing the type and severity of physiological swallowing impairments, evaluating the safety of oral intake, testing the effectiveness o
