Serotonergic cortico-limbic and executive network dysfunction in Parkinson's disease impulse control disorders: a PET-fMRI study.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) affect up to 45% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, yet their neural mechanisms remain unclear. Using multimodal PET and resting-state fMRI in 23 PD patients (11 PDICD + , 12 PD-ICD-) and 14 healthy controls, we identified specific brain pathways underlying ICDs. PDICD+ patients showed steeper delay discounting and altered functional connectivity, including enhanced posterior parietal coupling within executive networks and disrupted salience-executive interactions. Critically, aberrant right supplementary motor area-amygdala connectivity was linked to ICD se…

The Perception of Time Is Underestimated in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa.

Research has revealed reduced temporal discounting (i.e., increased capacity to delay reward) and altered interoceptive awareness in anorexia nervosa (AN). In line with the research linking temporal underestimation with a reduced tendency to devalue a reward and reduced interoceptive awareness, we tested the hypothesis that time duration might be underestimated in AN. Our findings revealed that patients with AN displayed lower timing accuracy in the form of timing underestimation compared with controls. These results were not predicted by clinical, demographic factors, attention, and working m

Early life adversity and health-risk behaviors: proposed psychological and neural mechanisms.

Early life adversity (ELA) is associated with poorer health in adulthood, an association explained, at least in part, by increased engagemen … eightened emotional reactivity, blunted reward responsivity, poorer emotion regulation, and greater delay discounting. We then demonstrate that these adaptations to ELA are associated with an increased risk of smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and eating high-fat, high-sugar foods. Furthermore, we explore how HRBs affect the brain in ways that reinforce addicti …

Economic weights of maternal and direct traits of pigs calculated by applying gene flow methods.

Multiple trait selection indexes in pig breeding programmes should take into account the population structure and time delay between parent selection and expressions of traits in all production levels next to the trait impacts on economic efficiency of production systems. Gene flow procedures could be used for the correct evaluation of maternal and direct traits of pig breeds involved in breeding or crossbreeding systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to expand a previously developed bioeconomic model and computer program to calculate the marginal economic values by including a gene flo

The preference for future outcomes correlates with the temporal variability of functional connectivity among brain regions.

People inevitably make decisions between short-term and long-term consequences across domains like education, health and economics. In this kind of decision, the tendency to discount the value of later-larger rewards with increasing delays is defined as delay discounting (DD). A recent review has suggested that three neural systems which respectively responsible for valuation, prospection and cognitive control (e.g., ventromedial prefrontal cortex [vmPFC], hippocampus, precuneus and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex [dlPFC]) could interact with each other flexibly to have impacts on DD. However, …

Impulsive choice in two different rat models of ADHD-Spontaneously hypertensive and Lphn3 knockout rats.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a symptom of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and variants in the Lphn3 (Adgrl3) gene (OMIM 616417) have been linked to ADHD. This project utilized a delay-discounting (DD) task to examine the impact of Lphn3 deletion in rats on impulsive choice. "Positive control" measures were also collected in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), another animal model of ADHD. METHODS: For Experiment I, rats were given the option to press one lever for a delayed reward of 3 food pellets or the other lever for an immediate reward of 1 pellet. Impulsive choice wa

Choice and motor impulsivity in Veterans with mild traumatic brain injury with and without history of suicide attempt.

Traumatic brain injury is associated with increased risk for suicide, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. One candidate mechanism is impulsivity, which includes both choice impulsivity (e.g., preference for smaller, immediate rewards) and motor impulsivity (inability to inhibit prepotent motor responding). We evaluated these facets of impulsivity in Veterans classified according to their history of mild TBI (mTBI) and/or prior suicide attempt. 99 Veterans were classified as having no mTBI or suicide attempt (control, n = 35), mTBI but no suicide attempt (mTBI, n = 42), or m

GABAB receptors in prelimbic cortex and basolateral amygdala differentially influence intertemporal decision making and decline with age.

The ability to decide adaptively between immediate vs. delayed gratification (intertemporal choice) is critical for well-being and is associated with a range of factors that influence quality of life. In contrast to young adults, many older adults show enhanced preference for delayed gratification; however, the neural mechanisms underlying this age difference in intertemporal choice are largely un-studied. Changes in signaling through GABAB receptors (GABABRs) mediate several age-associated differences in cognitive processes linked to intertemporal choice. The current study used a rat model to

Future preferences and prospection of future of outcomes: Independent yet specific associations with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct problems have been associated with heightened temporal discounting of reward value resulting in a preference for immediate over delayed outcomes. We examined the cross-sectional relationship between future preference (including intertemporal choice) and prospection (the ability to bring to mind and imagine the experience of future personally-relevant events and outcomes) in adolescents with a range of ADHD symptoms and aggressive behaviour. METHODS: A combination of behavioural tasks and self-reports measure

Temporal Discounting Impulsivity and Its Association with Conduct Disorder and Irritability.

Objectives: Temporal reward discounting impulsivity (TDI) reflects a propensity to choose smaller immediate rather than larger delayed rewards relative to age/IQ-matched peers. Previous work with adults has linked TDI to an increased risk for antisocial behavior but also psychopathology in general. However, little work has examined TDI in adolescents with conduct disorder (CD), or considered whether TDI might be associated dimensionally with traits associated with antisocial behavior, that is, impulsivity, irritability, and/or callous-unemotional traits. In this study TDI was investigated in a

Neuromodulation of risk and reward processing during decision making in individuals with general anxiety disorder (GAD).

Individuals with general anxiety disorder (GAD) have an impaired future-oriented processing and altered reward perception, which might involve the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Twenty-nine adults with GAD performed the balloon analogue risk-taking task (BART) and delay discounting task (DDT) during five sessions of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with different stimulation conditions. The stimulation conditions were: anodal dlPFC (F3)/cathodal vmPFC (Fp2), anodal vmPFC (Fp2)/cathodal dlPFC (F3), anodal dlPFC (F3)/cathodal righ…

Neural dysfunction during temporal discounting in paediatric Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Both Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are associated with choice impulsivity, i.e. the tendency to prefer smaller immediate rewards over larger delayed rewards. However, the extent to which this impulsivity is mediated by shared or distinct underlying neural mechanisms is unclear. Twenty-six boys with ADHD, 20 boys with OCD and 20 matched controls (aged 12-18) completed an fMRI version of an individually adjusted temporal discounting (TD) task which requires choosing between a variable amount of money now or £100 in one week, one month or

Single units in the pigeon brain integrate reward amount and time-to-reward in an impulsive choice task.

BACKGROUND: Animals prefer small over large rewards when the delays preceding large rewards exceed an individual tolerance limit. Such impulsive choice behavior occurs even in situations in which alternative strategies would yield more optimal outcomes. Behavioral research has shown that an animal's choice is guided by the alternative rewards' subjective values, which are a function of reward amount and time-to-reward. Despite increasing knowledge about the pharmacology and anatomy underlying impulsivity, it is still unknown how the brain combines reward amount and time-to-reward information t

Executive functioning, temporal discounting, and sense of time in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).

Clinic-referred teens (ages 12-19) with ADHD and ODD (N = 101) were compared to community control (CC) teens, equated for age and sex, (N = 39) on a variety of psychological tasks assessing executive functioning (EF), temporal reward discounting, and time estimation and reproduction. A factor analysis reduced the EF measures to three dimensions, representing CPF Inattention, Working Memory, and CPT Inhibition. Results indicated that the ADHD group had significantly more CPT Inattention than the CC group. No differences were found for Working Memory or CPT Inhibition. The ADHD group displayed s

Immediate pleasures and future consequences. A neuropsychological study of binge eating and obesity.

Longitudinal data indicate that our capacity for adaptive self-regulation is a relatively stable predisposition that appears in childhood and predicts future life successes. In 2004, we published the first study demonstrating decision-making deficits in overweight/obese adult women. The present study is an extension of these findings. We assessed obese women with (n=65) and without (n=73) binge-eating disorder (BED), and a group (n=71) of normal-weight women, on two neuropsychological tests: the Iowa Gambling Task and a Delay Discounting measure. The BED and obese groups had worse performance …

Always gamble on an empty stomach: hunger is associated with advantageous decision making.

Three experimental studies examined the counterintuitive hypothesis that hunger improves strategic decision making, arguing that people in a hot state are better able to make favorable decisions involving uncertain outcomes. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated that participants with more hunger or greater appetite made more advantageous choices in the Iowa Gambling Task compared to sated participants or participants with a smaller appetite. Study 3 revealed that hungry participants were better able to appreciate future big rewards in a delay discounting task; and that, in spite of their perception of…
